What are the good things about other sites?
With the ODC, we have a lot of players playing at PlayDiplomacy. And, I'm sure many of our membership play on other sites as well as webdip.

What are the features you really like from those sites that you wish webdiplomacy had?

So many armed groups exist in Syria. Is it too risky for America to get involved?

Meat-Gamey
Can someone explain to me what this is because I don't understand it. Is not wanting to eat meat because you've had bad experiences with its flavour in other time periods a reason to be investigated by the FDA? If so, aren't all meats fucked?

How Does the Website Assign Nations to Players?
It seems like when I join a number of games at nearly the same time, I get the same country if I'm playing the same variant. Is this because the game assign your country by when you join if noone else has that country, or is it simple coincidence? Thanks!

Block player feature
I was wondering about a "block player feature" so that people can avoid particularly unpleasant players. Should you block a player, you can't join a game with them in it and they can't join with you in it. I'd imagine that'd last for that game as long as the player is in it to prevent fishing for identities

Can someone explain to me what this is because I don't understand it. Is not wanting to ally with a player because you've had bad experiences with their stability in other games a reason to be investigated for meta? If so, aren't all non-anon games fucked?

Newbie question about phases
I'm just learning about this game, but it sounds great. I'm trying to set up a game with some friends, but I'm not sure about all of the settings. If I set the phase length to one day, does that mean we have a day for diplomacy before all the moves occur, then another day to set retreats, and another day for build, so that there could be three days between attacks?

Calhamer Estate Sale

I got an email from Douglas Kent of Diplomacy World fame, so I thought I’d spread the word on various forums. Mr. Calhamer’s estate is being liquidated. Among the items being sold on ebay is a first edition of Diplomacy, marked 1 of 500. In other words, Alan Calhamer’s PERSONAL copy, which also just so happens to be the FIRST COPY of Diplomacy published. EVER.

I am not particularly into collecting things, but for this I may make an exception. If I had to explain it to a non-Dipper, I’d say this was the equivalent, for an American, of being able to purchase Thomas Jefferson’s personal copy of the Declaration of Independence, signed by all of the Founding Fathers.

I may put a bid down on it.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

If you're new to eBay, bidding before like 3 seconds left in an auction is basically just driving the price up. Don't bid now, I promise you 100% that you won't win with that bid. You just make it more expensive for whoever does.
Matticus13 (2844 D)
29 Mar 17 UTC
Well, it wasn't going to be available at the garage sale anyway... If it's at $207 already with 5 days left, it was going to go for quite a bit regardless.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Add yourself to the watch list and you'll be notified with 24 hours to go and with 15 minutes to go in the auction.

Yeah I won't bid with 4d on it. I may bid when it gets down to the last few hours if the price is still under 1k.

ND (879 D)

Yeah, honestly I may think about driving up. Quite the drive. You think there will be any other diplomacy related items in the estate sale? I didn't see any from the photos.
David E. Cohen (100 D)
29 Mar 17 UTC
Search ebay using "Calhamer". You will see some other items.
David E. Cohen (100 D)
29 Mar 17 UTC
Don't know about other Dip-related items at the physical sale. I am sure you could inquire.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
29 Mar 17 UTC
Unlikely, ND. I have worked with numerous estate sale companies and the general rule of thumb is that if you can't price something, don't know anyone who can appraise it, but know it is worth a lot of money, put it online before the sale. Most companies do that. Some even do that with things that can be priced, but they know they'll get top dollar for it on eBay. That's just how it goes.

Still, if you make the drive let me know. Depending on how my apartment furnishing quest goes in the next few weeks, I might have a place you can stay, though my place is over an hour north of the sale so maybe that's a bit inconvenient.

I'm curious about bo's logic. How does an early bid on eBay make the final price more expensive? Surely if there are several bidders it will just go to whoever puts in the higher upper limit regardless of when those bids are entered. All an early bid could achieve, if anything, is convince other potential bidders that it's a little rich for their blood.
Hauta (1618 D(S))
29 Mar 17 UTC
and then there's the thrill of being the temporary high bidder. If only for a few fleeting moments you can imagine that it's yours. You don't get that by waiting for it to be out of your price range.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
29 Mar 17 UTC
You could, Octavious, but if people would wait to bid until later, the price would be lower then. You could argue that that would increase the odds of the price skyrocketing - as a seller on eBay, yeah, it definitely does; I have seen it - but if you know how auctions generally go, a lower starting price and a slower start generally lead to lower prices and an influx of bids as the auction nears its end. I've never done the math to confirm this but I go to auctions weekly and sell dozens of things a month on eBay and that's how it seems to go.

I mentioned this elsewhere, but some of you may have noted that the little Sylvania company newsletter (where Mr. Calhamer worked at the time) which was mentioned as being stuck in the gamebox and was sold with the game has a picture of Mr. Calhamer and others Dipping. That might just be the earliest ever photograph on a game of Diplomacy in progress. Certainly, I have never seen an earlier one. Soooo cool!

Anyone interested in a game with 8-hour phase? I played a 4 hour game by accident and it was a brutal 3 days, submitting moves in the dead of night (when only Devin Nunes was awake)! I was thinking that 8 hours is challenging but not insane. Any takers?
