You have escaped yon dungeon.
Now the kingdom is in peril. An imposter has taken over the governors mansion and flooded the countryside with flesh eating rabbits. Anyone caught out after dark is getting shredded by these chupacabras. After several days of going from place to place you find yourself hiding inside a burger king. outside there are rabbits. thousands of them. what do you do.

[Suggestion] Only one winner option
I know that the formula of this website is stable and rarely sees major changes. That being said, I'd like to suggest to implement an option by which the option to draw is eliminated, and ultimately there can be only one winner.

Where to buy a gaming computer?
So, I've got some money put aside for a new computer. In the past I've just gotten a cheap dell or had some help buying parts and putting one together. At this point I'd like to buy a pre-built one for a decent price that will do well playing games. Does such exist? What do I need to look for?

Thanks!

After further investigation, yes it is, but it ends on the 27th. Of course any of these sales and promotions could also go poof between now and when I submit my purchase, so we'll just have to see. Let me know about the modular cables. Thanks!
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
23 Apr 16 UTC
You have the PSU and then a bunch of cables that connect to the Mobo, SSD, GPU, etc. Modular means the cables unplug from the PSU so you don't have loose cables. The cheaper one has all the cables permanently plugged into the PSU. Some people care. I don't. I don't think it's worth the extra price.

The last thing you need from Newegg is the case. This can be a bit annoying because it's hard to tell if everything will fit well, so I go mostly off the reviews of other people.

Basically, you just want one with enough room to fit everything and good fans or your rig will sound like an aircraft taking off every time you start it up. You could buy a case and replace the fans if you don't like them, but it's nice if the ones you buy are just fine.

I love Lian-Li cases. I think they make very beautiful, high quality cases for not much more than others. This is the newest version of what I have, which has served me well for over 8 years now:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112099

You'll note the front ports are on the bottom of the case, which you may not like.

Here's a slightly different model:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112304

If you want to save money, though, this is a fine place to do so. Here's one that's much more reasonably priced:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147153

The front USB ports are 2.0, but I don't think that matters.

Once you pick these items, we can see the price and decide if you want to reduce anything before moving on to the Monitor
Alderian (2425 D(S))
24 Apr 16 UTC
Hrmm. I'd really prefer the front ports be at the top. That other one has them on the top but is much more expensive. I've got a Cooler Master right now and I think it has been fine. What do you think of Cooler Masters? Or got any other recommendations?

What do you think of this one?

abgemacht (1076 D(G))
24 Apr 16 UTC
The reviews on that one did not seem good. Lot's of people complaining about the length of the front cables, SSD mounts, and I think it only comes with 1 fan, which is not enough.

Of the ones I've looked at, I'd still take this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147153

Really, why do you need USB 3.0 in the front? There are still all the USB3.0 ports in the back if you want an external SSD.

Here's a Cooler Master with 1 USB 3.0:

InWin cases are pretty cool. A little more expensive; but they look awesome - which is what really matters, right?

(USB 3.0 at the top and front for ya there)

Here is the mouse I currently use. I find it comfortable and the batteries last a very long time (haven't replaced them yet and it's been over a year). For only $20 I think it's a very good buy: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-910-001822-M510-Wireless-Mouse/dp/B003NR57BY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461601419&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+mouse

I really like mechanical keyboards; they are a pure joy to type on. I also don't like gimmicks. lights, etc on my keyboards. Really, it's completely up to you, though, for what you enjoy and how much you're willing to spend. I have 2 das Keyboards: one with Cherry Blue switches at work for typing/coding and one with Cherry Brown switches at home for gaming. You can read more about mechanical keyboards here: http://www.keyboardco.com/blog/index.php/2012/12/an-introduction-to-cherry-mx-mechanical-switches/

Here is the model I have:
http://www.amazon.com/Das-Keyboard-Professional-Mechanical-DASK3MKPROSIL/dp/B008PFDUW2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1461601810&sr=8-2&keywords=das+keyboard+brown

And here is the newer model:
http://www.amazon.com/Das-Keyboard-Professional-Soft-Tactile/dp/B00JG01QTY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461601810&sr=8-1&keywords=das+keyboard+brown

For gaming, beyond the keys, what you want to make sure is it has N-key rollover or anti-ghosting. This is used on USB keyboards to mimic PS/2 keyboards and prevent ghosting (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rollover_(key)). This is very important for FPS games.

You don't have to spend $100+ to get a very good keyboard, though. If you want to save money, I'd recommend this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-G105-920-003371-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B00BBUCCKO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1461602597&sr=8-2&keywords=anti+ghosting+keyboard

If you don't play FPS or just don't care about ghosting, you could save a bunch of money. Probably this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-920-002478-Keyboard-K120/dp/B003ELVLKU/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1461602592&sr=8-5&keywords=keyboard

Honestly, though, this is just my opinion. When it comes to keyboards and mice it's almost 100% what you personally like.

Do you want speakers or just a headset?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
25 Apr 16 UTC
As I've said, I'm not the best person to advise on Monitors. I had Samsungs for a long time and liked them a lot. When I built this machine, I went with Asus to save some money. Personally, I haven't been a fan. There's a lot of horizontal tearing when watching video (although games are unaffected). The ports are also kind of jankety and I lose power on it frequently. With that being, said, they are the highest reviewed monitors on Newegg, so maybe I just got unlucky. I'd recommend you do some research beyond what I show you here, but this will at least give you an idea on price so you know how much to save in your budget:

No worries. I'm just having fun picking out parts
Alderian (2425 D(S))

I'll have to check out the "N-key rollover or anti-ghosting". Probably won't be spending lots on keyboard, mouse, speakers. Monitor is a hard one.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
06 May 16 UTC
It's been long enough, you may want to go back through and recheck for deals. Unfortunately, things get stale pretty quickly. Of course, if you don't care about not getting the best deal, all the parts are still good, just maybe higher than they previously were.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

I'll probably get keyboard, mouse, speakers local so I can verify the feel and whatnot.

How do I buy Windows?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
06 May 16 UTC
I'd get it from Amazon. Look for Win 10 Pro 64bit OEM.

The OEM version is usually significantly cheaper than the regular consumer version. Just try to buy from a legit place, there are a good number of games out there.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
06 May 16 UTC
Alternately for half the price you could buy a copy of Win7 and then do the free upgrade. That could be a major bitch, to use the technical term, so it's up to you if the $40 is worth it.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
06 May 16 UTC
Regarding monitors: I have an iiyama which is pretty good; though in the 4 years since I got it the black has faded quite a lot. Other than that it's worked perfectly and has a very solid clear resolution, though, and I imagine that newer monitors are less likely to have black-fading like this. I had an ASUS monitor in the past and it was very average - wouldn't get one again.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Abge, if you'd be willing to oblige, what are the key differences between Home and Pro for which I'd pay extra for the Pro?

I looked at newegg for windows and it was certainly more than on amazon, but my fear on amazon is how do I know if it is legit place?

And many thanks. I've got all my parts, sans peripherals. CPU, MB, PSU installed in case. Next up is the CPU fan.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
13 May 16 UTC
Glad things are going well. I'll take a look to see if there are differences between home and pro that matter for your use.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
13 May 16 UTC
From what I can tell the big difference is that Home doesn't have Remote Desktop Host, Bitlocker, or Hyper-V. I don't think any of these are needed for gaming, but it depends on your particular use case.

Facebook Dilemma
I recently started using Facebook just to reach people I can't contact any other way.
It just occurred to me that it makes sense to friend pretty much every suggested person, even random people who added me for unknown reasons, from a PR point of view. I don't know what that does to my privacy if I do start to use it though..
Thoughts?
