The Pantheon's Oculus, an original brainbomb theory
So I recently did a lecture on the Pantheon. I find it interesting becuse it is a perfect example of the use of the Roman invention of the Dome and also the use of Corinthian Columns (the signature Roman column).
But at its center is the Oculus, a hole in the dome intended for structural support which allows the interior of the Pantheon to be illuminated.

Supreme Court Deadlock (US, abortion)
It is in all the big news websites, what do people think. Is this texan law an undue burden? Should the supreme court make a decision or pass it back down? Will republicans regret blocking Obama is the lower courts start making all the decisions?

Book Club
Is anyone interested in starting a book club.

Where we pick a book each month and debate that issues it raises on the forum? (sign up below) I'm thinking of things which are political/economic books like 'Guns, Germs and Steel' by Jared Diamond, or 'Hot, Flay and Crowded' buy Thomas Friedman.

Jk. I think it's totally unethical to take advantage of new players like that. Just like meta gaming, multing, winning live games off civil disorders...

I think there's no one size fits all way to describe new players to this site...some have good " board game" or other experience and adapt quickly, the players who have virtually no experience provide an anarchic factor that can provide delightful unexpected twists. I wonder what the "genuine" inexperienced new players think about playing games with wily and cunning experienced players ? What's a high pot game ? If the buy in is 100 plus points per player there shouldn't be too many "noobs" joining

To be clear, c0dyz and I started around the same time (2 months ago), along with about 15 other people we know. We've all played tons of games with various iterations of those people.

This is the game in question: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=175242
He made this game and only invited people who have never won or drawn a game. And keep in mind, these people started around the same time as us. He's stated (to me, not the noobs) that the purpose of this game was for him to get a bunch of points.

I think it's necessary for new players such as myself to experience how far you need to get after you get your feet wet in a couple of game. A game with MajorMitchell humbled me a month ago like very few things I experienced in my life. There were strong words exchanged but I learned a lot. Therefore if they see it as an opportunity to grow, it should be fine. Don't think you should be seeking such games though.

We wouldn't have a points system if we wanted to discourage you from playing for points. They all accepted their invitation, play on.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
17 Mar 16 UTC
"to gain points experienced players will have to play new players, since playing among themselves will be effectively 0-sum" was an original reasoning for having points as Bo-sox mentioned. I just wanted to emphasize the second part there.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
17 Mar 16 UTC
What that should say is that you need to play a wide variety of people, else you will simply trade points over time in a relatively balanced way. There's enough newbies on this site that I imagine you could make a living ripping them off, though. You would have a low GR and even lower respect, but if points are all that matter to you, it could be done.

Completely unethical. I approve. I can't wait to play noobs with my new submarine and nerve gas hacks.
MajorMitchell (1600 D)

Yes, I got cranky and called Pahla a cork brained clown & more....and I'm not sure that experienced players playing only experienced players is a zero sum game...yes new players bring more points, but experience isn't the only quality required to reach the top, top ranks, what about the dark arts of seductive harlotry ? Some players will have more success against players of equivalent experience because they have the "better mix of other talents" ....without new players maybe a zero sum game at the "macroscopic" level, but I don't think zero sum for individuals playing against players of equivalent "experience"..... we haven't specifically defined what we mean by " experience " ...simply a number of games of Diplomacy played ?...or is a wider definition applicable ?

Obviously it's different if someone familiar with the game itself joins the website or if it's someone like me who first played the game at WebDip.
I would classify the latter as a noob we're talking about here. 10 games should be enough for a person to stop being a noob and be capable of at least not making colossal mistakes in a game such as the one I made disbanding Greece MajorMitchell

Replacement wanted
Oz in gameID=171427 is being replaced due to inactivity. Please note that this is a special rules roleplaying thread. To see the original rules, see viewthread=1325508 . Know that this game takes dedication, as it will quite possibly last many more months, and there are more than 60 pages of message archives.

If you are interested, please PM me.
