NEW ENGLAND PLAYER WANTED FOR WWI TEAM GAME!
England has gone into civil disorder so we need a new English player. This is a team game where the allies (Britain, France and Russia) fight the axis (Germany, Austria and Turkey).. England has missed a couple of phases but is still in a good position. The game ID is 179879. It is called "World War One team game". The password for the game is "shellshock". Once you have joined have a look at the other thread on the forum called "WWI team game" to get familiar with the rules.

New World War I team game - played as 2 teams. Starting soon!
I've been wanting to do this for a long time. I'm not sure if it's been done before. Apologies if it's already been done. I've created a game called "WWI team game" and the idea is that we will recreate world war one by playing the game as 2 teams; the triple alliance consisting of Austria, Germany and turkey and the triple entente consisting of England, France and Russia.

(Poll) How Many Draws Equal a Solo
I'm working on a project (may submit it to a zine, may just be for my own amusement) and I'm trying to find out what various Diplomacy communities view as the relationship in accomplishment between draws and solo victories.
Musoeun (133 D)
10 Jun 16 UTC

Note: webDiplomacy doesn't seem to have a forum poll feature, but if you can give answers in the thread that's close enough - I can tally them by hand. Poll options in the other forum I asked the question were 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6+: that poll will close in a week and I'll tally results here then too.

I want to state emphatically that I am NOT interested in discussing this site's (or any other site's or tournament's) scoring, ranking, rating, or other numerical evaluation of game performance. This is merely by way of satisfying my own curiosity about what the community here feels about game results: what do you see when you're looking at another player's record (or your own)?

Consider two hypothetical players:

Player A plays some number of games, of which he solos one and loses the rest.
Player B plays the same number of games, and draws every one.

That is, after each plays 2 games A has 1 solo and 1 loss while B 2 two draws, after 10 games A would have 1 solo and 9 losses while B has 10 draws, etc.

After how many games played are the two players' accomplishments approximately equivalent? For the mathematically inclined, if s is the value of a solo win and d is the (average) value of a draw, for what number of games n is the equation dn = s true? (For the purposes of the question, assume they don't play each other but play exactly equivalent-difficulty opponents. Assume also that all of B's results are "good" draws: no early cop-outs)

I'd say that I prefer 1 solo win over 5 DIAS draws.
peterlund (1310 D(G))

If I sort of win in a SoS draw it is better than taking part in a DIAS(=Draw-Size Scoring) draw. 2 "wins" in SoS draws = 1 solo
yoak (1676 D)

It seems to be that the most relevant thing is how many people are in the draws. Three two-way draws seem better than six five-way draws. A naive approach would be to count a draw as 1/n where n is the number of people in a draw, so that 3 three-way draws would equal one solo, etc. I think this under-values solos, but it is a start. Another factor is the number of players who started. Would you count a 3wd the same in Ancient Med and World? But when you account for that, you're starting to come close to the point system you don't want to discuss. :-)

Infinite. Only a solo will do.

I'd say that 3 draws is a solo because I see a "loss" as being completely eliminated, and I view that very poorly, but if it is survived (which I still don't really like), I'd say 5 draws. If in the draw the player is the "fattest" I'd say 3 no matter what, as I love to draw in SOS when I'm fat because everyone doesn't want me to solo, but I gain many points

A loss is better than a seven-way draw. (Except that one time.) Meanwhile, a two-way draw is about as impressive as a solo.

@ Musoeun

I don't think that your question works. You're not comparing solos and draws, but solos, defeats, and draws.

In my mind I am happy if I have a solo for every two losses. Draws, outside of tournaments that value them, are essentially neutral results that carry no weight either way for me.

1 solo = 1 win, infinite draws = 0 wins.

Since the game is to solo, any other result is a loss. Being good at surviving to force a draw is not the same being being good at winning diplomacy.

So if the question is, how do you measure how good someone is at diplomacy, then the clearest answer is, solo. Draws are worth nothing.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
10 Jun 16 UTC
@Bob the lord, if you are the fattest member of the draw, then you did really badly failing to achieve a solo. If you were eliminated than perhaps you never had a chance... so you didn't do so badly.

If you are small but stop someone else getting a solo that is far more impressive than if you are big. If you survive with 5 other bigger players to a draw, then you have done far better than if you were the biggest player in that draw.

This is the kind of thinking that diplomacy encourages. When thinking about your allies, do you want them to be strong or weak? is it better to have weak allies who have proven themselves less than able to protect themselves, or a strong ally who is then a potential threat?
Lethologica (203 D)
10 Jun 16 UTC
@PF: Alliance-happy fools they may be, but they were fools who were good enough to win and simply passed on it, unless I misunderstand how 2WDs usually play out. Scum who play the game wrong? Probably. But good.
When done correctly, I would say that a 2WD is the result of two strong players who are working together on the elimination of the third remaining power. Each is eliminating the third power in the expectation/hope that the other large power will make a mistake along the way. That mistake might open the door for a solo possibility. If both players are savvy and diligent, the third power is in fact eliminated and the count ends at 17/17. If one screws up, then the other might take advantage and record a solo. The tricky part is that there is no control over what the small power being eliminated will do, so you have to take into account all possibilities including that the small power will attempt to throw the game to the other large power.

I don't think they compare. A draw after playing an interesting game of Diplomacy is a fine feeling. But a win, now that is glory.
