Rival/hatred game variant
I'd like to play a game mode where each player is secretly given a unique rival (so no two players share a rival), and the only players counted at the end of the draw are those who have both survived and eliminated their rival. A solo doesn't need to eliminate their rival and rivals aren't necessarily symmetrical.

Unknown Player in Anonymous Private Game
I'm completely new to Diplomacy and this website. I made a private game and explained to my friends how to join my private match. Though only 2 people say they've joined, I have 3 anonymous players other than myself registered. Is it possible one of them joined twice? I know by the time stamps that it was one of the first two players who joined the game, the times are only a minute apart, and I am wondering if the small time frame is just a player joining twice.

Hello Councilors and welcome to the HMS Banton , I am your Captain and the Royal envoy to your council, my crew calls me “Pickle Rick” for my affinity for pickles but you can call me Captain Rick. I have been a sailor for many years; and have fought many a battle in the name of the king. I view this expedition as my last Hoorah and a chance to further my legacy. I will do my best to help this council and will be your point of contact for the duration of the adventure. Me and my crew of 100 will be be staying with you when we land. (##GM for non-storyline questions / ##CaptainRick for storyline questions.) Here is a summary of some vital information *Hands each councilor an envelope*

**Envelope Message**

Aye, you are ready for an adventure I take it, you have your motives I am sure, but understand that the survival of this colony is your primary concern. Below I have included an exhaustive explanation of the way we will organize and some background for you all.

#Background#

Webdipia- Our home country, an island nation of dense forests and rolling hills (Think IRL England), The people are gritty and strong. Resilience has been our history, our present and our future.

V’dipia- Where we are heading. A recently discovered land full of mystery and intrigue but also treasure.

Playdipia- Our deepest rival and the heathens who have cast a shadow on our empire abroad. (Think IRL France/Spain)

The King, his lord and majesty, conqueror of the congo and ruler of all he sees , Sir Byron of the people.

The Brotherhood- A deeply troubled group of vandals and criminals hell bent on replacing King Byron with a democracy.

#Personal Effects#
Each council may bring 2 personal effects. These must be approved by CaptainRick through PM. (Use your imagination, think of your win conditions, and character)
It will be the councilors choice if they share what they brought, otherwise its secret.

#Resources#

These are the material items that are used to trade and for building. Below I will list the resources and how they are found in order of value from highest to lowest. The current exchange rate is 2->1 from bottom to top.

Gold (G)- Mined or bartered for
Silver (S)- Mined or bartered for
Iron (I) - Mined or bartered for
Stone (ST)- Mined or bartered for
Wood (W)- Felled or bartered for
Food (F)- Farmed, Hunted, Gathered or bartered for

#Metrics#

These are how your colony is graded phase to phase all your metrics start at a base of 7; if they reach 0 or 15 then various positive and negative outcomes can occur.

Support of Crown- Does the king support you? 0->15
Corruption- Is your colony viewed as corrupt by the people? 15->0
Education- How educated is your colony? 0->15
Health- How healthy is your colony? 0->15
Morale- How happy are your people? 0->15
Attack- Your strength during offensive attacks 0->15
Defense- Your strength against attacks 0->15

There are a multitude of ways you can affect these metrics both individually through your actions and collectively through policy.

#Actions#

Each player may commit to 1 action per phase excluding their character powers.
Example: John is a Carpenter and can build 1 building per phase, he can also perform an action while building. This could include “Punch captain rick in the face” or it can be as simple as “Go for a stroll” actions will incur either penalty or reward so be careful what you do. ALL actions are processed at phase end with results being presented to be handled in the following phase.

#Tech and Research#
Please open the tech tree and research tree documents HERE: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1njPqXSUJdW-UQts1IpKb2-jR-ZsfPYQTim0TdvDA2l4/edit?usp=sharing

In this you will see the current tech and research available to your council. Levels correspond to phases needed to research. Thus a Level 1 tech will take 1 phase and Level 4 tech will take 4 phases. You may research one of each (research and tech) per phase and have in your queue up to 5 at any given time. When your a charcter rushes a tech he completes 1 phase of the research on that tech; not necessarily completing it. You must follow the highlighted paths in order to unlock; as an example you must research Natural Med 1 before you research Natural Med 2.

When voting for tech and research the queue will add them in order of proposal unless otherwise stated in the proposal.
#Buildings#
Buildings have some value whether it be tangible or symbolic. They cost resources to build and you can build as many as you can afford per phase.

#Resupplies#
Every even numbered phase starting in phase 4 a resupply will arrive. This resupply will have on it some requests you made in the phase prior and some other items and personnel supplied by the King. This means that every odd phase you will need to decide on a request list of things equivalent to your support of the king.

#Taxes#
The King is suspending taxation on your colony until Phase 6 when the second resupply arrives, after that your colony will need to produce 1 Gold per 2 citizens per phase or the equivalent value in Silver or Iron. Whenever you fail to pay the taxes your Support of the Crown will decrease by 1, and you will receive less items on your resupply.

#Consumption#
Currently colonists are paid with their 1 food per phase ration. This is also the minimum needed to survive. Excess food is considered rotten at the end of a phase.

**End Message**

*You and the other councilors arrive in Captain Rick’s quarters, he begins to speak*

Councilors, we have a lot to work on before we can depart; first allow me to inform you of what resources our king has graciously given us.
Gold- 1000
Silver- 900
Iron- 200
Stone- 0
Wood - 100
Food- 500

These resources can be traded in the Markets before we leave, or kept for use later. As Captain I highly recommend you stow away 300 food for our population when we land.

The king has also granted you permanent use of the HMS Banton, a transport ship that will carry all 200 colonists and my 100 man crew who will become colonists upon arrival. (currently all male and unmarried) As well as temporary charter of the Merchant ship “The Cornelia Celeste” , which will transport all of our materials. It has a carrying capacity of 3000 units (units are a measure of space).

First order of business is to decide what you wish to buy from the market; for simplicity I have written our options here:

-30 Slaves from Playdipia: 300 Silver, 150 units (Slaves are half cost to feed and
tradeable)
-10 Mercenaries: 100 Gold per phase, 100 units (DEF +2 ; Mercenaries can
deny renewal of contract)
-1 Frigate: 800 Gold , 800 Silver (Frigate will be manned by 50 of the King’s sailors, and will protect the ships on journey to the New World, and after landing will stay to protect the colony.)
-Farming Kit: 200 Gold, 500 units (Allows a farm to be built immediately with no investment)
-Mining Kit: 400 Gold, 500 units (Allows a mine to be built immediately once a location is found, with no investment.)
-Fishing Kit: 100 Gold, 300 units (Allows double productivity from fishing after landing for 2 phases)
-Fortification Kit: 700 Gold, 800 units (Allows construction of wooden walls immediately upon landing for half the cost)
-10 Prostitutes: 300 Silver ,150 units (Corruption +2 , Morale +2)
-Oriental Spices: 100 Silver, 100 units (Tradeable)
-Wool : 100 Silver , 500 units(Tradeable)
-10 Man row-boat: 200 silver, 300 units (Tradeable, can traverse rivers)
-1 canon: 100 gold , 100 units(Tradeable)

After that the council will have to draft a charter that will serve as the base of your councils leadership structure (I need you to have a person either a leader or a powerless person responsible to send me final proposals and vote counts; suggest an active person.) Further, this charter must decide on a name for your colony; you may choose:
-Byronia (+1 support of crown)
-New Webdipia (+1 Morale)
-Custome Name (No benefit)

Third, your council must select your accompanying specialists; I have taken the liberty to gather some and also vet any applications. Here is the short list: (Maximum 3)

- Admiral Philippe Augusta [+2 DEF, +1 ATK, +1 Support from King] ; Admiral Augusta served alongside King Byron during the 50 years war, it was in this time the Admiral , then a Captain, became good friends with the King. His loyalty to the crown is unwavering; however he has been known to lash out violently against subordinates.

- Lieutenant Nathaniel Webster [+1 DEF, +1 ATK] ; Lieutenant Webster graduated from the King’s Military College top of his class, last month. He is fairly liberal and open to progressive ideas, but is not battle-tested.

- Doctor Gregory Haliburton [+2 Health, -1 Morale] ; Doctor Haliburton is a revolutionary doctor who cured multiple maladies, and even set the foot of the King after a hunting accident. However, the good doctor has a gambling habit that hit national headlines and led to his disavowment by the crown.

- Professor Emery Steward [+1 Health, +1 Education, -1 Support from King] ; Professor Steward is a learning fellow at the King’s College of the Sciences; he has studied plants from the New World brought back on exploratory expeditions and has an extensive knowledge of remedies for common ailments. The Professor however, is a strong believer in the merits of democracy and despises the king.

-Father Abba [ +1 Morale , +1 Education, -1 Corruption] ; Father Julian is a minister of the Church of Webdipia. Thusly, he believes in Webdipian gospel.

- Sir Walter Scott [ +1 Morale, +1 Corruption] ; Sir Scott is a merchant who has traveled the world trading in the King’s name. However, with his extensive contacts comes his high maintenance life-style and Alcoholism.

- Nain Rouge [1000 Silver] ; I wish to become a specialist. I was once a wise and powerful warlock; but now I am weak and wish to travel the world.

-Sister Julia Townsend [+1 Morale, -1 Corruption] ; A progressive of the webdipian faith Sister Abby Townsend is world renowned for her scathing book about the inadequacies of the webdipian faith in handling women’s issues.

-Senator Marcellus George [+1 Corruption, +1 Support of King] This former senator is a strong supporter of the crown and believes in the rule of law. He was recently pardoned by the king on charges of laundering gold from a children’s hospital in the capital.

-Patrick Killian [Mines with his oversight produce 50% more / buildings with his oversight cost 50% less] Mr.Killian has been a foreman for many years, his experience and grit will serve you well. However, he wishes to bring his son and requires a salary of 10 Silver per phase.

If you have any questions feel free to ask me now

Hello Councillors. I am your Botanist Heath Edward. I think looking at the above each of us should try to tackle a task. Id like to work with our merchant on this but I have many thoughts. We dont need wood, we can produce that when we arrive. We dont need cannons yet. We should add the miner! We should add Sister Julia she sounds very progressive.

But as my official offering to get us focused early while here:

Proposal 1.0 :
¤Spend 100 Silver to buy wool
¤Spend 100 Silver to buy Spices
¤Spend 400 Gold to buy mining kit
¤Hire Patrick Killian and allow him to bring his son. Agree to pay him 10 silver per phase or better based on quality of work.

This will be the first Webdipian expedition to V'dipia. So our information is second hand. We have been told its a heavily forested land with low rolling hills along the coast and mountains on the interior. The climate is similar to ours here in Webdipia, however not precise. Some sailors have told of extreme storms that wipe away ships in seconds and flood the coast for miles inland. Based on our allies interactions with natives farming is viable in certain places. Our native, bo_sox, is specifically from a tribe several hundred miles south of where we plan to land. So while he won't know anyone personally having him should give us some weight with the natives where we land.

None of the specialists are here right now. However, i can answer most questions. The Nain Rouge was a paper applicant, his skin was red as amber and his teeth were a glossy yellow. Greetings fellow councilors, I am the colonel assigned to this trip. My name is Isaac Cumberledge and I look forward to meeting all of you. I intend to throw out some recommendations at first and not propose anything just yet. I would recommend that we immediately stow 300 food away for arrival and sell 50 of our wood to get 100 food so we have 300 for the trip. I recommend that we purchase at least one of the following: Farming Kit, Mining Kit, 10 Man row boat. I also suggest that we bring an amount of wool, spices, and slaves; I would also advise keeping some of our gold/silver/iron on hand so that we can focus on colony growth and be able to pay our taxes when they come due. More recommendations to come, I look forward to hearing all of your suggestions.

You do not have to feed anyone next phase as it will be a travel phase. This answers your question about travel time (1 phase) and that you actually don;t have responsibility to feed the colonists and crew. I already planned for that and stocked separate from your stocks.
RagingIke297 (142 D)
15 Sep 17 UTC
Thank you Capt Rick, I amend my early statement then and suggest we sell 200 food for whatever we deem necessary. The area seems like it will be flush with wood, but taking a little with us won't hurt so as we don't deplete the nearby forests as quickly

The slaves may be a huge liability. They are playdippian.

Colonel Isaac, we should not risk adding these men as slaves. There may be opportunites to aqcuire slaves through conquest at another point. Also saturation of additional mouths to feed may deplete our food early before adequately prepared.

We can EASILY make that taxation quota by limiting our spending here. Also I think 5 food is a great number to start we are safe. Food spoils anyway so we will want to focus on farming and fishing both when we arrive. I have seeds that can help us make apple orchards and we will have spices, garlic, and other plants we may find there.

We should hire the merceneries instead. And use our soldiers as work force. The merceneries may enjoy our colony if we treat them well. Id like to buy the mercs as extra muscle anyway
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
15 Sep 17 UTC
Hello all.

We should solidify our own necessities for survival before we worry much about defense. Likewise, slaves are an absolute non-necessity. We have to make it through the short-term right now. Let's get food supplies set up. We should also work quickly to begin mining as it is highly likely that we will need more gold and silver, plus our iron and stone are going to be huge resources for construction and defense going forward, as too is wood. We need to stabilize these resources and continue to get our hands on as much gold and silver as we can and ensure that we can survive here for a long time on our own before we start worrying about hypotheticals such as an attack.

Some things I noticed out of our possible purchase choices:

* Mercenaries and slaves are, in a relative sense, cheap. That does NOT mean that we need them yet.
* Frigates will be massively useful in ensuring that our resources arrive safely, and those 50 men will act like five orders of mercenaries when they arrive. All we have to do for them is feed them. We should elect to use frigates over mercenaries when at all possible, and thus, we need to keep collecting gold and silver.
* Farming is a fantastic immediate investment. I am happy to lead that project given my prior knowledge and experience in this region. Particularly, the inland floods make for poor settlement along the coast but for fantastic farmland, so long as we are careful in locating the best possible places. I am also happy to assist in starting a Mine so that we can stock up on all of our necessities.
* Fishing is valuable and cheap, but the extra productivity won’t help us right now as food goes bad quickly. We should wait to do that until we have a larger population.
* Fortification is not yet a necessity. It will be costly, though, so we should prepare for it by mining gold.
* Prostitutes are a fantastic investment in keeping morale high, but not necessary yet.
* A 10-man rowboat will be a luxury, not a necessity, but one we should prioritize at first chance. Who knows how much that could expand our reaches out there?

As far as our charter goes, we should mandate a strong, semi-permanent leader. Obviously, in the face of corruption, this leader should be removable, but we should be able to put our faith in them. I am happy to offer myself for that position or take a right-hand man role to our strong leader that is, of course, still a subject of the King and the Captain.

Early on, morale is more important than support of the King. We have been offered six phases to build up and establish ourselves, and morale will get us there. We can offer our undying support to the King again in any way possible once we have made certain our own survival. Thus, we should be called New webDipia (##GM - repeat after me: webDip. webDip. webDip. No Webdip. webDip. Come on, man.).

As for our specialists, I am only offering one specific suggestion at this time, but I feel it necessary to offer a few cautionary pieces of advice beforehand:

* Our specialists, unlike our early investments, *must* be long-term choices. Establishing ourselves is going to require equal contribution from everyone. Sustaining a functional and successful colony requires strong, capable leadership and integrity. This is what our specialists can best assist in.
* Corruption may not hurt us know, but it will be our downfall later. Corrupt individuals must be left off of this mission. We must be good men to begin with, and shortly thereafter a good colony of good men, women, and children.
* Education is critical for a successful colony. We can and should make a minor investment in that through our specialists.

As for my specific suggestion, I believe that Lieutenant Webster is a fine choice. Experience under the King is important on the mainland but we do not know what we are going to encounter. An open-minded, youthful, and exuberant strategist is exactly what we need. And, please, rather than being scared off by those traits, I remind you that he graduated at the top of his class in the King’s own military school and quite obviously has full support of the King. We will be losing out on a good asset if we do not bring him along and allow him to work with us.

As such, I offer the following:

Proposal 1.2:
* Spend 200 gold to purchase a Farming Kit.
* Spend 400 gold to purchase a Mining Kit.
* Spend 100 silver on Wool (if not done via Proposal 1.0).
* Hire Lieutenant Webster.
* Establish our new land as New webDipia.

I also vote no to Proposal 1.1. Nain Rouge is a poor investment in both the short term and the long term. Locating and establishing a mine would be an equally effective short term investment and a far better long term investment. Hiring Nain Rouge is lazy and I am disappointed in our Botanist for suggesting it.
RagingIke297 (142 D)

I'm not really a religious man. I'm a sailor. I believe in god and I'm pretty superstitious but sometimes I find the church to be a bit... suffocating. Father Abba is an old school believer very conservative. Sister Townsend is very progressive. As sister townsends description says she has made ground breaking work in regards to women's rights. Take from that what you must; but I'm not thrilled to see an over zealous women putting men "in their place" of course Im not here to make decisions just pilot a ship.

**GM**
A councilor has requested i answer a question about damage and attacking eachother.
-Yes you can attack each other- your ATK and HP is what i use to calculate that. There will be opportunities to increase both. (You all have private ATK and HP sent with your win conditions) so you don't really know how much damage someone can take or how much they can deal. The colonel learns a players ATK if he trains them to increase it. The medic learns a players HP if he heals them.
The math is simple: At time of attack I calculate HP of defender - ATK of attacker. If the math equals a negative or a 0 then the defender dies. If the math equals any positive integer than the attacker leaves -1HP.

Example:
Player A has an ATK of 2 and a HP of 5
Player B has an ATK of 3 and a HP of 3

Player A attacks player B

(Player B's HP) - (Player A's ATK) = 1
Since the integer is positive Player A incurs -1HP
End result=
Player A- ATK 2 HP 4
Player B- ATK 3 HP 1

If a player is armed when they attack example:
Player A- ATK 2 HP 5 + ATK +1 for use of sword
Player B- ATK 3 HP 3

following the same math Player A with an ATK of 3 would bring Player B's HP to 0 causing the death of Player B and incurring no damage to Player A.

Now players can have hidden buffs that change these outcomes as an example a player may stumble upon a buff to once per game use death throws in combat. In this instance if their HP reaches 0 they deal full ATK to their opponent. It is best not to kill each other but if you find it nessecary it isn't easy and you will probably incur significant penalty within the colony.

Now if the colony is attacked you have 2 metrics that determine results.
ATK and DEF

ATK determines how much damage you do offensively.
DEF determines how much damage you buff before incurring structure loss.

Example: You have built a wall and your DEF is 3
a faction attacks with an ATK of 5; your walls are destroyed and 2 random structures will also be destroyed.

Same example but with ATK of 1 and your walls are damaged.

It's simple. You won't always know an enemies ATK or DEF so war isn't something you want to dive into.

I am keeping combat simple for you all to focus on your characters and on resource management. Mainly I am looking for you to play your parts (thus the added win conditions from prior games to give you counter motives to increase the disagreements over issues) from there the world will happen around you and you will be able to influence it; but not as much as it influences you.

[Suggestion] Alternate winning conditions
vDiplomacy has a way to set up "alternate winning conditions", e.g. to customize how many turns are played and/or how many SCs need to be conquered before a winner is declared. For example, we can have a game of Classic running for 14 turns (Fall 1907).

FFS WHY?
Why does online Diplomacy give me Germany to start with in every single game I sign up for?
Seriously, does it use region-based IP-checking? Because I'd really like to try out different countries and strategies.
And no, taking over Leavers doesn't count because you always get a losing position way past the point of getting a proper strategy rolled out (that's why the original player threw the game)

1v1 Showdown - An Update
110 players entered. After 8 months, 11 are still fighting for the title, and of those 11, just 2 remain undefeated.

That number is about to become 1.
