Feminism, Authoritarianism and Gender
I hesitate to post this, but i wonder where discussion will lead...
Is Gender socially constructed? Is there a difference between gender identity and gender expression? What other issues does this raise?

Why'd You Choose Your Username?
It's a decision we all make, and one we have to life with for the rest of our time on this site; choosing a username. Some choose their own name, their initials, a historical figure or even a reference to a movie or TV show. So I ask all of you, just why did you choose that username you have?

What means gunboat
I find some references to gunboat games, but nowhere in the help section a hint, what type of game is to be expected in a gunboat game.
Any hint?

Why hidden draw votes?
Can someone explain how hidden draw votes changes the game enough to make it a variant? It just doesn't seem all that interesting to me.

The a huge resurgence of F2F and that is more like F2F

It's closer to WT than a variant first off.

Second, it means you can actually lie about your draw vote and people aren't forced into situations where there is omniscience about their stance. The drawing can't be gamed nearly as much by turning it on/off right after a deadline because you don't know if you're in control of the outcome or not. Knowing when to click draw no longer becomes a game in itself based on constantly checking or knowing what time zones people are in.

It's closer to F2F.

It also prevents people using their draw vote to influence the game, which is a very powerful taxtic.

How do you vote draw in F2F? I was never able to get even close to an end game in F2F.

I guess I never used draw votes as a tactic. I only vote draw when I want to draw, and I withraw it only when I decide I don't want to draw. Stupid me, being honest :-)

Draws in F2F are secret ballet.

TD come along with a hat. Army for Aye. Navy for Nay. TD looks at the pieces in the hat and tells the boars if they keep playing or not.

In FTF, draw votes are often conducted with private ballots (usually with the help of the GM, and some sort of mechanism like dropping a fleet or army into a hat to signal yes or no), so that the players only learn whether or not the proposed vote failed or succeeded.
jbalcorn (429 D)

Gotcha. OK, makes sense, more in the spirit of the game, where you can use a draw vote to seed distrust among the other players :-)

The "Draw" button is also a powerful communications tool in gunboat games -- it can signal to other minor/mid powers that it is time to work together to try to force a draw on the player in the lead. A hidden "Draw" button means this must be communicated through moves/supports, which takes longer and can leave the first player to make the attempt quite vulnerable to engobblement.

Draws in FTF are not *always* secret ballot. I personally think secret ballot makes more sense in a tournament, but in a FTF house game, I think it's better to just vote openly.

Exactly what Ges said. I don't think it's as much for lying about a draw, as to disable ANY communication in a no-press game. I mean, I myself often used "draw" button when someone was heading for a solo to signal I am willing to work with other player to stop him. It's obvious use of the draw button, but it does actually make gunboat games not that gunboaty.

in all the many, many F2F games I have played over the years, no one ever did a secret ballot ... it was more of, is it 2AM, are we out of beer or too drunk to keep playing? And then dump the board ...
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Sure, as ATC said, it's usually tournaments that have secret ballot. However, because all games, for better or worse, count towards rankings, I think a lot of people have more of a tournament mentality when they play here.
Wait, in an F2F game, if draw voting is done secretly, then how do the players know when they've drawn? It seems to me that it just makes more sense to raise a "draw" flag. Do you have a draw vote every time someone asks for one?
I'm just trippin. I prefer to play with open draw, but it's cool if people want games with secret draw. It does provide a very different play experience.

In case you don't know; Ireland is having a marriage equality referendum today. Yes will mean marriage between gay couples becomes a reality, a No will deny them their fundamental human rights.

I've always enjoyed little concentrated nuggets of wisdom and any opportunity to expand my collection. What are some of your favorite quotes?

Does anyone know a software to simulate movements for the world map with 17 players? There are various for other variants, I suppose a mod with the world variant should be sufficient. Any info on that? Thank you :)
