I have had it work before, it is a quiet alliance to begin with since dmz in the western med are so common in the early game. It is hard keeping it going though. I would never give up Marseilles as France though.

I've always wondered the opposite: is it possible for Italy to have a stern attack on France at the beginning of the game? With respect to an alliance, I can see it working. I have seen World Diplomacy Championship games with French-Italian alliances. In such an alliance, Italy needs to focus on Austria-Hungary, and France needs to focus on England and Germany. A French-Italian alliance, though, works more in the interest of Italy than France, though; so just keep that in mind as a French player.
