Throwing a game
What is everybody's opinion on players throwing a game? There's a debate going on in a game of mine whether it's a form of metagaming or a valid strategy, or just unsportsmanlike, and I'd be curious to see how everyone feels about it.

Last year he was banned on April 1st but was told he could appeal his ban and return if he went through the proper channels. Has he done this? I am not saying I miss him - but curious if he appealed

Gunboat as Austria: Suicide pact with Italy
Premise: Whenever playing gunboat as Austria and you are attacked by Italy right out of the gate, one should always give up as many centers to Turkey as possible and get your last dying armies onto the boot to drag Italy down with you. This is the only way the madness will stop.

When did you realise that other people had a different point of view?
see below:

So for me it was about 15 years ago. I was living in Thailand at the time and I met another westerner. I spoke to him as I would any other foreigner meeting another foreigner in another country. However, this discussion soon moved to areas that I wasn’t particularly aware that there should be an issue about (and it was raised by my erstwhile companion). Being an Australian I naively, and quite happily, spoke to this fellow about healthcare for all as well as access to welfare for everyone who needed it. Needless to say this character soon began discussing an entirely different narrative to the one that I had grown up with, and that nearly all the people that I know subscribed to (the exception being an uncle who was a hold-over, and ex-SAS, of the British empire)

My question to the forum is: at what point did it occur to you that there was a different way of viewing the world, and what was the circumstances that bought it about?

At first I thought this thread was ridiculous, but I actually like it, after thinking on it. I think in my second year of high school I started being exposed to different view points and ways of viewing things, through the art of debate and forensics.

Growing up under a Conservative government in the UK in the 1980s and early 1990s, and seeing the suffering which their policies caused to some people, I realised that some people supported conservative, or more specifically what I would now call "Tory" or "Thatcherite" economic and social policies at around the age of 9 or 10.

If your sister has a different point of view than yours, maybe I'd get along with her.

that is what my parents said. they wanted me to be nice; don't hit your sister; don't take her toy; share your toy with your sister; boys don't hit girls; be nice to your baby sister; yes you have to hold her hand when you cross the street; don't make that face at me young man, oooh you're gonna get it when we get home. stuff like that

@ Jamiet99uk: maybe I'd get along with her.

i am sure you would. she lives in the house my mother left her and my other sister. she has no job, does nothing but complain, and will not pay rent to the other sister who is the co-inheriter, but will not sell to give her sister her half or get a loan to buy her out. i had to share but apparently she doesn't. my other sister is quite upset that she isn't getting her half. as for me, i forsook any inheritance thus i cannot nor will not arbitrate or suggest or support either in this issue.

yes Jamiet i am sure you would get along with her. no one else does.

Wait. Other people have different points of view from me? Ok just now.

Seriously, like CAPT_Brad, it was sometime pretty early in my like as a kid with my younger sister. I definitely teased her - not sure why - I was probably jealous of my parents' attention or something. And I knew how to get under her skin, even with stuff that wouldn't bother me. So I must have understood she had a different point of view at some level at that point. Thank goodness I don't do that anymore, except where those skills are called for in Diplomacy, of course.

Nobody has a different point of view from me. It's just a really long game of devil's advocate.

How can you not be aware of this from an early age? Lemon squash is an abomination, yet other people seem to actually like it. There are "friends" who think the best way of playing with cars is not pushing them around carefully constructed tracks, but instead throwing them down a hill. You room is an exemplar of efficient space utilization, yet your parents think it's a tip.

Perhaps the stage where you start to consider that other views aren't always wrong is more interesting...

Perhaps I should rephrase the OP. Yes I always realised that my brother had a different point of view, just like I realised quite early in life that my mother was essentially a crazy lady. The question should really be looked at as political beliefs...

Ie. When did you first realise that a long held belief in <insert political belief> was not universally held? What was the circumstance?
Octavious (2802 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
Ah, ok then. Politically speaking I was aware people had different political beliefs from each other before I really knew or cared what a political belief was. I'd be aware of people having very different beliefs at family Christmas Dinners, and I'd hear some of them before the blessed relief of being excused to watch my grandad's sporting car crash videos downstairs.

I think the fact that nobody honestly has a clue about the big questions is the great equalizer. We need to find common ground and work together. To screw the others over.

ISIS defeated
Trump has defeated ISIS within 30 days as President as he promised. Were not sure how he did it. Were not sure how many nukes it took. Were not sure what the secret plan was. But I for one am glad ISIS is gone. Now we can move on to Anubis, Ra and Osiris. I never liked them either.

WW4 over on VDiplomacy
Over on this site's child site, VDiplomacy, we are currently setting up a 36-player game of the World War IV (v6.2) variant. As of writing, we need to fill 12 more slots in 2 days. If you are in the mood for a relatively-balanced massive game of Diplomacy, come on over!
