I'd like some advice about if it would be good to purchase a Russian Dragon's of Tarkir booster box for about $100 USD? Shipping prices don't matter, as my friend is in Russia at the moment (he is the one actually buying this, and is wondering if he should).

Statistics for ModernDiplomacyII
Is there any statistics about how common is the win by solos. Which nations has the most wins, and who the least wins. And statistics like that.
And also, in general, which variants would you say are the most played, and why?. Any thoughts?.

2016 Australian Federal Election
Well Malcolm Turnbull is visiting the Governor General, so an election is imminent, and probably a "double dissolution" election with the full Senate being dissolved, not half as is usually the case

^And just to be clear, my complaint about the too-low limitations of how many preferences are required applies only to above-the-line voting.

@OS: It won't stop small parties from competing - it hasn't in NSW and they've been doing it for over a decade. Small parties can get elected without a full quota because once there are no more preferences to distribute, the top remaining candidates are elected.

It will stop the stupid microparty vote farming - referred to rightly as Group Voting Ticket lotto. That was about as undemocratic a system as you care to name. Voters had nothing to do with getting them elected - it was all down to party psephologists guessing right and magic back room preference deals.

But don't take my word for it, Antony Green's blog link is right above - he has thousands of words of real analysis on the topic under the Senate Elections tag of his blog.

As for what will happen - yes, they *should* join together. Doesn't look like that will happen this election, as usual the "generals" are fighting the last war not the current one.

Thanks for your comments Outside Smoker

It's exciting in Mayo, now that there's a definite possibility of rebellion and Jamie Briggs might lose a blue ribbon safe Liberal Party seat we've been visited by Malcolm Turnbull and John Howard is visiting Adelaide as well...and in response to the "Xenephon threat" the gambling industry has opened it's collective chequebooks and donations to fight Xenephon are reported to be pouring into the coffers of both major parties

Good to see all the Aussies around.. I'm the Fremantle electorate and after our previous representative retired the new Labor candidate was sacked for a past Union related assault and the new Liberal candidate was sacked over racist/sexist insults to a former boss, all in the last 2-3 months.. Does not inspire a lot of faith.

To be honest I hope the government gets a decisive win so that there's a mandate for some tough but responsible decisions to be made. Ever since 2007 Australian government has come across as rather indecisive and weak.
Liberal or Labor I think a govt that can make decisions and stick to them long enough to give them a chance, and have room to sacrifice poll numbers to make long term decisions, will be better for the country than constant cynicism and reshuffling the government whenever a 49.9% approval rating comes in..

Please don't let the ALP back onto government, they haven't been adequately punished for their monumental incompetence last time. As for the Liberals, I think it'd be good if Malcolm Turnbull can crush those idiotic ultra Conservatives within his own party ...the chaps like Corey Bernardi and the Abbott faction

Apparently dog whistling Islamophobia is the Liberal campaign's tactic of choice (see what they are doing to Dr Anne Aly). It turns out there's not much difference between Turnbull and his so-called right flank.

I had a fun day handing out how to vote cards for Rebekah Sharkie at our local polling booth yesterday.. it opened on Monday 20th, two weeks before election day to allow people to vote early. To vote early a person has to satisfy certain conditions, eg they live more than 8 km from the booth, they will be working on election day, etc. Huge fun..the ALP candidate was there in the morning but left about 1pm to go to another booth at Mt Barker, and the "lady" who took over for him spent more energy " debating " with the Liberal Party chap than handing out her how to vote cards.
Then a chap turned up and illegally filmed us and the polling booth, and the officials swarmed out and stopped him, then made him erase the footage and gave him a severe talking to, etc

The election is on the same day as a major Golf Comp I'm in..at the moment its a tight call as to which I will go to ..

The attack on Dr Anne Ally was stupid ..and really obvious ..

Our federal gov need to have 4 year terms to make real changes and not be planning for the next election..new voting rules as stated before are weighted in favour of the major parties ..its the only thing they agree on other than pollie pay rises..

I think it would be interesting to see how liberal handled a minority parliament..I actually think that has been good for the country ..not in the short term but in the long term..

it certainly has scared the crap out of the big 2..

Hunter Fishers Party for me and the majors in the bottom of the card.
MajorMitchell (1605 D)

I agree with the suggestion of four year terms..fixed at that, unless it's a double dissolution. You could vote early, they're reasonably easy on meeting the conditions, just say you'll be traveling but don't say where..around a golf course

Hoorah !!!!
Victory to Rebekha Sharkie and defeat for Jamie Briggs in the seat of Mayo. Jamie Briggs will now be forever remembered in Australian political history as the Liberal Party MP who LOST an absolutely "blue ribbon, jewel in the crown of the Liberal Party" safe seat...how wonderful.
I was a scrutineer at a local polling booth and realised quite early in the evening that Ms Sharkie would win easily.
The success of the Nick Xenophon Team will mean the morally bankrupt modern day robber barons of the gambling industry in Australia will be having apoplectic conniptions. I expect them to fight even harder to protect their ill gotten gains, their war chests are well funded, and their slick talking mercenaries can be expected to say and do anything in the battles ahead.

A probable hung parliament...

and now onto the tennis
I think Antony Green's "prediction" that "we won't know the winner tonight" should be copied by election-night commentators in this country, and probably elsewhere too. It's much more interesting -- and more informative -- than the usual and (to my taste) somewhat bland "too close to call" or even than the usual Australian "on a knife edge," which I enjoy even less than "too close to call."

@kaner
"A probable hung parliament..."
What is it that Nick Xenophon now owes substantial quantities of to whomever it is that he promised it when he assured everyone that this wouldn't be the result?
^And by "this country" I mean the United States.

At the end of the day I hope the major 2 parties get the message ..basically we don't want either of them in their present forms..

We need a powerful and reasonable third party who can actually form a government. Or a massive reshape by one to major 2..

Love the way both LIB and LAB tried to squeeze out little independents and in typical Aussie fashion we said clearly

.."No fuck that "

I think there were about 17 Senators not in Liberal / National Party & ALP in old Senate and it looks like there'll be about 21 in the next Senate...and I'm not up on exactly how the Senate selects the half who get 6 year terms & the half who're only in for 3 years.

Victoria might be swapping David Liejyenhold ( "Liberal Democrat " ? ) for Derryn Deadly Hinch
Queensland loses thugby great, the " brick with eyes" ( as described by Roy & HG ) , but will he like the next mentioned person, & Johnny Howard..do a Lazarus in times ahead ?... and Pauline's BACK !!!! ( a female s.Trump.et without the sqillions to dog whistle the race card & general myopic & stupid xenophobic ignorance tune ( NOT Xenophon ~ic tuning at all )

I'm glad independent Lower House MP Wilkie was re elected, and equally glad " Toad of Toad mining & scamming " as I satarises the bloated Baron has departed from the House of Reps

In South Australia I don't think Bob Day will retain a Senate spot...
Most of the new independent Senators are conservative
I think the Greens might be reduced from Ten to nine
and both Lib Nats combo & ALP lose Senators

So yes in response to a clear plan to reduce the number of independent Senators, the collective reply from the public has been a definite, no no no, try life in Parliament for at least 3 years with a few extra in a slightly different mix, and now the Liberals & Nats can have a crack at life in a government in a wafer thin margin over ALP and a few independent's holding a sword of potential Damacles / no confidence

I always loved Malcolm Turnbull's declaration that be wouldn't deal with minor parties to form Government, given the existing arrangement with the Nationals
MajorMitchell (1605 D)
07 Jul 16 UTC
I also think from the evidence of the last " hung" Parliament that the smart independent members in the lower house know that their best game is the long game..don't trip an election early..get the Parliament to fun the full three years, allows them to use resources of incumbency to build for re election
MajorMitchell (1605 D)
07 Jul 16 UTC
Cool typo..get Parliament to fun run for a full term...
David Leyonhjelm is from NSW, and I suspect (maybe this has been written up somewhere? or maybe I'm just making rash assumptions) he's the reason that the government included the logos-on-the-ballot provision in its election rules changes.

In Victoria, Derryn Hinch IS replacing a micro-party candidate, but it's Ricky Muir -- literally the face of the AMEP -- who's losing out. Or John Madigan, if you prefer that interpretation.

As for the House, the Liberals need to win only 2 of the 5 seats that Antony Green is still in deep doubt about for the Coalition to reach exactly 75, and with Bob Katter's declared support on confidence and supply that's enough to form a government. If they find him difficult to work on any particular legislation in future, they will have an assortment of independents plus Nick X Party's Rebekha Sharkie to turn to as live options. (I somehow doubt that Adam Bandt will count as a live option, but maybe he will.) Since they'll need Nick Xenophon's support to get things through the Senate, they may turn to Sharkie on a regular basis anyway, even when Katter is already on board.
So Turnbull now has confidence-and-supply support from Cathy McGowan and Andrew Wilkie. That puts him at 3 crossbenchers + 73 Coalition MPs = 76 seats, enough to ensure the Coalition stays in office, though not enough to ensure passage of ordinary legislation. But if a couple of more outstanding seats go the Liberals' way, as seems distinctly, possible, the House of Representatives seems likely to be safe for the government on all points.

The Senate, of course, won't be, no matter what the rest of the votes turn up.
MajorMitchell (1605 D)
08 Jul 16 UTC
You're probably right about David Leyonhelm
It's probably going to work out that the Liberal & Nats will end up with a margin of two seats in the House of Representatives, but they have to use one as Speaker, and rely on the support of Katter, McGowan, Wilkie and Sharkie, given that Bandt is likely to side with ALP.

I think it's most interesting, given the experience of the last hung parliament 2010 to 2013. Looks like the ALP is preparing to be as "co~operative & helpful" as Tony Abbott was, so the roles are reversed, excepting that the Liberals & Nats will be slightly better positioned than Gillard was. Gillard was totally reliant on support from Independents, but the difference isn't that great.

I like it, the people have said you're not getting it easy, no rubber stamp. Legislation is going to have to be damn good and fair to get through the hoops and obstacles.

I think the ALP would be smart to be cooperative when possible, after all if the Liberals & Nats can get ALP support then the independents instantly become irrelevant in terms of numbers

One lower house seat Herbert ? still undecided ...good old Queensland ( I watched 3rd game of thugby state of origin ... A " dead rubber game" given Queensland had won first two games.. and scored an early try in the 3rd game....So the umpires worked hard..giving penalty after penalty to NSW...and NSW made hard work of scoring..so the umpires sent a Queensland player to the sin bin. ...Eventually NSW got in front on the scoreboard...then one of their players got sin binned...all good entertainment... Then Queensland scored and grabbed the lead late in the game.. but NSW scored in the last minutes to win...great tv product.)

Melbourne gives us Adam Bandt & Victoria Robert Di Natale ?

& SA contributes Nick Xenophon & team
Tasmania makes it contribution..Mr Wilkie & others

Meaning of "no in-game messaging"
First-time player question: if a game has a "no in-game messaging" setting, does that mean there's no communication between the players at all? Or is there just a specific kind of messaging the players should/should not use?

*Apologies if this is answered somewhere in the rules or another thread; couldn't find it specifically anywhere.
