I'm in. There should be a page that has anyone who is unshaven or bearded. And how long are they unkempt. Who likes this? That way sexyness can be shown.

Some years active funds do outpace passive enough to cover the costs and sometimes passive funds net out better. There isn't really a right or wrong in my eyes. Most advisors now don't care too much. You mostly have cheap salesman "advisors" who chiuck fixed annuities and life insuranve because they aren't securities licensed or you have more financial planners where the industry is moving to a retainer based model. For example all the clients in my practice pay a monthly retainer. I think that's a much better model as it incentivizes both the advisor and the client to meet regularly to stay on track for their goals.

Agreed Tom. My wife's fixed annuity was something I would have never suggested personally (it's 30 years old now). Since it maintains the fixed 4%, I just consider it the permanent "bonds" in our portfolio and adjust our investment mix accordingly.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
19 Feb 17 UTC
Oh. Absolutely agree. 4% guaranteed is unheard of in today's environment. That's a gen you should never let go of haha.

More common is I see people come in who get locked into confusing fixed index annuities where it's capped at 2 percent and have 15 year surrender periods. Fixed annuities have their place. Unfortunately they get misused a lot because you don't have to be securities licensed to sell them.
Matticus13 (2844 D)
19 Feb 17 UTC
The financial incentive for agents to push them is the problem. They just want the $.
Matticus13 (2844 D)
19 Feb 17 UTC
But you already know that. My company was dead set against the "fiduciary rule" for that reason alone.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
19 Feb 17 UTC
I somewhat agree. I think in almost any profession you have that push to a certain level. The problem with advisors who aren't licensed is that they can't offer alternatives besides fixed annuities and life insurance. I licensed advisor has lots of options to find something suitable to the client needs.

In any case this fiduciary rule is still likely to pass and will push the industry in a very positive direction.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
19 Feb 17 UTC
Yeah. Another reason I prefer the retainer model. In the pure commission model, the advisor has no incentive to recommend paying down a mortgage because they get no compensation for that. Putting a lump sum on a mortgage to pay it off could be the best thing for the client though. Hopefully this rule will help push advisors to focus less on financial products and more on financial philosophy/wellness

Who is budgeting on a monthly basis?

What expenses are your working on reducing?

I'm planing to start mowing my own lawn again after my busy season paying $100/month currently. Should save me $1000 in 2017. Also monitoring the grocery/eating out budget heavily, got that down to $585 per month. Big part of that is reducing alcohol consumption, have only spent $47 on alcohol in 2017.

My 2017 budget goal is not eating out for lunch. Been packing lunch every day and saving a decent chunk of money just by doing that (eating healthier too)
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))

Actually I won't start til may so that's only $800

Yeah packing lunch is key. I used to do a lot of progresso soups, switched to PBJ each day saves money and less sodium.

Some books I recommend: How to Get Out of Debt and Stay Out of Debt by George Mundis, Money by Arnold Patent, and You Can Have it All by Arnold Patent. I have used the spiritual approach towards money for a few years now and it's much better than any other(btw I am a landlord).

There is nothing inherently wrong with passive investing. But it's not a set it and forget it thing. You do have to micro manage it. There are so many nuisances that go into making investments decisions. What works for me won't necessarily work for you. If you are interested in learning more about active management try watching the Tastytrade network online. Tastytrade.com.
Lastly pending on your risk tolerance and goals owning debt at these interest rate levels is a good thing. There is still the carried interests deduction for taxes and with rates about to rise own 30year fixed mortgage will pay off in the end

If you're looking for literature on investing specifically, one of my own personal favorites is "The Most Important Thing" by Howard Marks. Would definitely recommend to anyone who invests money into the stock market, even if it is just through a mutual fund.

"But I use a credit card within certain parameters."

If used properly, credit cards can be an amazing financial tool. I have an Amazon card that gives me 5% back on every Amazon purchase. That is an incredibly large discount. My other card gives me 3% on gas (I think), which is like 7 cents of per gallon. To not use credit cards is like throwing away free money.

Of course, it's crucial you budget properly and never carry a balance. Interest rates are so high that even a small balance will totally offset any cash back program.
@abge do you churn cards?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
20 Feb 17 UTC
No, that is much more effort than I'm willing to spend. I found 2 cards that give me the best payback based on my spending habits and use those.
I use a Southwest Visa card. The points generated cover vacation flights for myself (wife has a companion pass) and kids. That works pretty well, even to Cabo last year. I've been thinking about getting a Chase Sapphire card for greater scope of rewards, but the dilution might not be worth it. I pay off my balance each month.

I don't read/consume anything on the subject of personal finance. I just live my life, do what I want, and try to avoid being stupid. My only debt currently is house-related. I live in SF, so the house-debt is bad.

Either y'all are looking shit up before you post or some of you have way too much walking-around knowledge. It's pretty impressive. So really, what makes you smarter than the 99%? Coast To Coast: The Various Coasts Of The Board.
There are only three territories on the entire board that have more than one coast—Spain, St. Petersburg, and Bulgaria. For each territory, which coast is the most commonly occupied by a fleet? And for coasts that are unpopular, in what situations might they be occupied?

Italy: What Are The Benefits?
In response to a thread I posted earlier, titled, "Italy Opening Strategy: Early Attack on France?," I decided to post another thread regarding Italy. Italy is the slowest nation to develop, and also the hardest to win with. Are there any benefits to playing Italy? What advantages does Italy have over other players?

Anybody play live games anymore?
When I started on this site years ago, everybody and their mama was playing, a lot of live games happening. I took a few years off and now that I'm back there seems to be a huge drop off in total games being played, and there are NO live games at all. I havent seen one I havent created. None of mine ever get full, or even a few people. What the heck happened?

Incorporating WWI Strategies Into Diplomacy: Could It Work?
Diplomacy is set in WWI. Even though it is up to players to play how they like, might it be sensible and feasible to incorporate real-world strategies and plans from WWI into the game? For example, could Germany try the Schlieffen Plan against France? Should Italy go straight for Trieste, as it did in WWI? And should Russia seek to defend Serbia against Austria-Hungary? Thoughts?
