Considering there was a post about Pokemon GO, ...
I'd like some advice about if it would be good to purchase a Russian Dragon's of Tarkir booster box for about $100 USD? Shipping prices don't matter, as my friend is in Russia at the moment (he is the one actually buying this, and is wondering if he should).

Statistics for ModernDiplomacyII
Is there any statistics about how common is the win by solos. Which nations has the most wins, and who the least wins. And statistics like that.
And also, in general, which variants would you say are the most played, and why?. Any thoughts?.

UK Politics
We have had an elected Head-of_State since forever, we've had a Prime Minister elected with something like 25% of electorate and now he is standing down to be replaced by new PM that no one elected. Home of democracy? I think not.

Ban all Trucks
Without trucks, the terrorist couldn't possibly have carried so many explosives. Trucks are weapons of mass destruction and must be banned. Goodness, at least do background checks on the truckers.

Meaning of "no in-game messaging"
First-time player question: if a game has a "no in-game messaging" setting, does that mean there's no communication between the players at all? Or is there just a specific kind of messaging the players should/should not use?

*Apologies if this is answered somewhere in the rules or another thread; couldn't find it specifically anywhere.

I need to buy a sword...
...to cut a croquembouche at my wedding.

Does anyone have any recommendations on types or places to buy?

I don't really know much about swords. One handed, for sure. I need to cut through this:

Well, you don't want to be that guy who turns the cake into Nearly Headless Nick, so I wouldn't recommend a blade any shorter than a machete (mine is 16" but I've seen them up to 20).

If you want to look cool while you're destroying an expensive wedding cake and don't want to drop the money for a real sword, something like this could be fun: http://www.ebay.com/itm/24-GLADIATOR-GREEK-Roman-Dragon-SWORD-MACHETE-Gladius-Medieval-w-SHEATH-/301987882577?hash=item464fe16651:g:UzYAAOSwmtJXY2sa

That said, you'd have to be in full costume, gladiator gear and all. That might not sit well with your fiancé, but if she's actually worth marrying, she'd probably be all for it.

I'm utterly confused. We've cut the cake with the family sword at every wedding on that side of the family I can remember, but the concept of buying a sword specifically for weddings baffles me. What significance does it carry that a knife wouldn't?

Mind you, weddings constantly surprise me. The last one I went to they didn't actually tie the knot. Apparently to many people tying the knot is just a figure of speech rather than part of the marriage ceremony. Crazy!

I'd recommend using a katana, simply because it looks cooler than most other medieval swords. I would recommend this one (http://www.ebay.com/itm/KATANA-sword-w-White-Sheath-KAMAKURA-36-2-25-6-1-03kg-/291792902873?hash=item43f0365ad9:g:GU8AAOSwZ8ZXCJvO) but that's just a waste of money.

In terms of being practical, I'd say that you're best off with one of these (http://www.ebay.com/itm/627-Japanese-Sword-edo-Tanto-Kaiken-dagger-For-self-defense-bamboo-netsuke-/131848276066?hash=item1eb2c50862:g:~YEAAOSwjXRXYNPB), but honestly, it only looks good if you can pull off the ninja look with it.

The easiest would be to buy a $20 shinai (bamboo sword) and sharpen it enough that it can cut a cake :)

Is the sword and croquembouche just a euphemism ??

if so 6 " should be fine..

There is this acquaintance of mone who makes giant swords, and i definitely recommend him (lives in the US now, and may have had his own brief tv show)

Look up Michael cuthulhu on youtube.

@ steephie

Is it cool? There is no real difference between a sword and a knife other than purpose. If you buy a sword for the purpose of cutting cakes it will always just be a fancy cake knife. It will no more be a sword than those pistol shaped novelty cigar lighters are pistols.

If you're going to invest in a fancy cake knife, don't waste money making it resemble a sword, but buy a really great knife that will handle cake cutting and roast carving duties throughout the marriage.

@Oct

Cutting a croquembouche with a sword sounded like fun, and since I don't live in Europe where people are constantly tripping over castles and whatnot, there isn't much of an option beyond buying one.

You can't really use a knife if you plan on slicing the top of it clean off, which is the traditional way to cut it.

Fair enough. It's amazing how many cultural differences exist in different weddings in western culture. If buying a sword feels right to you, why not?

Idk what kinda tradition this is but you should totally just go to a gaming convention and pick up like a master sword or something. Also, congrats on your wedding.

Weddings are like a deck of cards ..In the beginning all you need is 2 hearts and a diamond.. near the end all you want is a Club and a spade..

Congratulations Abge...I do hope that you'll be allowed to continue playing WebDiplomacy after you've completed your nuptials, might be a diplomatic move to wait until the honeymoon is done and dusted before spending all night playing live gunboat games. I do hope your intended spouse can support you in the style to which you are accustomed. Gosh I've also realised this means we can look forward to a future that has a bunch of runny nosed & grubby pawed little Abge offspring hacking your passwords and "helping daddy" with his WebDiplomacy games
