WebDiplomacy policy on restarting a game
I'm sure this type of topic has happened before. One of the players in "Friendly Mediterranean Variation" managed to 'ready' without any units being ordered. All units were held. Major screw up. Hurts the balance of the game. We are still kind of discussing the ramifications and what to do about the moves... but is it possible to either fix the moves for him? or restart the game with everyone playing the same countries?

I'm curious to know what people consider their worst mistakes in their entire Diplomacy career. Is it failing in a guaranteed solo? Messing up a secure draw? Being eliminated when you shouldn't have?

Diplomacy walk-on music
It's the year 2030. Diplomacy has finally taken its rightful place as one of the "big four" global sports, along with soccer, twenty20 cricket, and ultimate frisbee. The first million dollar tournament opens with hordes of screaming fans straining to glimpse you as you stroll to the game board, your walk-on music reverberating through the arena...

What is that music?

British MP murdered in right-wing terror attack

Earlier today a Member of Parliament in the UK, Jo Cox MP, was shot and stabbed outside an advice meeting for her local constituents in West Yorkshire. It has now been confirmed that she has died of her injuries.

Jo Cox was one of the most outspoken voices at Westminster in favour of showing more compassion to Syrian refugees and pursuing a European and international solution to the refugee crisis. Multiple eyewitnesses have reported that her attacker, who has been arrested, shouted the slogans of the racist, right-wing group Britain First, before and during the attack. This comes a day after media reports that Britain First had been holding training sessions for members which included tutorials on knife combat.

I wonder how long it will take Britain's far right to condemn this murderous, hate-fuelled attack on a democratically elected representative, in the course of doing her job representing and helping her constituents? Whenever an incident involving the so-called IS or Daesh hits the news, Britain First, the BNP, and their odious supporters are quick to demand that every single Muslim in the UK apologise and condemn the attack. Will every BF, NF and BNP supporter now do the same?

R.I.P. Jo Cox MP.

Truly awful news. An attack on an elected representative is an attack on us all.

I'd prefer to wait for more info before commenting further, but I do understand your anger at the far right Jamie.

There's nothing wrong with being nationalist, but there is with violence. It is terrible news but why is it worse because it's someone who's known? Surely it's just as bad if somebody you've never heard of is murdered... Murders are always horrible but it annoys me when known people are killed it's somehow more important, they're still just a person like anyone else

When someone is killed performing public service, be it in the military, emergency services, or indeed government representatives, it carries a greater weight with the public. They put themselves at risk because we demand it of them. As such we feel it more when they pay the price.

As Maniac suggested, an attack on an elected representative is an attack on democracy itself. Such things have a special resonance.

This is pathetic. How can we claim to be a civilised nation if people are murdered over their political views? RIP Jo Cox. I didn't think I'd have to see another Golden Dawn after I left Greece.

A sad day for England.
I fear however that nothing can be done except to show solidarity with her family and condemn the attack. Crazy people will always exist.

Please do not label the person as " Crazy " . He did it deliberately and with malice.

Crazy is a term also used for those living with mental Illness. I live with Bi-pola but also condemn the assault and my thoughts are with her family and Friends.

Using terms like " crazy" in open forums further promotes stigma and fear and prejudice something I believe Jo Cox was standing against.
Maniac (189 D(B))

In court the suspect gave his name as 'Death to traitors, freedom for Britain.'.

I was cautious about jumping to conclusions prior to getting all the information, but it is now clear that this was a right-wing attack.

I agree with Smokey, that we should be careful in our use of language with regard to people who may have mental health issues.

It depends how you define right wing, I guess. Freedom is something that I associate with the right, as as a dim view of traitors, but the more crucial aspect of murdering elected representatives in cold blood is much associated with the right wing as it is with gardening.

I've not seen any evidence that he associated with any political group at all, to be honest. Evidence suggests he took inspiration from extreme right groups, but he doesn't appear to be a member of any of them.

A lot of what we're hearing doesn't add up as things stand. I reckon we should hold off until the investigation makes progress.

That hardly counts as a favourable mention. It's the magazine trying to keep hold of what is likely a very small readership. It's similar to the letters New Scientist send me when my subscription expires.

If they had said something like "Thomas is an outstanding member of the community", that would count as a favourable mention. But it is entirely possible to receive such mentions without actually being favoured.

The picture is extremely confusing. He apparently has some interest in the extreme right. He is also a keen volunteer in the local community who has helped with gardening and teaching English to immigrants, a member of a close mixed race family, and a man who has happily discussed politics with local people without any mention of anything remotely extreme.

As things stand it doesn't add up.

@steephie I think it is just right to talk about gun control the day after a mass shooting occurs, as well I think it is correct to talk about fascism and nationalism the day after a fascist murders a elected MP in the UK.

While it should never be forgotten that all politics is, ultimately, violence, there is never a justification for murdering a mother of two small children.

In this case at least, I have to say it's a pity the Brits gave up their tradition of torturing criminals to death long ago.

There appears to be an attack on right wingers here... Just because ONE person did something over the top it's suddenly a bad thing to be nationalist. As I said earlier there's no problem with being nationalist there's just a problem with the way SOME people go about dealing with it.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

Just for the record, I am of the opinion that there *are* things wrong with being nationalist. I'm also pro gun-control. Those are political opinions though. If you're going to pretend that the Leave campaign suddenly became the Kill Jo Cox campaign or something, you're not just being disrespectful by turning a sad occasion into a political talking point, it's also an extremely weak argument which is only going to convince the idiots who think that the leave campaign supports this kind of actions.

"There appears to be an attack on right wingers here.."

An "attack on right-wingers"? I am right wing, you doofus. I'd be supporting Brexit and might've even been one of the people splashing Jo Cox' boat on the Thames last week if I were British. Nationalism is one thing, but shooting and stabbing a helpless unarmed woman is the kind of barbaric brutality you'd expect from some nutjob weaned on PC feminist equality malarkey, NOT an act of someone who had any decency or compassion for the fairer sex.

"I am merely pointing out that assassinations aren't unique to right-wing extremists."

Baloney. Suggesting that a Muzzie terrorist murdering a homosexual politician somehow defines civilized behavior as you have done shows just how muddled our standards have become. Western values are an important part of what makes us unique; surrendering them with a "tu quoque" argument and declaring us no different from Muslim Terrorists - as you have just done - is to sacrifice the moral superiority of Judeo-Christian/Western Civilization on the altar of Cultural Marxism. It is truly disgusting to see someone claiming to be a conservative try to justify or excuse the murder of a mother of two small children. If this is what has become of conservatism, it may be time to knock the whole thing down and start from scratch.

Wanted: Thoughtful Discussion
I'm working on a project where I have to document the process of having a discussion with someone whose views I disagree with. The point of the assignment is to examine my own biases, and find ways to address them. So, since I consider myself liberal in most social and economic policy, I'm looking for an open-minded conservative to debate and discuss politics with. If you're interested, shoot me a PM. Thanks.

Gun control
Webdip has changed so much, back in the day after a mass shooting we'd have a thread within a minute, argue for days and then nothing would get done. Now we just leap straight to doing nothing. I miss the old times.
