News is, by definition, stuff which happens rarely. But when we hear about threats regularily we assume the are not rare, and we fail to estimate the risk of those threats.

News channels get huge ratings boosts after terrorist attacks, and so the economics of news drive them to probide 24 hour coverage. Thus we massively over-estimate the risk of terrorism, and we get politicians offering big showy responces - which actualy do very little - so-called "Security Theatre"*

*though the examples of security theatre given in the video are the Muslim ban and building a wall, i believe that airport security is a great (and not particularily political) example.

People felt less safe after a terrorist high-jacks an airplane. We make life measurably worse for all air passengers with a big show of providing security, and the airlines don't lose business.

By makin it bug and showy, anyone who want to attack can see clearly what the protections are, and so strategically this is a bad approach for preventing attacks.

How and Ever it is a good move for resucing fear of attacks in the population. Which is the point of Security Theatre.

since there are 100,000 views on that video, wouldn't this drastically increase the chances that they're telling someone who in the future will die of terrorism NOT be worried about terrorism?

like i understand there are extremes to go to when fearing attacks, but the PRIMARY problem with security theatre is that A. it's not effective B. it makes you feel safer having it nearby.

but by showing this video and telling people NOT to be worried because the odds are so large, you are still asking for trouble.

It's like telling ALL of America not to buy Lottery tickets.

you just saved millions of people a small expense, but one guy... you REALLY fucked over

Wow James, you seem to be missing the point.

Security theatre is the thing which tells people not to be afraid. It is a message from the state that everything is ok, because we've taken these precautions.

So it is a problem.

The video doesn't effectively make people less afraid, also it doesn't tell people to he less afraid, which you might have noticed if you had watched the video.

Also i agree with you, when you tell people not to be afraid, and then do nothing to reduce the risk of an attack (an they are happy be ause they see all the security theatre) then you are placing more people at risk.

Why are people not playing LIVE games nowadays?

I am back after a long time. 4 years to be precise. But when I left, there used to be a lot of LIVE games all the times. Now, whenever I peek the website out of curiosity, I never find a LIVE game. I tried making rooms, but no one ever joined!

What happened here? :p

World Diplomacy Map Alterations

Hello WebDiplomacy. I have a group of people are making a physical World Diplomacy map for a big event, but we have agreed the board has some problems. Most of the people weighing on this issue say they want to take away South Africa's unit in Antarctica and instead put it in Madagascar as a fleet. However, I am worried that, unless South Africa and Argentina actively worked to stop this, it would give Antarctica too many possibilities for expansion in its home continent.

Petition to ban Capt Brad from full press games

Hi everyone. I'm starting a petition to ban capt brad from full press games. I love capt brad as much as the next person, but I think he's harming the integrity (or something) of the non-password protected full press community.
