Does this game have to be cancelled?
Hi. I'm currently in this game in which we had 3 people get banned. There haven't been any moves made yet and it is still in spring 1901. So if we were able to fill the positions, 1 of which has been filled already, would we be allowed to continue? Here's a link to the game.

Texas was banned, and without a replacement it's going to be a very one-sided game.

The Favorite Author Tournament: The Round of 32
And here we go, into Round 2, with Shakespeare being out due to his losing again...because he's the master of tragedy, of course! ;) Will there be literary superstars? Yes! Will there be a glut of sci fi and fantasy writers? Yes! Will Thucy continue push a #ThoreauLaozi2016 platform (Change We Can Believe In...except change is just a natural process and you must learn to accept it like the good little Transcendentalist that you are!) YES! ;) 32 authors, 1 goal...whatever that is.

The Last Man in Europe...Or, Rather, China
http://news.yahoo.com/25-years-tiananmen-barely-known-china-youth-064659528.html That's honestly very depressing...It was 1989...but its treatment is not too far from "1984." And THIS is why I have such a hard time sympathizing with those shouting "Wake the Fuck Up," as if disagreement over America's future was the equivalent to being asleep at the wheel. Neither Bush nor Obama were the tyrants the Michael Moores and Glenn Becks call them out to be...THIS is The Party incarnate...

A Game Worth Playing
This thread will be won by the last person to post a gramatically correct, single-sentence post that has a strictly larger number of distinct words than any previous post on the thread.

I have an issue with this part of Ghug's sentence: "...under the New Moscow Harbour Bridge which is...." There needs to be a comma after "Bridge" because the relative adjective "which" begins a nonessential (in older grammar terminology "nonrestrictive") relative clause.
ghug (5068 D(B))

I think we've determined that that one is invalid. The currently leading post is "I like this."

I found a site that counts unique words (http://easycalculation.com/word-count.php).
Here is a list of all of the posts that have more distinct words than any previous post, and in parentheses is why they are (or are not) winning.

Page 1:
Mapu – 2 distinct words (eliminated by ghug)
Ghug – 3 distinct words (Winning!)
Yellowjacket – 5 distinct words (multiple sentences)
CA – 31 distinct words (misspelled grammatically)
Yellowjacket – 310 distinct words (needs 4 dots)
Abge – 312 distinct words (same as YJ)
CA- 314 distinct words (same as YJ)
Ghug – 315 distinct words (same as YJ)
Draug – 322 distinct words (same as YJ)
Ghug – 328 distinct words (multiple sentences)
Page 2:
Ghug – 576 distinct words (multiple sentences)
Bo – 1884 distinct words (T-Rex are infinitely more brainless)
CA – 1885 distinct words (Same as Bo)
Page 3:
Jamie – 1887 distinct words (Same as Bo)
CA – 1889 distinct words (Same as Bo)
Jamie – 3360 distinct words (missing spaces after commas)
Page 4:
CA – 3361 distinct words (same as Jamie)
Page 5:
Ghug – 3438 distinct words (“ inside of ‘)
Draug – 3442 distinct words (same as Ghug)
Ghug – 3597 distinct words (multiple sentences)

Knowing that I am going to lose this contest makes me hesitant to even try to write a long sentence that will surely be shorter than many, but I wonder if the others will actually be grammatically correct, or will prove to be "run on" sentences, which we should be sure to remove from the contest, because I feel strongly that such submissions are not sentences at all, and I hope that others will be supportive in combating "run on" sentences that are known to not only be in direct opposition to everything your English teacher taught, but are also futile attempts at immortalizing one's authorship at the expense of the reader, who is "oh, so important" in a contest whose main goal is to decide which person has longest single sentence dissertation, yet fails to truly engage the reader in a truly eloquent fashion worthy of praise and awards that we all know are meaningless in a contest such as this, so I challenge the writers who follow to not only write the longest sentence, but also to write something that is truly meaningful to this forum and the reader, for I fear that some "wanna be" coder is going to find a way to use a script to create sentence, rather than take the time to actually write a sentence with their own wit and creativity, which would win the contest, yet prove to be a sour grape in an otherwise enjoyable contest that engages members to spend more time on this forum performing a task that neither furthers the dream of a peaceful and prosperous humanity, nor helps someone learn something that is truly beneficial to their life or family, but hopefully at least brings about a sense of release from the stresses of life by helping the writer and the reader think about something that really and truly means absolutely, positively nothing, except who has the longest rant or rave, which, I fear, may in the end be posted months from now, because that is how long it took to write a sentence that not only filled the maximum length allowed by this forum software, but also filled the maximum space available on the hard drive where this forum's database resides.
Alas, death by failure to proofread. What would my students say?

I know. I just thought it fit the thread.

Squigs lists " inside of ' as an error. However, I'm 90% sure that that's a matter of stylistic preference, though there may be an official protocol in certain situations, like, for example, legal documents. A quick google search returns several results confirming this.

I think this means that Draugnar is winning, unless there are other problems (which there probably are).
Fishstudios (245 D)
31 May 14 UTC
Actually, never mind; I went back and read the post, and it actually has " inside of ", which is more likely to be wrong, because I think that regardless of whether you start with " or ', you're supposed to alternate from then on.
Squigs44 (273 D)

Yeah, that is what I meant, my bad.

@semck ...

"Ghug – 3 distinct words (Winning!)"

Is that really the coherent, grammatically correct sentence with the most distinct words in this thread so far?
ghug (5068 D(B))
01 Jun 14 UTC
It has to have more distinct words than any post before it, not just valid ones.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
01 Jun 14 UTC
Is that to say that no one has done that other than your three word post?
ghug (5068 D(B))

Correct.

And because of that I have absolutely no respect for him at all because there are so many more things he could have done in those moments of his life other than count up the distinct words in a post but noooooo.

You're in high school. You should appreciate the ability to waste time on such pointlessness, not condemn it.
Fasces349 (0 DX)

Even though the current winner has 3 words, you need 3598 distinct words to take over.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
01 Jun 14 UTC
I waste my time watching reruns and listening to the same songs I've listened to for years on repeat. At least that's worth something. I don't know what, but it's worth something.

Is 3598 possible?
Squigs44 (273 D)
01 Jun 14 UTC
Actually, I did not count up all the words, I put them into a distinct word counting website. So it took me maybe 15 minutes. That is far less time wasted than those that created the 1000+ distinct word posts. If I wanted to waste time, I would join the mafia game.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
01 Jun 14 UTC
I just googled "longest sentence" and copied and pasted.
Fishstudios (245 D)
01 Jun 14 UTC
3598 is certainly possible, seeing as there are well over 100,000 words in the English language, and the rules do not exclude the possibility of just listing them all, as long as it's done in a grammatically acceptably manner. Of course, doing that by hand would be a colossal waste of time, but getting some sort of program to do it for you has already been suggested, and wouldn't be difficult at all. However, that does feel a bit like cheating. Then again, so does making really long posts that aren't valid entries, just to make things difficult for everyone else, which people here seem to have no qualms about.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

Congratulations, ghug.

Lil' bit of French
I want to know how to say this in French:
"(I would like to reserve the spot) in the period from 16 July to 6 August."
That might not even be a proper English sentence, but you probably get what I mean. I just need to make clear in which period, and I don't know how.
Monday morning I'm handing in a letter in which I need that sentence, so there's no rush.
