Update for Intro?
I've noticed in games people moving into a supply center, and then moving out before builds phase. I feel like there should be an update in the WebDip intro properly explaining how the seasons/phases work, because it seems like every newbie messes it up.

Some of you are definitely not the people to ask, but I'm asking anyway... what are some good campfire/bonfire/whatever songs? The internet is really cliche on this top-priority issue in my life.

ArmyandFleet - cancelled
I was just in a anon. game that got cancelled - after many, many turns. At last we (the big majority of players) succeeded in getting 1 player to vote cancel.
My question is, is there any way in getting to know who played in that game, now that it is cancelled?

PS: I was Russia.

Unlikely percentages or Bad Luck on Computer Draw
I am sure I am not the only one who suffered from this but as I drew Italy for the 4th time in 5 classic games this summer I thought I would hear about others with similar strings of playing the same country. I have only played about 10 classic games from the start since I joined and even that is well above average percentages.

There are openings in the vdip 1v1 ladder tournament

How does 1v1 work in practice? I've always uncharitably assumed it's an exercise in efficient movement with the winner crowned following a couple of rock paper scissors style guessing games. I take it there's a lot more to it?
Devonian (860 D)

It is a test of your tactics and strategy.

A player can do well by having good diplomacy skills, but if their tactics suck they will be mediocre overall. A good diplomat can obscure bad tactics but good tactics enhance diplomacy.

1v1 games allow you to isolate the tactics and improve them by themselves. If nothing else, if you end up in a "mono a mono" fight on the edge of the main battle, you can have more confidence.

As far as guessing is concerned, it requires the same amount of guessing as a regular 7 player game.

Octavious (2732 D)

Now that last bit is blatantly not true, although the rest of it feels pretty sound. Oh, is it gunboat or can you taunt your opponent and goad them into making errors?
2ndWhiteLine (2736 D(B))
20 Aug 15 UTC
1v1 isn't a test of anything except a strategic opening and how to delay your opponent while you race to 18.
Devonian (860 D)
20 Aug 15 UTC
How is the last part not true?
There are some psychological clues in a regular game, and probably not in a 1v1 game, but they will still be guesses.

It's typically global press, but there are no specific rules regarding it.. There are no rules against taunting or goading your opponent. Have at it.

2nd white line,
hmm... sounds like you're not too good at 1v1.

That said, its still fun as hell :)

And Devonian, look at my game history on vDip. Its 90% 1v1. Haven't played in a long time.
Devonian (860 D)

lol. I was taunting.

But, I do disagree that its all about the opening and being a race.
Brankl (231 D)

I played in the ladder for a while, and I think the openings are very significant. If someone makes a big mistake, like France going for Venice in F v. A, he's going to have a hell of a time coming back and winning. In all variants (I played F v A and Frankland v Juggernaut), I was surprised at the extent to which people ignored Portugal, favoring a move to the southern coast of Spain in order to enter the Med quicker. If you don't take Portugal early, it becomes very difficult to get later on.

It's an exercise in getting the country with positional advantage
Brankl (231 D)
21 Aug 15 UTC
Not true Fairfax. To move up the ladder, one has to win a match against a higher-ranked opponent. Each match consists of two games, with each person playing each side of the board so as to negate the effect of being assigned a particular country.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
21 Aug 15 UTC
Yes Brankl, and, if I recall correctly, there's been a large disappointment with the fact that when you play both sides of the map, much more often than not, each player wins one with the stronger country and it comes out a tie. Was there not just a large discussion and rules revision dealing with this phenomenon? Where someone who wants to tie (i.e. because they are being challenged) can pick a map where one power is much stronger than another.
thorfi (1023 D)

Devonian: Guessing against the same units split between different countries is definitely tactically different, both in gunboat and full press, to guessing against all units from the one country.

Even if you don't take into account the planning issues for the mixed countries, there are tactical options that are different because of dislodgement rules. Specifically:

1. beleaguered garrison (available for same not for mixed)
2. forward retreat (available for mixed not for same)

And... those are not trivial tactical options.

FINE I wasn't going to but you twisted my arm you bastard
Devonian (860 D)
26 Aug 15 UTC
Thorfi, guessing in a full press, gunboat, or 1v1 game may be different on a psychological level, but not on a tactical level. At any given time, there are only so many permutations of which moves can be done. So, tactically, the "possibilities" are identical. But, they are still going to be guesses regardless of the type of game; full press, gunboat, or 1v1.

I don't understand your concern with the beleaguered garrison and forward retreats. They both are available in all games.

I'm designing a board game and wondering about the production side..
I can't produce everything myself of course, but I do want to have as much control as possible and make it 'my' enterprise rather than giving the design to someone who takes care of everything while I'm getting a part of the profit.
I do need some professional stuff to really get it off the ground, though. No clue how to go about this. Approach the nearest board game store and get information there?
