It's pretty hard to quantify who the worst President ever truly is. One of my least favorite is Truman, which is probably not a common reply. There is certainly good and bad during his 8 years.

Sarcasm aside, its pretty obvious our peculiar institution was a shitty thing. Do American slaveholders deserve a free pass because of the time? No. But their contributions to our early nation cannot be discounted either. In a historical context, the whole man should be evaluated.

my one defense of thee people is that for the time period, there were "Scientific Proofs" that Black people were NOT human.

Of course, if these were honest men of the time, they wouldn't automatically take everything the scientists said as gospel, without some basic explanations. Instead the pseudoscience train marched on

Andrew Johnson is clearly the worst president of all time. Reconstruction working would have saved America from so much of the terrible stuff that has happened.

@Jeff: Jefferson didn't just *own* slaves. Before he became President, he pushed legislation in Virginia banning freed slaves from living in the state. He engaged in child slavery, putting child slaves to work in a nail factory he owned. He used at least one female slave for sex.
