The trolls of Mr Vladimir Putin
The dictator in Moscow have set up a trolling agency in Saint Petersburg that sole pupose is to do trolling of forums like ours and similar forums all over the Internet. Please read more about it on wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolls_from_Olgino or just Google on "Russian trolling".

"He was. So was Hitler though, so that doesn't free him from guilt."
If you want to get technical about it, Hitler wasn't directly elected. He was chairman of the Nazi Party, and they had a majority, so Von Hindenburg appointed him as Chancellor. Putin on the other hand has been directly elected as president a number of times.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
08 May 16 UTC
I didn't really want to get technical about it :-)
A parliamentary democracy is also a democracy. Dictators can rise from functioning democracies.

@leon1122: I'm not interested in whether he was officially a dictator, but Hitler did use some extortion to get his majority if I recall correctly, so he wasn't exactly playing nice. Putin may or may not be playing nice to keep his power as well.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
08 May 16 UTC
Also, if you have the means and the intention to abolish democracy as soon as it gets in your way, you are de facto already a dictator in my opinion. The question is whether Putin meets both those requirements.

Yes he has been formally elected many times but only the first time or two it was sort of fair. Now he has 100% control of all media and no opposition politician has any chance to get his/her message through. Putin even murders opposition politicians and independent journalists.

Maybe a good word for people like me is cynical or pessimistic. I guess it is our (Sweden's) closeness to Russia that make me so worried. But then again when the third world war breaks out between the dictator in Moscow and the newly elected maniac Trump, it does not really matter how close you are. Then we all die together. :)
steephie22 (182 D(S))

Trump wouldn't go to war with Putin. They actually like each other, and Trump is isolationist.
peterlund (1310 D(G))
08 May 16 UTC
@Hannibal76: Obviously the most important reason is the simple fact that Russia recently under Putin's more and more autocratic rule have gotten the habit of attacking neighbouring countries like Georgia and Ukraine
kasimax (243 D)

@peterlund When Sweden does military drills with NATO and entertains the thought of joining an alliance whose sole purpose is to isolate Russia militarily, you're gonna have to expect some practise nucleur strikes. Any friend of NATO is a potential enemy if Russia. That's not a matter of opinion, it's fact.
As for Ukraine, I recall a thread where you and Putin where arguing over the actual nature of the Ukranian conflict. He wasn't able to change your mind, neither will I. As for Georgia: the government also was planning on joining NATO. The government then attacked 2 regions that had declared autonomy and professed the desire o become a part of the Russian state. Russia invaded to protect its geostrategic interests.
If you're going to say that Russia doesn't have the right to invade neighboring countries for not doing as Russia pleases, you're conpletely right. But a country simply cannot join an anti-Russian alliance, and station troops and heavy weaponry on said country's territory (especially if said country is on Russia's border) and expect Putin to sit back and let it all happen.
If the US and it's allies desired peace and no geostrategic conflict with Russia, NATO would have been dismantled in 1991. You can't look at problems between Russia and Sweden purely as problems between neighbors. There are larger forces at play. Always. Be it in Ukraine, Georgia, or Syria.
peterlund (1310 D(G))
09 May 16 UTC
@Hannibal76 So if nuclear strike practice runs are normal, how often does Russia practice this towards the UK or the USA?
peterlund (1310 D(G))
09 May 16 UTC
Sweden is currently not a member of NATO and we have no nukes ourselves. So why does Russia practice this against us? My guess is that Russia is trying to scare us to not joining NATO, but I am confident that the reaction will be the opposite.

If you're really that worried, keep your passport up to date, make sure you have a stash of cash around and decide where you want to live in case shit hits the van.

You're a European citizen and you can move freely through most of Europe. In the worst case scenario you'll be like the most priviledged refugee ever.

Just sit back and watch or figure out what you can do to make things better. Don't spend your time worrying about nothing.

That's just my two cents, but we've already established that I don't get why anyone cares about whether they're 'home' and I'm in a minority..
TrPrado (461 D)

Unless there's a part of Sweden that actively wants to be part of Russia, you should expect to be safe from Russian invasion.

steephie22 (182 D(S))
10 May 16 UTC
I guess I decided to go with a compromise between 'worst case' and sort of realistic. Which doesn't make sense to begin with, I admit, because now it's neither.
How's this?
Worst case scenario: You are caught in the initial onslaught of nuclear war and die instantaneously without even noticing the end of the world was here.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
10 May 16 UTC
How is dying instantly in a nuclear war the worst case scenario? How about *not* dying instantly in a nuclear war?
Litter Picker (100 D)

Pretty much what the title says. We often consider the "right thing to do" when making a decision, but why do moral arguments matter? Is it due to societal structures, personal interest, definitive moral good? I'm curious about everyone's thoughts on this.

Why can't I select nowhere to retreat, or disband a unit when I want?
The rules say I can elect to disband instead of retreating, but there seems no way to sav his choice in the GUI. So when I am faced with disbanding as a result of having nowhere to retreat to, I seem to have no choice but to let the clock run down, which slows down the whole game for me and all the other players.
