Let's talk about STDs
There's been a lot of political tension on this forum lately. Let's talk about something else instead.
What's your opinion on the different STDs?

RIP Cassini ..the little space craft that flew to Saturn
What a wonderful triumph of Science and Engineering.

We find out that sand on Titan is way different to sand on earth. It's "sticky" sand. Titan might be the best place to build "sand castles"

Yet providing more accurate information than can be obtained from either the Bible or Koran... You sort of asked for that.

Indeed, it seems that science has done a pretty good job of demonstrating that god had zero to do with it
Deeply_Dippy (458 D)

And so the trolling starts.

Major - it all depends on what information you're looking for.

Ogion - zero to do with what? You aren't actually making any sense.

Dearest Deeply Dippy. In my opinion, you started any "trolling" that's occurred in this thread, with a completely unnecessary reference to God & creation. If you care to read the thread heading, this thread is about space exploration, science and engineering. If you wish to discuss God and creation, then please start a separate thread for that purpose.

One of the many amazing things that Cassini has possibly found is the age of Saturn's ring could only be about 100 millions years old. Which mean in geological times we are very lucky to see them.

Major, you have a funny interpretation of trolling.

I absolutely agree, Major, that Cassini was a marvellous project and feat of science.

Nothing in my post denied Cassini's success, so why did you choose to denigrate TWO of the world's major religions?
Ogion (3817 D)
19 Sep 17 UTC
Only two? That's a disappointment (and certainly an undercount)

To answer your question, you imaginary critter had zero to do with any of the objects that Cassini explored
MajorMitchell (1600 D)

Those "ice rings" are amazing.. Not very thick at all, very thin, very flat, yet on the outer edge of one set of rings there are shadows thrown by "vertical" peaks several kilometres high..compared to the ring thickness of about thirty metres ( if I remember correctly )
MajorMitchell (1600 D)

@DD.. You bought God into it, describing the universe / cosmos as "God's creation". You could have chosen to post.. " which shows us how little we know about the universe / cosmos" and avoided a superfluous mention of God. To suggest as I did that neither the Koran or Bible are credible sources of Scientific information about Saturn and it's moons and rings is not, I would suggest, a denigration of Christianity or Islam. But this part of our discussion would be better suited to a separate thread, and should you initiate such a thread I may choose to participate further there.
Dearest Ogion. I think you generously over estimated my potency. I'm reasonably confident that the world's major religions will continue unnafected by any comments that I might make.
Just quietly, imho Science should always be prepared to consider the possibility of the existence of Gods and deities, and should verifiable evidence that meets the rigours of Scientific standards ever be presented, then that could be tested and some most interesting papers published. We might even send an exploratory vehicle off to heaven to take pictures of the pearly gates.

Thanks for that clarification, Major. You are right, I had omitted Judaism.

If you want only cosmological references, can I suggest Psalm 19:

"The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the works of his hands."

As I said, Cassini was a scientific and technological marvel, showing us amazing things about God's creation.

Its nice to hear that, like me, you do not consider that faith and science have to be mutually exclusive.

There is much of value in life that cannot be empirically measured.
MajorMitchell (1600 D)
20 Sep 17 UTC
Dearest Deeply Dippy. Psalm 19 can say what it does, but that doesn't necessarily mean it is correct. You believing it to be true is a matter of faith, not fact. You believe it. Science and faith might not be mutually exclusive, but they should not be confused. Confusing matters of faith with fact is the most common mistake God botherers make. And yet AGAIN, I suggest that if you wish to discuss matters of faith, then you should start a separate, new thread for that purpose.

And Bahaiism, don't forget them. The coolest guys who use those books, so that is four

And frankly, science will take account of god if and when there is any evidence for it. The point is that science has done a very good job at developing explanations of the physical world based on reason and observation alone.

It is either ironic or disturbing that four hundred years after the Church imprisoned the guy who discovered those rings for life and burned his colleague at th stake (that would be Bruno, the guy who recognized that stars were other suns that probably also had planets and maybe life), we have religious types demanding obeisance. Religion and science don't have to be opposed, except that there are so many religious people who want to oppose science. Even today, religious people perpetuate lies about evolutionary biology and try to ban science and are central to the anti-climate science hoax. Given the history going back centuries of hostility to science and scientists, it is understandable why many scientists take a dim view of religion needing to insert itself all over where it doesn't belong. Believe whatever you like and I wish you great wisdom and peace from your faith, but let's not bring it where it doesn't really belong. We have too much of that is it is and it causes no end of suffering. Given all that, perhaps you can understand why I take a dim view of bringing religion into it. (And if you like I can show you the parts of the Bible that are just howlingly wrong when it comes to the nature of the universe. So much for literal infallibility I guess)

Thanks
