NEW ENGLAND PLAYER WANTED FOR WWI TEAM GAME!
England has gone into civil disorder so we need a new English player. This is a team game where the allies (Britain, France and Russia) fight the axis (Germany, Austria and Turkey).. England has missed a couple of phases but is still in a good position. The game ID is 179879. It is called "World War One team game". The password for the game is "shellshock". Once you have joined have a look at the other thread on the forum called "WWI team game" to get familiar with the rules.

New World War I team game - played as 2 teams. Starting soon!
I've been wanting to do this for a long time. I'm not sure if it's been done before. Apologies if it's already been done. I've created a game called "WWI team game" and the idea is that we will recreate world war one by playing the game as 2 teams; the triple alliance consisting of Austria, Germany and turkey and the triple entente consisting of England, France and Russia.

The NWO game at Redscape is about to get a bit radioactive. If you haven't seen or played this massive variant, take a look. The GM and a few players put out some high quality press as well.

I'm working on a project (may submit it to a zine, may just be for my own amusement) and I'm trying to find out what various Diplomacy communities view as the relationship in accomplishment between draws and solo victories.

Revisiting the Key Lepanto that works

Does anyone have a game where the KL worked? I have heard it talked about but I have never seen it past 1902, and I am skeptical. Where's the evidence? Where's the games?

I remember a game on PlayDip where it worked out, but it's just a list of orders as opposed to the nifty map history.

How do you define "actually worked"? Only one person can ever solo, so every alliance ever made has failed for at least half of the people in it.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))

Since the Key is an opening, I guess if the alliance ends in a strong Italy and strong Austria when midgame starts it counts as successful.

That ODC Key would've been much more successful if Italy had supported me to Greece in 01 rather than convoying to Tunis. I asked him to do that but he instead decided that he needed the extra army build (which did practically nothing) without telling me, which completely screwed up my strategy to build in Vie and push out into Galicia.

The problem with many attempts at a key lepanto is that you do not actually end up in Serbia in the fall of 1901. However there are certain variations where its quite possible for it to be succesfull (and by succesfull I mean killing off turkey, whatever happens after that is not to blame on the opening strategy but rather on the players).

Consider the following:
-Opening with rome - venice to fool the turk. Approach him afterwards and ask him if he'll support your fleet into greece to bounce the austrian. Will require a lot of trust on the part of the Austrian though, might require some stellar diplomacy. If it works out though you'll end up with the italian army in serbia and your army in venice can walk upwards into tyrolia in the fall.
-Instead of taking tunis, sail straight into the aegean in the fall. A lot of italians doing the key will go for a half-assed attempt. If youre in the aegean, taking bulgaria from the turk is pretty much guaranteed in the next spring.
-Allways involve the russian. Especially an italian promise of a wintergreen should be very appealing to russia, regardless of whether you actually want to proceed with that or gang up on russia afterwards with Austria.

In my opinion, if you do not accomplish at least 2 out of 3 of the above during negotiations, the normal lepanto is the boring but safer option - especially for austria. As the Italian a key lepanto is hardly ever a bad thing for you id say.

I've tried many many Lepantos on this site, but none have worked, either Austria doesn't help at one point, or they instead start helping Tukey,

I have had one successful Key Lepanto, many years ago. It only worked because Russia was completely taken by surprise. He had never seen it before. Austria did well out of it too, but he lost the end game.

Considering you had a dumb Turkey with four fleets not attacking you, and a NMR England...

Turkey loved me because I actually told him about the Key ahead of time. The bounce in Serbia was planned. England NMR was lucky. That's true.

This is my number one pet peeve. The "Key Lepanto" where Italy ends 1901 with armies in Serbia and Tunis IS NOT AN EFFECTIVE OPENING. DO NOT DO IT AS AUSTRIA.

The whole point of a Key, like Vecan said, is to get Bulgaria as fast as possible. The whole point of giving Italy an extra build is so he can forego the build in Tunis and go straight to Aegean Sea. There is literally no other reason to do it.

For example, look at the game Floodgates linked (gameID=158084). Compare it to the standard opening with Austria in Serbia and fleet Greece. It is strictly inferior. Ignoring color of units, the only difference is that Greece is unclaimed and the fleet is in Albania instead of Greece. This is *strictly* worse and no surprise- Russia and Turkey easily fought it back. If you are going to make a risky move, it has to gain you tempo. Convoying to Tunis forfeits that tempo. If you are an Italy and Austria offers to "Key Lepanto" in the way where you convoy to Tunis, you should just do that then kill Austria. Like this: gameID=166519 (which is what Valis is referring to- he as Turkey was like "why would I work with you you are clearly trying to Key" and then I was like "I convoyed to Tunis what are you talking about" and then he was like "I don't get it so instead of working with you I'll die instead").

tldr- if you want to run a key, go to Aegean Sea in 1901. Period.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))

The dumb part about Turkey isn't him helping you. It s him building three fleets that do nothing.

I did a Blue Ocean Lepanto and won as Italy. It was so shocking to me I made a video of it. I could post a link on my blog if you want to see it; although in all honesty, the key to a good Lepanto is well conceived discussions with all players on the Board. I think every game is pretty much a subjective statement on the individual players and how you relate to them in a meaningful and positive way.
