Dip Directions?
In episode 11 of the Diplomacy Games podcast Kaner and I discussed longevity aspects and risk management of sites like webDip and vDip to ensure they grow and reduce the chances of going down (either technically speaking or perceptions of IP infringement). We said we'd create a thread for this for others to contribute. What do you reckon?

I found Trump's rhetoric about workers to be sadly hilarious. Bringing back manufacturing jobs to the US is a pipe dream, mostly because our globalized circumstances are not so malleable. Also, the idea that a wealthy capitalist businessman will have the back of ordinary workers is absolutely laughable. Furthermore, his "power to the people" bit was a total scam; there's no way we'll see any decentralization of authority under this administration. I hope that I'm wrong about these things. I am quite frankly worried about the future because the nation is increasingly polarized. Many of you have heard about the altright, but less well publicized is the movement of people to the far left. I personally know people that espouse Marxism-Leninism that didn't before this election. I don't often make predictions, but considering remarks Trump has made in the past about the media, and other things I have mentioned, I would not be surprised to see the jailing of journalists and the rise of ideologically inspired violence in the next several years in the USA.

@Praetorian72

that's a vapid analysis on manufacturing trends.

low paying low skills jobs are declining in the USA, but high skill well paying jobs, such as medical equipment manufacturing are on the rise. While many jobs are being lost to China and Mexico, China's state run and private sector haven't been doing as well recently, and the government is dropping US debt FAST, trying to liquidate cash. Also, the people in China are coming to terms with their government and social content is not very high right now. Meanwhile in Mexico, industries aren't improving rapidly, and the amount of output they have is being severely capped by their population. They have an expansive lower class, though I don't see any other industries pushing manufacturing out of the way, they aren't a juggernaut. Germany is one of our best competitors with manufacturing in terms of quality machines, but due to immigration they're finding more profit in lower-skill manufacturing, but still are diversified enough to compete.

The USA doesn't need massive subsidization to build infrastructure, we need a better environment for our businesses. Manufacturing jobs won't just magically "return" but we can sure as hell make it a nicer place to do business here.

PS, i'm not too big on Trump's economics
peterwiggin (14831 D Mod (S))

JamesYanik (548 D)

@peterwiggin

there are a lot of regulations that hurt businesses and prevent them from expanding. The FASB is changing their standards yet again so businesses have to use time and resources to adapt, overtime regulations are changing again, the CFPB is actually HURTING consumers prevent class action lawsuits, which allow big companies to take short cuts that help destroy smaller businesses, the tax code is constantly taking in additions, and administrative costs are about 60% of the burden on small businesses,the Independent contractor test is the department of labor trying to determine who can and cannot be classified as what kind of employee, once again big businesses can legally bypass this with enough filed injunctions, but small businesses can't. Meanwhile, tax incentives and cuts are being given to specific gov't supported industries, and by comparison, it's hurting competitor's businesses' bottom line.

Also, trade regulations and restrictions have constantly undermined expansion, whether it's across state lines or into other countries.

""The USA doesn't need massive subsidization to build infrastructure"

WE DON'T. all gov't subsidies do is temporarily shift the supply curve, and eventually companies will fall back to equilibrium price. giving hand outs lowers competition, creates monopolies, and increases our national debt, which necessitates more taxes be funneled into paying its interest.

gov't led industries generally are inefficient, which is why we only leave the Social industries to them: education, military (and some argue for healthcare, despite it being much more burdensome given the nature of demand for it)
JamesYanik (548 D)

Trump and Bernie each wanted Trillion dollar infrastructure plans, Clinton at least realized that massively boosting the national debt or temporary market shifts is BAD. And when I start defending Clinton...the alternatives must be pretty shit

Infrastructure, also, isn't a constant. the reason why people say we need gov't money to help develop it, is because it's out of date. if we invest heavily with gov't money, then lack of competition won't help infrastructure develop naturally. we'll have to keep throwing money at it again and again every so many years just to keep up with what competitive businesses would develop naturally, MINUS the massive debt burden we'd create (and the monopolies that'd ignore environmental laws and have local politicians paid for)

that i can actually agree with....difference is that im old and most of you are young and going to have to deal with tremendous issues for years to come. Building the countries infrastructure is of the utmost importance--almost at any cost

Also please don't put the words "fiscal responsibility" in a sentence involving Democrats and Republicans alike. Our government officials are the most irresponsible people with money since... ok, banks don't count, but AFTER them.

i remember when he was governor the first time. a disaster then too. although he is not as reckless as that ass gray davis or the bumblemater swartzenegger his fiscal policies have not corrected the public pension shortfall, curbed crazy spending schemes by the communist state legislature, nor reduced the bloated and inefficient CALTRANS bureaucracy and raised taxes on an already overtaxed population nor abandoned the bullet train fiasco that has under 25% of the money necessary.

Manufacturing will return 100% to the USA and the western world. It'll return in the form of automation with skilled technicians, but it will nevertheless return and manufacturing heavy countries with little human capital in contrast to the west will be fucked. China will see huge social upheavel as soon as the factories shut down, replaced by automation in the US.
