Throwing a game
What is everybody's opinion on players throwing a game? There's a debate going on in a game of mine whether it's a form of metagaming or a valid strategy, or just unsportsmanlike, and I'd be curious to see how everyone feels about it.

@Ogion and @Capt_Brad need to settle down. From a global perspective, America and China are terrible polluters. China has a lot of people to provide for. America does so more for wasteful consumption purposes. However, a mitigating factor for the continued existence of America is democracy.

So, if only America would embrace renewables and penalize carbon footprint -- in line with the true economic cost of pollution, it would be better for humanity. The problem is, within America it would redistribute wealth from oil/gas/coal companies to OTHER people. That is where the Koch brothers and big oil are selling out America for their own personal gain. Their vehicle, imo, is the Republican Party.

@ Hauta if only America would embrace renewables and penalize carbon footprint

the 'public utilities' are as much of a problem. when i solarized my house i learned that i am being penalized when i produce power, i am required to pay for the maintenance of the lines. i thought that was already part of the program when i paid my regular bill before i got solar. and then they want to add a premium to my bill for the cost of them monitoring what i produce. here i am trying to do my part for 'global climate change' and i am being punished. i bet Ogion owns stock in SCE, that skinhead!
Hauta (1618 D(S))
03 Mar 17 UTC
@ssorenn, that video contained its own fallacies! The most prominent is the implication that if the benefits of fossil fuels outweigh the costs, that we should continue to use fossil fuels. But what if the cost-benefit analysis actually favors something else, like renewables (where the costs are undisputedly lower)? The video doesn't address that. Also, what about the situation where we don't get rid of fossil fuels entirely, but rather just limit them to the earth's ability to deal with them? Again, a very real solution ignored by the video.
Hauta (1618 D(S))
03 Mar 17 UTC
@Brad -- the penalty for renewables use is on the legislative agenda for all of the utilities (and others with deep investments in fossil fuel technology). The claim is that with fewer customers, they can't distribute maintenance costs without substantially raising prices. Thus, the tax on renewables "used to help utilities provide power to all" is really just another form of corporate welfare.
CAPT Brad (40 DX)
03 Mar 17 UTC
and the penalty for renewables is here in the socialist republic of california where on one side of the mouth they say conserve and then when you do they say 'foul' we can't afford that conservation and double the rates. they did it with water too. where the F@#k is that g*&damn d^%khead Jerry 'the coward' Brown?!? and that democrat-socialist-communist freaking state legislature? oh yes they are taking state money to defend 'undocumented immigrants' when they cannot properly fund the state dams!?!
Hauta (1618 D(S))
03 Mar 17 UTC
I read about the measure you're referring to. The utilities complained about it because it didn't raise rates on solar anywhere near what they wanted. It covered "maintaining the electric grid of transmission wires" which makes sense given that users of solar often sell extra electricity back to the grid. Not sure what you're bitching about, other than living in a state that gets it.
Hauta (1618 D(S))
03 Mar 17 UTC
@Brad, it looks like your complaint is about the $6/month fee. Hard to see why you are getting so worked up given that you are a multi-millionaire (almost).
CAPT Brad (40 DX)
03 Mar 17 UTC
there is more on there than that. still i did not have to solarize; my monthly bills were often less than thirty dollars. i clearly did not do it to save money. i got a battery backup because i don't trust the utilities to maintain their power service. we had terrible week long outages in long beach. no even though i am a conservative, i felt that i can contribute a small part to the problem even if i am skeptical. you see i walk the walk as opposed to the 'skinhead Og'. and (blush) i am not quite a MULTI-millionaire, close but not quite. may be by next year.
Hauta (1618 D(S))
03 Mar 17 UTC
As usual, you "walk the walk". But walking the walk works better if you are headed in the correct (as opposed to "right") direction. In my view, if you disconnect from the grid, you shouldn't have to pay any fee at all. But if you connect to the grid, even for just a little power, then you should have to pay a flat fee like everyone else (to maintain the transmission lines, etc). How does it work there if you are disconnected altogether? Can you avoid the fee?

@"However, a mitigating factor for the continued existence of America is democracy."

I haven't been following, but i have to disagree. If the US was functionally a democracy, people would choose to protect the environment, the would vote to curb emissions, and to save themselves ad their families from the danger.

But instead the US is run by corporate propoganda. China has the better system, they are investing in a massive way in solar power, because their autocracy is worried about the people threatening their power - and pollution in China is a huge issue for the people.

Corporations are powerful in the US, but not afraid of the people, the government is powerful in China, but is afraid of the people. The 'politically correct' US is harder to oppose because they pretend to be democratic. (I believe i created a thread on political correctness).

@orathaic, Meh. American democracy has a lot to be desired, I concede. (America's democracy suffers mostly from a corporate/rightwing effort to de-educate the masses.)

China's one-party rule is notoriously corrupt and capital flees whenever it can. Yes, China's one-party has delivered a lot and has been very effective to create a middle class (at least on the coast), but that doesn't mean that they are necessarily the best party to deliver continued growth on the coast or to deliver any increase of living standard in the hinterland. See Hong Kong where they have a thriving middle class. They are educated. They clamor for democracy.
CAPT Brad (40 DX)
03 Mar 17 UTC
@ Hauta you should have to pay a flat fee like everyone else

i did pay the fee like everyone else and then some. as to disconnecting, how can i help the electric grid disconnected? that is self-serving. but yes if i was completely disconnected i would pay no fee. but try getting disconnected. it would be easier to get a reality TV star and real estate mogul elected president
Hauta (1618 D(S))
03 Mar 17 UTC
@Brad, you mean to tell me that if you stopped paying your bill, they would continue providing service and/or continue charging fees?
Hauta (1618 D(S))
03 Mar 17 UTC
*not fees on unpaid bills, but transmission fee, etc.
CAPT Brad (40 DX)
04 Mar 17 UTC
no if i disconnected from the grid i would literally disconnect the wire from the grid and use only the solar power generated and the battery backup at night
Ogion (3817 D)

Why should reality need to "cool it" An inconvenient reality that according to US ideology, war on the US would be completely justified? That's just how it is.

Physics doesn't care that the US styles itself a "democracy" (although I'd suggest that in a democracy the person with the most votes wins the election and the party with the most votes gets to set the agenda. Neither are true in the US at the federal level generally). At the end of the day, the US is a terrible polluter responsible for 25% of all the carbon in the atmosphere. It is also the one that looks like it won't be doing a damn thing and in fact will be doing a lot to make things worse.

yes, transmission costs are real, but utilities have also overbuilt fossil fuel generation capacity to rake in more $$ from ratepayers, but frankly since those are obsolete investors ought to eat the cost of those stupid decisions.

ISIS defeated
Trump has defeated ISIS within 30 days as President as he promised. Were not sure how he did it. Were not sure how many nukes it took. Were not sure what the secret plan was. But I for one am glad ISIS is gone. Now we can move on to Anubis, Ra and Osiris. I never liked them either.
