World Diplomacy map, impossible move?

Autumn 2004 Russia F Ukr - Pol ???
How is it possible for a fleet to move from the Ukraine to Poland over land? There is no mention of any water way in the map variant or elswhere. Impossible move in my opinion. It would seem you are now allowed to move fleets from the black sea to the baltic???

5 minute games
Can anyone confirm that 5-minute games do not start with the addition of the seventh player but instead start when the sign up period was originally scheduled to end?

Thanks.

Newbie Question
Hello, me and some office mates have just discovered this massively awesome game but we're quite intimidated by the level of skill that people have.

Is it possible to create a game with less than a full team of players, such as 5 man in the regular map. Or playing 10 man in the world map that says 17 players?

You are only allowed to play with people you know in password protected games. What I suggest is that you make a game titled something like "PM for password", get all your buds to join, and then whenever someone requests the password, check their profile stats.

Thanks for that information but it didn't quite answer the question, can we play a diplomacy game that usually requires 7 players with just 5 of us? Or the modern diplomacy map (10 player map) with 5?

I would not recommend doing that, it changes the character of the game significantly. I would just invite people here on the forum to join you and advertise it as a beginners game. If you are aware of the basic rules that's enough, you'll get the hang of it while playing. A few more seasoned players in your game would probably make you learn the game faster. Have fun and welcome!

You will learn faster with the full complement of players for the map. Welcome!

Thanks for your advice.

Gee, i wish someone would answer the question i posed though.
Hey Disillumination! Welcome to the site.

The answer is no, you need a full complement of players. Problem is, as posted above, we do want a level playing field, so if you do set up a game with your friends, you'd need to disclose that to other players joining your game. Best way is to lock t via password, then announce it here on the forum.

Hope that helps!

"I wish someone would answer the question i posed though"

Not on webdip. It might be possible somewhere else but, as advised above, it is not actually a good idea.

If you do not have a full complement of 7 then I am sure that you could find some extras from this community.
Thankyou! Suddenly i get the answer and i get four of them in a row.

I really appreciate how helpful you guys are, looking forward to getting my ass kicked by some of you :P

We do have Ancient Med which is built for five players - that's probably a perfectly fine way to get a start.

You can also ask someone in the community to help guide you through how to play the game, giving the different nations tips on where to go next.

If you have a physical copy of Diplomacy and wish to play in person (face to face), then there are ways to play with only 5 people. The rulebook included with the game details those. with 5 i believe that Germany and Austria are dummy counties essentially.

On a related note, you might be able to get your friends and a couple more to set up a School of War. That's basically a game where either every player has a more experienced player to give advice and a professor or two to offer commentary on the overall game. It's an incredibly useful way to learn the game and a significant number of experienced players are willing to help out with these.

Okay, someone explain this Rank thing to me. I was a political puppet forever, and now I see this guy, BigDickBrick who has survived one game and CD'd 5 times. That's it. That's all he has done. Finished one game. And his Rank is Member. What is this Rank system based on?
