Where do the Pokemon spawn for you guys?

Around. I just used incense to catch most of my Pokemon. The first couple where I was actually outside for were near businesses, and apparently there are some around my neighborhood but aren't too close to my house.

I've closed and reopened the app several times to try to get them to spawn, but it's just not happening.

I'll probably actually have to leave my house.

Me: "Officer... technically I wasn't texting and driving, but if you let me off with a warning there's a Raichu in it for you"

Officer: "As long as that's a euphemism for a blowjob, deal"

Me: "Also, yes"

no Prado dont do that. people are gettin shot out there and shit. plus, is it really worth it to grab a charmander just to get killd by a copper?

Agreed. And based on where you're living, you might catch a lot of Pokémon.

And conversely, if you live in the sticks, you might only end up having a Squirtle to battle with.

Tried Pokemon go yesterday, server errors and issues, don't think it saved my charmander, trying it again in a little while.

Other than catching Pokémon (just throwing a poké ball and you always catch?) what else can you do?

You can battle other people

There's a sort of battle system which is the closest thing there is to multiplayer. Basically certain spots on the map are gyms. If they haven't been captured you can claim it and put your Pokemon there. Gyms claimed by your team (you choose one of 3 teams at level 5), you can train your Pokemon by having them battle there or you can leave one to help defend it. Gyms claimed by one of the other teams you can go to to try to beat it and claim them for your team.

I wouldn't say it's "other people." You can battle Pokemon captured by other people, but it's AI controlled.

Okay so you do have leveling and evolving? Is there a 'goal'? Claim all gyms or something?

The "level" refers more to you individually leveling. However there are training and evolving systems for Pokemon. Every time you capture a Pokemon you get a thing called stardust as well as Pokemon specific candies. These can be used to make the Pokemon stronger, which requires some amount of stardust and one candy of that Pokemon's type. Evolving also requires a certain amount of these candies, so you basically have to catch a lot of the same Pokemon to get one to evolve. The evolved forms don't have their own specific candy, however, and use the same ones as the Pokemon from which they evolved, so Pidgeotto uses a Pidgey candy to get stronger and closer to evolving.

But wait, they didn't think of introducing the possibility to battle your friends?

Friend of mine caught a lot in the middle of Madrid, I was like whut :-)

In urban areas there are going to be a lot of normal types, like Rattata. People playing it in the city are very likely to have Rattata.

And in terms of the battle system, that's definitely my one big complaint, especially now that the servers seem much more reliable. I hope they change that as well as adding a trading system in later updates. That would drastically improve the multiplayer experience.
