Was Jesus a Vampire?
I was curious, if Jesus was a vampire, like most scholars now assume; was he malkavian, ventrue, brujah, toreador, nosferatu or tremere?

C++
Hey guys
I am redhouse, I used to play and debate here. I might play and debate again. But I have another question: Who knows a lot about C++? I may have some questions that seem trivial to those who know.

I was quite pleased when I got a C++ grade at school

Hey Redhouse, long time no see.

I'd be happy to answer any questions i can, though my C++ may be a little rusty.
I can try to help with C++ but I wouldn't consider myself an advanced user.

I have solid C++ knowledge. I have Stroustrup, Meyers, and Lakos books among others just inches away.

C++. That was cool in the early 1990s, 25 years ago. ;) Plz come up with something fresh!!

Hey all,

Special hi to Hellenic Riot, orathaic, Ogion and peterland whom I'm sure I've seen before.

So here is a first question.

1. If I understand it with the right libraries you can do everything, right? I could theoretically build up my computer from scratch, if I'm not mistaken.

2. Let's say I want to create an online program that would use maps (google maps, whatever maps) and people sending messages to each other, would C++ with the appropriate be a reasonable choice? Even if it's clumsy, would it work with the right library?

3. I'm trying to get a feel for how "central" C++ is to the computer experience. I always learnt that it was somewhat of a holy grail, that created most of what I am looking at now. Is that true?
C++ (and below that Fortran) was used to build lots of what we use today. The future, for the most part, is not being built with C++. If you want to learn a modern language I would suggest Python.

1. Theoretically, anything you want to do on your computer can be done in C++ even without any libraries. Whether that would be easy or worth doing might be a different story.

2. It would probably work. It would also probably be easier in a different language.

3. I'll let somebody older than me comment on this one.

I did C++ 5 years in the first half of 1990ies. Then I did java and now I do program in erlang every day since 10 years. Erlang has great libraries and it is possible to do great stuff in this environment. And it is open source freely downloadable from www.erlang.org. Lots of material and YouTube videos... Highly recommendable! I would never seriously think about going back to C++ or Java if I have the luxury of having a choise.

@peterlund, what is your sector (roughly)?

I work for Ericsson, Telecom. But there are lots of other type of apps around like bet365 (betting), banking apps and internet payments services and mobile app servers like "Game of War", facebooks chat service, databases "RIAK" competing with Oracle. Languages like "Elixir" is implemented on top of the Erlang VM (since this VM is industrial grade). The list goes on...

C++ is how I learned programming, and no it isn't the holy grail. It's only useful in the sense that from C++ it's fairly easy to step into Java and C# which are far more widely used today. The foundations of C++ are in object oriented programming which is what is widely used.

C++ is regularly being extended, they are adding features every three years now, C++11, C++14, and now C++17. Its templating paradigm is very useful.

It is used extensively in Real Time systems, High Performance systems (spent time on Wall Street financial systems), and embedded systems.

C++ is too low-level and powerful for it's own good. Takes too long to make things, and violates modern security policies. Hence C# and friends for modern applications development.

Ooh C++, that's a name I haven't heard in a long time.
Carebear (100 D)

Violates modern security policies? How does a language violate a security policy? O.o

Considering a lot of codes ICE, G-S, Bloomberg, and other financial systems use C++ and continue to develop in it. Lots of new systems in the payment industry use it. These are security conscious environments where EVERYONE's money is flowing through.
fiedler (1293 D)

oh you know what I mean *wink* *wink*
Carebear (100 D)
03 Feb 17 UTC
C++ has low-level abilities, but it also has very strong object oriented capabilities. C++11 and C++14 furthered this with template and RAII enhancements.

Fundamentally, security hardening is about programming practices. Programming C++ with solid security design patterns is quite sound and does not violate any security policies.

How does muting work?
I've never muted someone in a game before. Therefore, I am quite ignorant about how it works. Clearly if player A is muted by player B, B won't receive any messages from A while they're muted. What happens when B unmutes A? Do all the messages A sent to B while B had A muted suddenly appear, or are they lost forever?

New game Classic
Just went to a FTF tourney. Was fun. Want to play some more classic using the standard tourney rules (except of course 1 Day turns instead of 12 minutes).

Set it at 101d to filter for more reliable players. If that's too steep but you like the rest, chime in here, and I will make a new one with lower bet.
