US Spy Agencies Fall Behind Israeli Animal Spies

Israel used drones more effectively than the US for years so why not an animal spy gap.

Why do people draw so early?
I'm curious to learn y'all's opinion about putting up a draw vote very early on in a game. I especially see this in WTA gunboats, but I've also seen it elsewhere a lot too, where 1902/1903 - 5 or 6 of the players are already voting draw, before the game has even had a chance to develop. (okay admittedly I did the same thing in the last gunboat I played, but that's just 'cuz I drew Italy and I hate Italy).

CD Take-over
When you take over a country in civil disorder, can you put in orders for the current phase? Or do you have to wait for the current phase to end before actually taking over?

i.e. country CDs right away, I take it over in Spring 1902. Can I enter orders for the spring?

Help the noob
I am in my first game and need a clarification. The setting was for 1 day/phase. The first phase is coming to a close. Is that just the diplomacy phase and then I will have another day to get my orders in - or - do orders have to be in at the end of the first phase.

Sorry for the noob question but I have searched the site and could not find the answer.

Daoism and the Gita -- in the weeds
Starting this thread as to not hijack (any further) the philosophy book thread.

My conversation with Thucydides got turned around somehow. On sleeping on it, I think the disagreement isn't about what Daoism tells you to do, it's about what the Gita says.

My entry-point is that they have a different emphasis, though they are certainly coming at it in a different direction than most of contemporary Western thinking.

I eventually want to use a different example than teaching, but I have two parts of the TTC I want to point to:

From Section 2

. . . the Sage is devoted to non-action. Moves without teaching, creates 10,000 things without instruction.

From Section 23
Spare words: nature's way.

Violent winds do not blow all morning. Sudden rains cannot pour all day. . .

If Heaven and Earth do not blow and pour for long, how much less should human?

====

At least when I read these passages I was struck with the futility of repeating something over and over and over again.

My limited experience with taism comes from the nonreligious practice of taoist martial arts: tai chi, chi kung and kung-fu-nei-chia (the "wudang" wushu, different from the "shaolin" wushu, which is budhist). Take my words as one of a nonscholar and far from expertise, but I'd say ch. 2 has more to do with "learn by experience rather than from words" (which in practice does not mean that the teacher won't try to explain things with words, but just that the emphasis is "don't take my words too seriously, but take the practice as seriously as you can"). Ch. 23 has more to do with rage.

Yes, there's a certain minimalism in taoism, but I'd say it has not more to do with "whether" you act than with "how" do you act.

They've repeated us frequently this: "The perect form is the pure content" which means you don't make any needless movemente, and you don't stop making any necessary movement.

"The perect form is the pure content" is clearly not very "perfect" lol

I think we are agreeing more than we are not.

I don't think the TTC is forbidding you from using words. It is describing how they often don't work, and that doubling down on words gets less and less useful. The emphasis in Daoism is you are wasting your breath. You get to do that, fine.

I am just saying that the Gita's emphasis is different. It's emphasis is on action, how action is inevitable, how it can something to be absorbed in, but something you should not be attached to.

Daoism: You can accomplish much by being centered. Your actions can be so subtle as to not be noticed. These are often the most effective actions, even though they go unnoticed.

Gita: Do not operate in bad faith. Do not become attached to stillness. Do not become attached to the reward of the action, but the action itself.

Well yes, when I say teacher reminds us of things over and over and over again, I didn't mean he'll necessarily do it using words, but it's still true we often have to repeat movements over and over and over and over .... again.

Maybe the point is that the concept of teaching taoist martial arts is not the same as the concept of teaching something a child (it probably should be, and maybe we'd have better education)
kahudd2000 (157 D)

That makes sense. The arts (including the martial arts) --as well as coaching -- are some of the best models (and examples) of teaching I can think of.

I still just don't see the conflict in this? They are talking about different things.

And sure we repeat movements over and over and over again - that's what living things do. I don't think your quoted passage means "do different things all the time" so much as "don't assume that what you are doing will go on forever."
kahudd2000 (157 D)

I don't see a conflict in this either. I am saying they have a different emphasis.

On the other thread, I merely stated the Gita is a good counter-point to the Daoist texts. I did not mean a repudiation.

I'll just speak for myself here. The Gita helped open my eyes to the problem with an attachment to stillness.

I love the language of the 3-fold division of purity, passion, and darkness. Darkness here doesn't mean evil, per se, but neglect. Passion means the kind roller-coaster that most people run on as the default. And purity is to be encouraged. It is to act and not be concerned with the fruit of the action. The Gita reminds me to live in this moment, one that often has actions.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

I agree they have different emphases. I would say the Hindu texts emphasize the inner life of the soul, whereas the Taoist texts emphasize the connection on the person to all the events of Nature. Both agree with each other, but are mostly using two different ways of illustrating their point. Together they are a powerful worldview.

I think it more pantheistic than anything else.

Now granted there is an Avatar of the god Vishnu talking, but he in turn is an Avatar of the one supreme, which all is a part of.

New player looking for advice
As someone who's never played Diplomacy before, I don't really want to join a game that's already in progress, being unable to gauge its position. At the same time, if I start a game that I want to say is 'for noobs' then a bunch of people will join it and destroy everyone else. There also aren't any starting-up games which will accept me as a brand-new player. Which approach is better for getting started: picking up games in progress, or starting my own games?

Hoping for a love child from webDiplomacy and Backstabbr
I just started playing online for the first time since the Diplomacy Judge days, and have a couple games here and a couple games at Backstabbr. I love the features here, but the UI for Backstabbr is far nicer (in the sense that it's easier to tell what's happening on the board). Any chance the developers here would work on a cleaner UI inspired by Backstabbr? Do others agree that the webDiplomacy UI could be improved?
