What are the good things about other sites?
With the ODC, we have a lot of players playing at PlayDiplomacy. And, I'm sure many of our membership play on other sites as well as webdip.

What are the features you really like from those sites that you wish webdiplomacy had?

Should Murica do anything in Syria to stop gas attacks?
So many armed groups exist in Syria. Is it too risky for America to get involved?

Meat-Gamey
Can someone explain to me what this is because I don't understand it. Is not wanting to eat meat because you've had bad experiences with its flavour in other time periods a reason to be investigated by the FDA? If so, aren't all meats fucked?

How Does the Website Assign Nations to Players?
It seems like when I join a number of games at nearly the same time, I get the same country if I'm playing the same variant. Is this because the game assign your country by when you join if noone else has that country, or is it simple coincidence? Thanks!

Block player feature
I was wondering about a "block player feature" so that people can avoid particularly unpleasant players. Should you block a player, you can't join a game with them in it and they can't join with you in it. I'd imagine that'd last for that game as long as the player is in it to prevent fishing for identities

Meta-gaming
Can someone explain to me what this is because I don't understand it. Is not wanting to ally with a player because you've had bad experiences with their stability in other games a reason to be investigated for meta? If so, aren't all non-anon games fucked?
damian (675 D)

Isn't that the reason for having non-anon games so you can make decisions based on a players past record.

Is it metagaming, sure, sort of. But it's metagaming explicitly set up to be part of the non-anon experience.

If players don't like that they're welcome to play anon games. Or get fucked. IMO.

I think good players strive to get better. Overcoming meta bias could be a sign of a versatile diplomat

Well, when you have people like Brad silencing players because of political beliefs and former mods like Valis making false accusations of cheating to his mod buddies to gain advantage in the game that isn't at all based on past behavior. It is waaaay beyond bounds.
Durga (3609 D)

I am of the opinion that the situation DO describes is nót metagaming. I am backed up in this by the rules*. I also recall a mod explaining that it's only natural for players that have played before to have certain preferences due to good/bad experiences.

"You cannot play a public game with players that you know outside of the site. (...) or even joining a game with any player of a previous game with a predetermined intent to ally with or attack certain players. Additionally, you cannot make deals based on any factors outside of the game."

So, you cannot join a game because you see Capt Brad will play in it and you want to make his life miserable. If you end up in a game with him, of course you can all-out attack him.
You also cannot join a game because you see a player you previously had a great alliance with, with the intent of allying them again. Once again, if you end up in a game with them you're naturally going to strongly consider allying with them again and that's fine.

There's nothing wrong with using prior knowledge of a player to make decisions in a game. It's basically unavoidable in non-anon. If I try to two-way with someone and they stab me for the solo, I know not to try to two-way with them in future - there's no way to erase that memory from my mind.

As everyone else is saying, if you don't want meta to come into the game, join an anon game. That's why they exist, after all.

On a seperate note, theres really no way to prevent meta-gaming 100%. Only the most blatant and game breaking types. Examples of meta-gaming which are hard to prove:
-siding against a player based on prior experience
-not wanting to side with a player based on personal differences.
-many others

What about muting a player from turn zero before any dialogue has happened based solely on arguments over politics. I've never played with Brad before ever as far as I know. That is joining a game with the intent to attack a particular player. He had that intent before I did or said anything

I just want to know what consists of metagaming and what doesn't because I'm confused and I've only recently started playing more non-anon games.
captainmeme (1632 DMod)
06 Apr 17 UTC
I should point out that metagaming has been a massive (and accepted) part of the board game scene for over half a century, and non-anon games mimic this experience. There was an excellent article written about American player Tom Haver (I'll see if I can find it), who spent a decade building up a reputation as someone who would never stab an ally, and then used that reputation to win the 2014 World Championship by stabbing someone who thought he would never stab due to the reputation.

And when DO complained about Brad's behavior, apparently Calis put in a completely specious cheating accusation against DO.
Ogion (3817 D)

That's not the kind of meta we are talking about captainmeme. Brad doesn't have any basis based in my game play to silence me in 1900

The mod team is investigating this. Feel free to email us if you have any questions or concerns.

This thread breaks the rule against making cheating accusations in the forum, so I'm going to lock it.

Newbie question about phases
I'm just learning about this game, but it sounds great. I'm trying to set up a game with some friends, but I'm not sure about all of the settings. If I set the phase length to one day, does that mean we have a day for diplomacy before all the moves occur, then another day to set retreats, and another day for build, so that there could be three days between attacks?

Anyone interested in a game with 8-hour phase? I played a 4 hour game by accident and it was a brutal 3 days, submitting moves in the dead of night (when only Devin Nunes was awake)! I was thinking that 8 hours is challenging but not insane. Any takers?
