If you look at that 'why we have the electoral college' map which has been going around, the vast majority of the land is the US only takes up hal the population.

Imagine you could take another 300 million people and only use up 2 times the urban areas... And you'd still have loads of space.

The problem is, losing current settled land, not opening up new stuff. If we have occupied all the decent arable land everywhere on earth, and there is a small shift in rainfall patterns - we will see flooding in some areas and drought in others, and a signifigant drop in food production. (And drought resistant GMOs will only go so far...)

Urban areas where the majority of humans will live in the future take a lot of investment and development (from lots of CO2 emitting producion methods) but ultimately they don't groe enough food.
