I was looking through my games, and noticed this one:
gameID=174907As Germany, I had led the board in SC counts for most of the game. However, my solo bid eventually became unattainable. Instead, Austria was setting up to make a solo attempt. England, Italy and I spent four long years fighting a desperate battle to keep Austria down, away from 18. Austria broke through Italy, and his fleets made it to Tunis. England and I resolved our disputes after fighting the entire game to race to Tunis before Austria could lock down the Italian boot and the Med.
Austria was also making a push to come across the Berlin stalemate line to get the last centres he needed. He and I traded Berlin and Munich several times over the last few years, each trying to lock down the line. Finally, after years of teetering on the brink of losing to Austria, England and I finally managed to lock down our stalemate line in Germany and Tunis. Austria would have to end at 17 centres, and we would three-way draw.....
Only that's not what happened. Yes, the Western line was locked down in the spring of the final year. We were only waiting for the fall moves in order to kill off Italy before drawing. However, in the fall I made the ill-conceived move to free up Kiel for a build, convincing myself that a build might be useful if Austria dragged this on, and deciding that Austria surely wouldn't try for a centre that he had no chance of getting. Well, he did. Austria took Kiel in the fall, and solo'ed. It was that one little stupid move that costed England and I a hard-fought 3WD.
