Help me think of a more useful Computer Science end project!

The current plan of the teacher is for 10 16 to 18-year-old students to create and program a machine with lego-stuff that effectively sorts different colours of candy. I'm really annoyed by the prospect of spending many hours on creating something utterly useless.
Better ideas? It needs broadness, with different aspects and groups working together.

Submissions are now open for articles for the first issue of the Diplomacy Openings Journal. I encourage you all to put you minds to it and come up with an article; maybe we can land this plane together!

The recommended length for an article is between 500 words (for example: a short piece that discusses the benefits of a specific move) up to 10,000 words (for example: a complete dissertation on the opening options available to England and their strategic consequences). In other words: don’t write a paragraph; don’t write a book.

Submissions are accepted from all levels of players, from World Champions to brand new e-mail players, so please share this with any sites you know to discuss Diplomacy.

Is there a deadline by which you need to have these submissions in? I have a few ideas, but it'll take a while to write something moderately acceptable.

Finally; somewhere where I can write about the merits of the early German invasion of Austria. And other high risk high reward strategies that the mods hate when they work out for me. If I have time, anyway.

There's no specific deadline - if it misses publication this time around it will be available for issue 2.

As for which openings to write about: write about the good, the bad, the unusual... just write considered articles, not just "I totally did this in a game once".

The Valis Gambit would be a GREAT article because it looks into a different opening altogether - strengths, weaknesses, continuations, strategy.... people would LOVE to read that, even if it is a peripheral opening. I highly encourage you to write it up :)

I can't make any promises because it actually falls much more into "I did this once and then we all discussed it and/or laughed at me" rather than something I know inside and out.

Give it a crack! I'd love to see it drawn out to conclusions. I can, for example, see Fall 1901: A War - Gal; A Sil - Boh; (GER) A Mun - Tyl; F Den h as a devastating GR alliance starter!

You are using Wordpress so (to me) the concept of "issues" seems a bit old-fashioned. Surely each article is a post in itself so why tie yourself to a specific deadline?

Wordpress is a knowledge store a la wikipedia; the Journal is a separate beast altogether - a formal pdf style publication. The two compliment each other - a shorthand resource for people who want to read about an opening against in depth strategic and tactical articles about those openings. Well... that's my concept anyhow :)

Which Provinces Are Occupied The Least/Most?

I was thinking about this the other day. Which province, spends, on average, the highest percentage of its time being occupied by a unit. Or being empty? Empty, I think we can all agree would be North Africa (?) although I'm open to suggestion. But what about second most empty?
