Why do we have to wait on someone who can't retreat but only destrouy his unit?
The subject says it all. Just wondering if there is an explanation for it?

What makes someone "good" at gunboat?
Is it a specific set of skills? Good strategy? Communicating? What makes someone like SplitDiplomat better at gunboat than MadMarx?

Favorite openings for each country
I'm curious what all y'all like to play on the first move, and if there are any patterns in your preferences for each country. Post your favorite Spring 1901 move here!

@gold ... 50% odds are terrible as Italy. There is no reason for you to do anything in 1901 as Italy that won't basically end up in your favor 100% of the time. Besides, the consequence you face 100% of the time by attacking Austria is giving Turkey an easy path into either Russia or the Balkans, neither of which are favorable to you.

There is no need for complicated analysis. Don't attack Austria. You can always point out instances where it worked, but for every one of those, I can point out one where it didn't in my 500+ games here. 50/50 is awful for Italy.

If attacking Austria is a problem for Italy, Italy is not sending or receiving the right press.

Sure, there are games where it wouldn't work (for example, I suspect it would be bad if bo was Turkey), but if the winds are right, and are responded to in the right way, you can have a far greater success rate than 50%.
I think there's a big difference between attacking Austria in the early game, and attacking Austria in 1901. I've had success with both, and also with strong IA alliances, but the conventional wisdom that it pays for Italy and Austria not to fight each other in 1901 is probably right most of the time. You need a lot of confidence in Russia and/or Turkey for the 1901 attack to pay off as Italy, and that's often hard to come by in 1901.

ATC, by 1903, there has generally been enough movement to make it happen without worrying about Turkey, particularly when he and Austria have joined together against Russia. If Austria is dumb enough to leave you two centers, it might work too. These things won't happen in 1901 and typically not 1902. As such, those attacks rarely work unless other players are idiots and don't take advantage.

Diplomacy Simulators
The Classic Diplomacy maps have several simulators (Sandbox/Practice Modes) outside this site, such as Backstabbr or SourceForge. The other 4 variants on this site have no simulators that I could find, so does anyone know where some are? AncMed, Modern2, Empire4, World9

Does a player who left the game share in a draw?
I searched the rules and I didn't see anything. It says 'surviving' players. So if a player left, but still has SCs and units, is he a survivor?

Quick rules question
I'm a little unsure about how coasts affect support orders. Consider the following scenario: England has a fleet in Norway and a fleet in the Gulf of Bothnia. Even though the fleet in Gulf of Bothnia cannot move to StP's north coast, can it support Norway's move to StP's north coast?

Cops frequently lie in the course of their work to coerce 'confessions'...
And then we are expected to accept their testimony in court to vote guilty to convict someone and send them to prison. When should a career where lying is an integral part of the job disqualify someone's court testimony?

Broken promises
For people like Octavious who think that David Cameron and George Osbourne are the good-hearted saviours of the people, rather than, as I would suggest, a bunch of vicious, evil, self-serving bastards, here is something you should look at.

So I'm really busy and everything's going great..
So now I'm considering the option of delegating some work around the webdesign-stuff. I have no clue how this would work legally though, amongst other things..
