in this game (http://95.211.128.12/webdiplomacy/board.php?gameID=92049#gamePanel) i saw a scoring system called Survivors-Win Scoring, but when i tried to create a game with this type of point scoring system i couldn't find it in the advanced settings. so, my question is, how do i create a game with this type of scoring system?

Turning Over a New Leaf
I just want to take a moment to say that I've been so proud of this forum in the last few days. The entire world has been buzzing with insanely controversial, easily polarizing political events in the past few days and we haven't had a vitriolic, stupidly biased thread so far. Kudos to everyone.

How much would building an island for a million people in international waters cost?
I'm talking excluding living supplies etc. Just building the island. Alternatively, an island chain will do too.

Just some big numbers-math for fun. Anyone wants to do an estimate?

Vegetarians, Vegans, et al.
I am just getting started with this lifestyle change. I am leaning towards a whole foods plant based diet as in Plant Pure Nation. Any suggestions of things to try? Recipes? etc.

You should probably specify whether you're going Vegetarian or going Vegan, as there's a massive difference.
I am not quite sure myself. I am probably not going completely Vegan although I am not doing dairy products.
Good cheese substitutes would be a place to start.

Honestly, they have substitutes for just about anything nowadays. They're more expensive and taste worse, but you can still use vegan cheese in place of genuine cheese and other foods like that.

My Uncle was vegetarian for 30 years but ate too much cheese and it made his cholesterol levels skyrocket so he had to stop eating cheese.

Then again, he replaced it by eating chicken, which is probably not the solution you're looking for.

Ooh a thread for me!

I eat lots of cheese, so I can't help you with that specific request, but I can offer some general pointers.
-Tofu and beans are your friends. Substitutes are nice sometimes, but at the end of the day, you want to be eating food that is what it is rather than eating something that reminds you of what you really want. Get yourself used to using a bunch of different beans in a bunch of different ways (Mexican and Indian food is the best here imo), and make Tofu stir fries a staple.
-If you are using substitutes, use them in things, and try to get the ones that focus on being nutritionally similar rather than matching taste (the best is Field Roast, though I don't know how easy that is to find outside of Seattle). It's easier to make your chiquen taste like chicken if it's a component of a full dish and not standalone nuggets.
-Learn to love all the veggies you think you don't like. Proper commitment and that gag reflex goes away in time. This is the variety in your diet, and it's better if there's more of it from a sanity perspective.

So the best meat substitute is actually young jackfruit. I think it's a southeast Asian thing, but it has a messy texture and soaks up whatever sauce you use, so it can taste a lot like pulled pork.

Seitan is easy to cook with and a great protein, I use it in stir frys. Also an avocado ruben is my favorite sandwich, use non dairy thousand island dressing, Sauerkraut, heat it up on the stove. Congrats on the change.

@ ghug

I genuinely can't work out if you're offering supportive advice or trying to put him off :p.

@CA

Never forget that, as with all lifestyle choices, it can be easily tweaked or fully reversed if you find yourself dissatisfied by the outcome. It's not a religious fast or strict medical advice, after all. If you find the bacon butty calling to you, there is no penalty for answering :)
I'm interested in knowing the reasoning behind your change. Is it moral? Dietary? Just for the heck of it?
orathaic (1009 D(B))

I've been vegetarian for a fee years and given up dairy this year. Alas i'm not great at feeding myself. Quorn is a nice meat substitute, but i usually try to eat healthy instead of trying fake versions of things you already like. There are great vegan recipies out there and restaurants. I'm sure you will survive, and don't feel bad about 'cheating' if it makes the transition easier. You may be more easily adopt new habits if you take your time with it.

It's terrible that people are still suffering from this. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has proved to be beneficial in many cases of Vegetarianism. Talk to your GP. He should be able to refer you to a local clinic.
Whatever you do don't suffer in silence, it's not something to be ashamed of.
Even Vegans can be helped. There are new drug trials almost every year. Have hope and look for support from your family and friends. Remember you are not to blame, you are as good as everyone else.

If you do want supplements it is a task finding ones that are themselves 100% vegan. I take rainbow light multi vitamins.
@Peregrine falcon

My wife made the change and I initially said I would do it with her as moral support. We went through a two week period where we basically avoided sugar, caffeine, artificial sweeteners, meat, dairy, sodas, etc.

Looking further into it, the thing that really got me was that it takes eight pounds of grain to bring one pound of meat to market. That's too inefficient in a world where many people go hungry. So, taking my family out of the customer pool for the meat industry seems like the right thing to do, even if it is not a solution.

@ Putin thanks for the advice and the encouragement, Reuben sandwiches are my Moms' favorite I may try to make one of those. I will look into the supplements. That has been a concern since I do not usually take vitamins of any kind.

@orathaic Yes, I'm not getting too bent out of shape about it right now. I am still eating salmon and eggs from time to time, but I am using those to introduce new flavors to the kids (and myself), I made omelets with poblano and serrano peppers last night and my nine year old raved about them. It will be a process. I id like coming out of the hibachi grill for my son's birthday being the only one not in pain from being stuffed.
@ghug

Yes, especially the last point about expanding our tastes, I am learning that I do like onions (hated them my whole life) and I am also developing more of a tastes for peppers.

If a cause of hunger was the inability to produce enough food I'd be inclined to agree, but globally this is not an issue. Hunger is a problem of politics and logistics, and changing your diet won't impact that one way or the other.
Octavious (2732 D)

Not that that's a reason not to try it either, of course. If you decide you enjoy it, then good for you.

I second seitan.

I am extremely lazy about cooking, so my advice: Go to the grocery store and buy any five vegetables you like, plus some beans and rice/lentils/quinoa/tofu for protein. The other five vegetables can all almost certainly be roasted in the oven or sauteed with olive oil and salt and pepper to delicious result. Some people think they don't like cauliflower or broccoli or turnips or whatever, but I've never had vegetables that weren't at least pretty good oven-roasted or sauteed. My wife and I have this for a meal every week - we both pick two or three veggies that look good.

Unless you're a weight-lifter, getting enough protein as a vegetarian is actually pretty easy. Eat oatmeal and nuts for breakfast, you should anyway. Even vegans can easily get plenty of protein if they're careful, though I have never been able to go all the way vegan for long.

That's not necessarily true. The amount of meat we eat as a society is unsustainable. We already eat more meat than we need in the western world, which can't be adopted by the rest of the world. Thus, we in the western world need to reduce our reliance on meat and find alternatives. The more prevalent vegetarians are, the easier that becomes.
You also said that changing your diet won't impact the issues at all. However, that's also not true. While you're right that one person's choice won't affect the food industry directly, it can help to shift social norms away from such a meat heavy diet towards something more sustainable for the entire world.
TooCoolSunday (634 D)

@PF It is only unsustainable if the rest of the world ate meat at the rate the western world does. As it is, it's fine. It will not become unsustainable, just more expensive. Enjoy it while you can.

p.s. lentils and soya are not the same proteins as meat. Have you ever tried putting a peanut on a barbie?
