Low Reliability Rating to join games
This is just a "what if scenario based question." If there are diplomacy players that have a reliability rating (R.R) that is extremely low, like below 10%... Is it still technically possible to join games even if all diplomacy site games have an R.R that is above a player's R.R?

In theory would that mean that the player would not be able to join Diplomacy games on this site?

procedure for getting a sub?
Hi all,
I'm going to need to get a sub to cover for me while I am on a vacation. The person I was thinking of is another member of this site. I am wondering if there is any procedure I should go through with the mods or something to make sure I don't get my sub in trouble for cheating.

WW1 reenactment?
Would anybody be down for a game where the Central Powers fight the Triple Entente? Italy would be a free agent in this case.

Rules would be that there can only be press between allies, and Italy can talk to everyone.
Allies cannot capture one another's centers, nor occupy them. Bouncing can be orchestrated if there is no possibility of taking an ally's center.

What Metagaming Is Acceptable?
Saw another thread on this come up, and go down again before it really came to a complete answer. Where is the line drawn?

Let's say I know a player who's a little stab-happy, and I find myself in a game with them. Is it wrong to give him a taste of his own medicine based off that, or should the knowledge not influence me to that degree?

As another example, you could be a very uninspired player who simply allies with Russia every time you play Turkey, and that wouldn't violate the rule about preset alliances. But joining a game as Turkey intending to ally with Russ Ian (who happens to be playing Russia) would violate that rule, even if you only did it once.
Hathkin (100 D)

So, I want to put out some examples out to see if they break letter and/or spirit of the law so I can get an idea of the boundaries for this.

1) After looking at Germany's history, you post a global message "Germany's a Solo artist we need to stop them early on."

2) You post globally “I played with France a few times before and they are a bit stabby.” This could not be necessary true.

3) Same text as number 2 but privately to another player.

4) You post to another player “You should trust me because of that great draw we got last month.”
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))

All inappropriate. Although you can do the same thing with less specifics and be appropriate.
Hathkin (100 D)
07 Apr 17 UTC
Thanks I thought the last one would be OK, but less specifics it is.
slypups (1889 D)
07 Apr 17 UTC
Really @Gen._Lee? All inappropriate? I'd like to hear from a mod on this one.

All four of those sound like comments based on a player's tendencies in past games (or lies about those tendencies), not entering a game with a preconceived strategy to ally with or attack a particular player. Take #1 for example - if you entered the game with intent to take out the German player, such a comment would definitely be wrong. But if you entered the game with no intent, drew Russia or France and wanted to attack Germany because that's your strategy, what's wrong with saying #1 to try to get others to join you in an attack on Germany?
Shenguin (281 D)
07 Apr 17 UTC
Surely 1) 2) and 3) are within the rules if they are lies?
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))

I'm no mod just posted my opinion. Why not just sell that you feel Germany is a really good manipulative player to others instead of point to their record or past games? Maybe it doesn't break the rules, but seems to break the spirit of it.

Same for 2, plant seeds about inconsistencies in their press or lie about what they've told you. There are other ways to acheive the same thing that are not as lame.

I don't see that line of reasoning working very well anyways except in the most noob filled game.

I guess you are assuming it's a non anon game?
captainmeme (1632 DMod)
08 Apr 17 UTC
1,2,3 and 4 are all allowed by the rules (in non-anon games, anyway), but be aware that a large portion of the community frowns upon it, and by bringing it up, you may at best be making enemies, and at worst be giving those enemies a tool to use against you ("You don't want to ally with him, he's the kind of player who searches your game history for the one time you stabbed someone and then uses that against you").
Hathkin (100 D)

I was only considering using 4, but I see the points about none of them being very subtle and the risk to your reputation.

I sent the mods an email asking them to clarify a specific issue involving meta gaming in a game I was in until recently that they refused to cancel, pause, or remove any player in. For context I was accused of metagaming but this isn't the main subject of this post.

"I want answers to my questions as this impacts the integrity of the game.

I want to know how you're going to prevent [player 1] from unnecessarily attacking [player 2] without influencing him to attack someone else (aka me)

I want to know why muting someone right off the bat and attacking them doesn't constitute important enough meta gaming charges, yet whatever the fuck I did is apparently worth pausing the game for.

I want to know why [player 3] can get away with accusing me of meta 5 in game years after the issue

Please answer my questions instead of rudely dismissing them and maybe I won't quit your website."

I was essentially told that even though they didn't foresee any changes to the game they couldn't answer my questions. I just find it kind of weird for the mods to let the game proceed without being able to answer my questions. I was told the investigation was still ongoing. I understand mods have more context but if there's still doubt the game should be paused right? At least it seems unfair to me that my questions couldn't be answered and I was expected to continue in the game. I'm leaving this here with names blocked because I think it'll contribute to the discussion of what is meta and what isn't.

Question to community: Is it really fair to mute and target someone for out of game reasons? And if not should the person be removed from the game?
Claesar (4665 D)
08 Apr 17 UTC
@DO: I haven't read the whole text of your post, so don't consider this as my opinion on the situation you sketch. Escpecially since I haaven't read the other side of the story either.

I can answer your questions though.
Q: "Is it really fair to mute and target someone for out of game reasons?"
A: No, this is not allowed, as described in the rules.

Q: "And if not should the person be removed from the game?"
A: That's up to the mods to decide. Just like in real life, the judge decides the sentence even if the culprit is guilty.

Yeeeeeah, I don't think you're actually revisiting the complaint that got the last thread muted as a way to "contribute to the discussion of what is meta and what isn't."

I *do* think you'll have a hell of a time establishing intent for player 1 or the facial invalidity of player 3's accusation, with or without mod-level access to chat logs.

I also think your demand that the mods intervene to prevent player 1 from attacking player 2, you, or (apparently) anyone else is nonsensical. Either there was metagaming and the game is DOA, or there was no metagaming and the game should proceed; there is no middle ground where it was *kind of* metagaming and therefore player 1 should be forced to play in a way that benefits player 2 and/or you. Getting the mods to fix the game for you is not an antidote to perceived metagaming, it's just another power play.

And I highly doubt the mods give a shit about your threat to quit the site over this clown fiesta.
Claesar (4665 D)

I disagree on that last part, I think the mods are sorry to see her go. But that doesn't mean they'll let that influence their decision (and they shouldn't).

I don't really know your particular story nor can we really discuss it in specifics since it sounds like despite you being out of it it's still an ongoing game, but i will comment on my views regarding the process of it all.

The easy answer is that yes, anybody doing anything for reasons out of the game is meta. But something like that is often not the easiest to prove and even quite often theres an "in-game" true motive that sometimes gets improperly assessed as somebody doing things as cheating simply because it seems irrational. Those investigations are intentionally done 'behind the scenes' because doing something publicly such as outright pausing of games could easily have implications on the game and specifically the accused, which wouldn't be fair should they turn out to be an unsubstantiated concern. It's better to figure it out, regardless of if more damage gets done as a result of the lag, and then punting the player or cancelling the game or making it unranked or whatever the appropriate ruling turns out to be.

Speaking from personal experience i've had more then a few accusations of cheating towards me simply because i from time-to-time can manage to convince a naive player from doing unbelievably irrational things or other times myself and my allies put on an out-of-the-box charade towards something or other that some players can only muster to deduce that it could only possibly be foul play. I've likewise had similar thoughts regarding other players and requested investigations that turned out to be empty skepticism on my part.

I'm quite sure mods get it wrong from time to time and make wrong calls, but still worth having some understanding that there is some delicacy in how these matters get handled during active games without inadvertently giving away clues as to what's really going on or unfairly having an influence over the game.
Durga (3609 D)
08 Apr 17 UTC
I mean, on the topic of not influencing I would have preferred the mods to say "there is no metagaming happening the investigation is closed we can explain after the game is done" to "ongoing but we're gonna let the game continue" sounds weird.

On why I'm leaving, moreso because I realized getting angry over this is ridiculous and I need to take a serious step back (and I will once all replacements have been found).

Lethologica clearly didn't understand my post.

It only just seems weird to me that in a non-anon game where you see who's already in, you join a game with someone you immensely dislike and have muted. And then you continue to have them muted. I don't know, even if it isn't worth penalizing someone for I feel like a player should be replaced here. Those are my thoughts.
Durga (3609 D)
08 Apr 17 UTC
Like, I just want to clarify that while I'm not a fan of whatever particular mod was messaging me for the most part - on the whole the team is fine, if not maybe a bit socially inept in terms of dealing with players but I shouldn't really expect people opting to help run a diplomacy site to be. I'm appreciative of the work they do to catch cheaters and running the site, as I'm sure it's a lot of mundane work. I'm not quitting because of them lol
VillageIdiot (7813 D)
08 Apr 17 UTC
I think somebody not talking to you in a game because of personal history, while douchey and annoying, probably isn't going to be enough to be actionable. These are just the human nature things we all need to try to navigate in these things. It's not that uncommon that there's at least one player in a game that's going to be a complete write off of somebody you can work with so you just need to identify it as quick as possible work with what you do have. That or stick to anonymous games.

That said, absolutely if it's more stress the fun then stepping back or completely stepping away is for sure the right call.
