Social Classes
Are social classes good? And I don't this turning to political discussion, I just want to know whether a concentration of wealth in a select few is good for society as a whole. Have we simply never seen social classes in an unabused system?

Thoughts on Modern Diplomacy II?
Hello, I'm returning to WebDipWorld after an absence of several years. I am interested to know what the community thinks of this Modern Dip II variant. Is it enjoyable? Fairly balanced? (I don't expect perfection from a variant . . . )

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

France and Germany are quick powerhouses, and the western front is more intense than ever. Russia is divided again, and we see Ukraine and Turkey appear as rivals of the Black Sea. Spain and Egypt have spectacular defensive positions, and Poland, though small, can turn the game on its head. Britain finally stands to its true glory as master of the seas, while Italy's conquests make it prime for coastal warfare.

The classic map extended, with an added bonus of build-anywhere, Modern II is a spectacular variant. No other Variant is as crowded, nor as intense.
KingCyrus (511 D)

I love Modern 2. It is the best variant in my opinion.

Germany is OP in my opinion.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

Germany is only as powerful as France, England and Poland let it be.
I always thought France would be very weak. Egypt is overpowered because the designers decided to abstract Iran out (as they explain in the design notes). Italy also enjoys fast growth potential because of the lack of a player in the Balkans.

It's not bad. I think Ancient Med is more balanced.
JamesYanik (548 D)

It is somewhat unbalanced, but France isn't that weak. Brittany being a territory and Bordeaux a SC makes England less inclined to fight him. Spain can be easily seduced with a one way war on the mediterranean, while Italy and Germany are not the most difficult opponents.

really fun game, was disappointed to have started spain, I know that that usually entails slow growth until england, egypt, or france decides to snuff you out. I never expected to go that far. great fun all n all

The "build in any open SC" sounds crazy. I'm looking forward to seeing that in action. Egypt builds in Iberia! The crowd goes wild!
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

Two things about "build in any open SC":
1) Sometimes it is worth vacating SCs near the front line (or bouncing yourself to defend an open SC) so you can build reinforcements there; and
2) Convoys are less valuable because you can just build armies across the seas.

It is neat that Ukraine and Poland have such high solo rates despite starting with 3 SCs and near some nasty opponents. France may have too many neighbors -- perhaps a design overreaction to the "Iberian reserve" in classic Dip?
I recently won a game with Poland here. Unfortunately the main cause was continuous mid game nmrs from my rivals. It was ppsc so there wasn't much point in drawing.

my new favorite is Spain. Playing England sucks.
Ukraine looks un-fun too
CommanderByron (801 D(S))

Ukraine sucks because Russia and Poland usually brutalize you. You can make it if you can get them fighting and take full control of the balkans and black sea.

I nearly won as Germany and would have if Spain didn't throw the solo to Ukraine because I took all of his centers. I stabbed five nations within five years which turns out is a bad strategy for getting people to like you.

I for one thing absolutely hate the two new variants. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay is awesome, but:
1. There is no place on earth by the name of Silecia
2. Why is Heartland blue, not brown like Germany?
3. The bigger version of maps are quite visibly different
What kind of monster implemented those variants? Joseph Stalin?!
yassem (2533 D)
04 Apr 15 UTC
Oh, and one more thing - I don't like the gunboat version of Modern (never played American Empire). Some countries just cannot survive without diplomacy or luck.
Tasnica (3366 D)

Yeah, the bigger version of the Modern Diplomacy map is definitely off. Just take a look at the Milan / Austria / Croatia / Venice area!

Yassem:

Says nothing about Silesia in Classic
yassem (2533 D)
06 Apr 15 UTC
What's wrong with Silesia in Classic? The shape? Well, I got used to diplomacy having really bad shapes and inaccurate naming, but "Silecia" is just a typo that should have been fixed ages ago.
yassem (2533 D)
08 Apr 15 UTC
I honestly am still waiting to hear what's wrong with Silesia (except for being one of the most fucked up places in real world, but what's wrong in Classic?)
JamesYanik (548 D)
08 Apr 15 UTC
yassem the bigger maps may look a bit different but the orders are 100% the same

and silesia was a province of the German empire

and it is an obnoxious territory for both Germany and Russia in classic but they need to suck it up because yes, some territories can hurt you

in modern it is no more unfair than alsace/ruhr/podolia/ANY OTHER TERRITORY
JamesYanik (548 D)
08 Apr 15 UTC
and who cares that heartland is blue not brown? that is PETTY

and Ukraine is not a bad country if you're a good DIPLOMAT
yassem (2533 D)
09 Apr 15 UTC
Yeah, but sucks, just as Poland does, in gunboat.
And Heartland being brown is not petty, it's order!

The Religious State
Having seen many opinions on this forum, I am wondering about the acceptability of a religious state. Should a state be able to be primarily Muslim, Jewish, or Christian (etc.)? Is this acceptable in the modern world? If so, how far can this theocracy of sorts go? May they make laws based upon the respective religion? How far reaching should these laws be?

Please discuss, and remain amicable.
