Question
Is it socially acceptable to go to a buffet alone? Discuss.

I'd say no less than going to a regular restaurant alone.
A more interesting question is why you think the forum needs this answered.

Eh. More curiosity. I am in a buffet as I wanted various small bites of different food. But then j thought to myself whether or not it was odd for a single person to be in a buffet alone. Also I figured this forum usually answers nonsense that has nothing to do with diplomacy so I figured bam have at it.

I was at a buffet alone today. For the second time in a row another customer thought since I was at the buffet counter getting more food, my table was vacant and therefore decided to use it. The first time my stuff was dumped on another table and my table was moved. This time the customer used my table to dump his empty tray on it.

Both times the "I'll be right back" sign was ignored and the first time it was moved with my food and drink.

I've been going for over 30 years by myself and in groups and common courtesy has final disappeared. When you get up to get more food, don't leave anything behind that you might want including food.

I actually was at a buffet alone while this thread was being written. Was working late and wanted to eat. Not sure I see the issue.

Okay, I was just curious. I went in and never have I eaten at a buffet alone. It was quite enjoyable actually.

I rarely go out alone but when I do I get my money's worth and then some at a buffet.

Eating at a restaurant is weird and alone is weirder.

Does it matter. People say going out to eat and see a movie by yourself is weird, but when I'm single I do that every Friday night and love it. If you want to go to a buffet alone, do it. The only thing stopping you is fear of judgment, which is silly and should be abandoned.
CommanderByron (863 D (S))
26 May 16 UTC
Twelve- I don't think i'm afraid of judgement as much as i am curious of how society looks at things. My main curiosity was just if it were odd as I had never gone to a buffet alone and generally have always reserved buffets for family outings.

all this feedback is great though, really answering my curioisty
Eleven (501 D)

That's fair. Have you ever gone out and actively noticed somebody dining alone? When you're with others, I mean. I couldn't even describe a single other patron after dining out with friends. You're right in that, not in the moment, it's deemed odd. As if enjoying your own company weren't okay. I have no idea why that is or where it came from though. I guess I'm curious as well.

P.S. How'd you know it was my birthday the other day?
steephie22 (182 D (S))

It was a lucky guess and you just told him he was right? :-)
CommanderByron (863 D (S))
26 May 16 UTC
Thirteen- I personally hadn't noticed anyone eating alone until I was thinking about it today eating alone myself, and I couldn't find a single individual person.
Eleven (501 D)
26 May 16 UTC
Generally how it goes. Spotlight effect and all. I just don't really get it, I guess. I've had friends beg me to see some stupid movie because they "can't go alone". Why can't you?? Now you've got me all curious and I'm going to have to look in to it. Gee, thanks Byron. It's funny too because going out to eat alone all you have to think about is how delicious the food is, going out with others the food is pretty much background. Might as well have invited them over and cooked. Way cheaper haha.

P.S. somethingsomething finally a teenager, etc

Eleven (501 D)

This is why you can't go to a buffet alone. That sounds like the title of someone whose never been alone, which is fine by them because they can't stand their own company anyway. ;)
Now, if you were white trash like me, the thought of not going because you're alone would never have crossed your mind haha.

@CommanderByron: It is socially acceptable to eat, therefore it is ok to eat at a buffet, therefore it is ok to go to a buffet alone. It is a great way to try a lot of foods. (No punchline this time!)

What I've learned from reading this thread:
A. Putin is more of a food snob than LTCByron.
B. Sixteen and Counting possesses a level of self-confidence that makes him and Diplomacy natural fits for each other.
C. The good sense that most posters here have about the propriety of eating alone at a buffet.
CommanderByron (863 D (S))

InsideAsthmatic72 - What makes me a food snob? I just was curious what peoples perception was, as I never had been in a buffet alone and got to thinking about how society views different dining experiences. I've actually done some more research and found that there are people who study the cultural beliefs of people based on dining.

"If you love food poisioning then buffets are for you." - Putin33

You can get food poisoning easily at other food places.

There's one restaurant I'll never eat at after a reviewer saw the manager retrieve food from a dumpster that health inspectors tossed out as stored at too high a temperature for safety. Another I never went back to had food that fell on the floor cut up and served as free samples to customers while they waited.

"What makes me a food snob?"
Nothing, actually. I wasn't suggesting you were one at all. I was simply saying that, in comparison to you, Putin is closer to being one (and as for whether he himself is one, full-bore, I have no idea).
Eleven (501 D)

@InsideLoser72,
I sense a backhanded compliment! But I'm too tired to actually give it much thought. Though I will say if Diplomacy and I were perfect for each other one would think I'd be halfway decent at the game, but alas.

First, how much money do you earn a year, fellow webDippers? What's your salary? Second, how many of you are slightly uncomfortable answering the first question? (and why?)

Should You Be a Vegetarian?
I’ve always wanted to see how people respond to this argumentation, and this is the perfect thread for it. So I’d like to take an interesting position, you shouldn’t be a vegetarian (or at least the reasons for doing so aren’t actually that strong).

Should you be a Venusian?
Personally, Venus/Aphrodite is my favorite ancient deity. I believe Aphrodite was closer to the original mother goddess then most, plus the planet Venus is bright and beautiful. Or, we could talk about all these YouTube videos that say aliens are coming, are here, etc.

Ban resulting from misunderstanding
A friend of mine, username SeananFinn, was banned while playing a match with myself and others because we were logged into the same computer. The Game Master should know that every player of that match knows one another, and that we did not log onto the same computer, just the same mainframe server at our school at roughly the same time, which has one monitored IP address. We would appreciate it if someone would unban him before the game moves on. Thank you.
