Karl Marx's predictions about wages
If I under correctly Karl Marx predicted that workers wages would fall, over time, until the workers would have no choice but to overthrow the system. Can anyone tell in which book/essay he actually made this prediction?

What I don't like about Diplomacy
Is that this is a zero-sum game. In order to win, you have to make other players lose. I, as an entrepreneur, libertarian and capitalist, find it particularly hard to see the behavior of people when they think they are playing a zero-sum game. Maybe this is why I take human behavior in the game so hard.

Voting Strategy
With the current political landscape, I am facing the very real possibility of the two main candidates being, in my opinion, pretty awful. I have had numerous discussions with friends over the strategy, but I bring it to you. Is it worth it to vote on principle? Should I vote third party if I think they are the best candidate? Or do I vote for the lesser of two evils among the big two?

not ready setting
Hello, I'm a newbie here. I am curious. If I put in some orders, save them and click the ready button, my orders are in and everything is great. Later, I go and click not ready. My previous orders were in and now I am changing some of them. I fail to clock watch and the time to make my moves expires. Does the software progress with my first set of orders? Or does the software cause my power to go into Civil Disorder.

RECLAIM THE NIGHT
Women should feel and be safe walking in the streets every day and night. Sadly, this just isn't the case, all across the world. But once a year UK feminist groups hold a Reclaim the Night march across our cities. Tonight is that night, reclaiming the night for our mums, sisters, daughters, family and friends that just happen to be women.

To help reduce rape, the porn industry really needs to stop being supported. It's a tragedy of our generation. It feeds the mindset down an unhealthy path, and objectifies people to be sexual objects.
In my opinion.
wjessop (100 DX)
01 Mar 16 UTC
I agree with your point about porn, Flum -- I'd like to hear though, in what way do you think the porn industry is being supported?
Fluminator (1500 D)
01 Mar 16 UTC
It's the complete acceptance of it. If the naked person is past a certain age, it suddenly goes from being taboo to being okay and not worth our time to go against.
It's more than just acceptance in my country. Our culture and places like Hollywood actively support it with some of the garbage they put out. *cough 50 shades *
It's sad because the industry makes so much money. Heck, it's what drove the development of the internet to have mainstream use outside the military. There needs to be some way to hurt funding, but as long as porn sites keep getting so many hits every day, I doubt there will be much we can do.
Octavious (2732 D)
01 Mar 16 UTC
Oh, if only we could go back to that golden age of freedom and equality that was the world before the internet.

A slightly unfair comment, perhaps, but I would like to see some evidence to back up the internet pornography attack.

Come to think of it, a few years back I knew a few people who paid for online porn. I am a little older now, admittedly, and less likely to be involved in that sort of conversation, but I now know no one who actually pays. The newspapers have shown us how difficult it is to generate money online from add revenue. I have no idea how the porn industry is still going.
Fluminator (1500 D)
01 Mar 16 UTC
I love the internet. I'm using it right now. Not sure what you're going for with that comment.

The porn industry is still going because there is enough demand for it to be very profitable. If you don't understand how it's still going, you probably underestimate it.
Octavious (2732 D)
01 Mar 16 UTC
I am going in the direction of knowing of not a single jot of evidence linking internet pornography to rape. The sexual object argument sounds good, but so does the argument that internet pornography allows potential rapists to vent their sexual frustrations harmlessly.

How is internet pornography very profitable? Where does the money come from?
Lethologica (203 D)

Subscriptions (for more/more specialized/higher-resolution content) and people without adblocker, probably.

Flum: instead of shaming sex and nudity more, maybe it would help if we stopped celebrating mayhem and violence so much.

I think people NEED the most similar possible thing to sexual satisfaction, so if they don't have another option, they'll watch porn. Wanna stop porn? offer them options.

Another point bout porn: girls watch porn too, and there are *a lot* of them, and still they don't go around willing to rape, so?
Fluminator (1500 D)
01 Mar 16 UTC
Just my opinion. Porn has been nothing but destructive in my experience and the people I talk to.

@Octavius: I don't really want to Google pornographic income on a school computer so I can't get the exact stats. It's very high though and a Google you can get a bunch of sources.

@trip: I agree we should stop celebrating violence. And? How does that relate?

@principiand. I had a witty response, but refrained from it because I didn't want to offend anyone more than I probably already have.

@Chaqa. Dancing is fun. How does it relate?

@flum, go ahead, I'm more interested than afraid of being offended (unless you think you'd offend someone else)
principians (881 D)

@bo_sox, more to my point (or whatever is said in english): they can rape, they are very frequently influenced by the same things that supposedly make men rape (like porn, as flum says), and still you have a big asymetry: you'll found much more raper men than raper women... why?
Lethologica (203 D)
02 Mar 16 UTC
@principians, someone who believed porn had a significant effect on such things would reply that 2/3 of the people who view porn are men, so the asymmetry is consistent with their belief.

I think porn does have some effect. But I think it's mostly a symptom of whatever the real causes are, and that its effect is largely through a feedback loop strengthening those causes. As a result, I think fighting porn itself is unlikely to yield noticeable results. I don't really know enough about the subject to say more, though.

Flum: America teaches girls that their naked bodies and sex are shameful while teaching boys nothing about sexuality and pumping them full of violence. I'm not an expert, so I can't say for sure that that set up leads directly to rapes when you puts those kids together at college, but it sure seems like a recipe for disaster. Im not suggesting that parents have their families go buff at home, but if kids could get some experience being in the presence of the opposite sex naked, in a responsible setting, I think it would help with having more respect and understanding between the sexes in the US.

The thing that comes to mind for me is a few months I spent in Finland as a teenager. Whole families and their friends and neighbors would get together for sauna and there was no hesitation, except with me, about being naked in front of each other. I would say as far as having a positive body image and understanding the other sex, their kids were years ahead of me. At the very least, that seems much more healthy than our current set up.
principians (881 D)

^interesting

And just to be clear, I'm not a fan of porn, but the reason has very little to do with rape, abuse, or sexism issues

orathaic (1009 D(B))

There is a taboo when it comes to talking about sex, the conversation from traditional/ conservative people is sex negative; as such respectable people don't talk about. What is left is only thise who are not respectable but willing to actually have the conversation. Advertisers and pornographers use sex to sell, but their motives do not align with healthy atttudes towards sex. Advertisers put sex up on a pedestal, ab object of the greatest desire and social status. Pornograpers specifically cater to their audience's arousal.

We need sex positive conversations, in public. Healthy model behaviours for kids to learn from. If you believe that sex should only occur in a committed marriage, then show the advantages of that kind of relationship - you almost need to compete directly with porn.

Where holland has 'sleep overs' with teenage kids, so they can have sex with their parent's knowledge and support, you can see a healthy attitude towards sex. Something largely absent in other cultures. I can only conpare to alcohol, by merely prohibiting it, teens don't learn to use it responcibly. They learn with their peers who know no hetter. Parents should encourage responcible attitudes to drinking at home with their teens.

Trying to limit porn merely perpetuates the same sex negative attitudes which got us here in the first place. We need to normalize it, (as normal as talking about drinking or gambling) talk to your kids, talk to your friends.

Take it down off the pedestal and talk about reality.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
02 Mar 16 UTC
@principians ... you explicitly said that girls don't rape. When I call you out on it, you can't say that that wasn't your point.

To add onto ora's statement, if you are a parent and think that forbidding your kid from engaging in something (sex, drugs, alcohol, whatever) is going to prevent them from trying things and experimenting, you're delusional. It does the exact opposite.
principians (881 D)
02 Mar 16 UTC
Sorry bo, I should have added a 'most' before a 'girls' somewhere, but you din't exactly answer 'yes they do'.... whatever
KingCyrus (511 D)

Well, most males don't rape either.

I'll say this again, in my personal experience, I have encountered more females attempting to commit sexual abuse than men. I think men are much more prone to more violent sexual transgressions, but I think girls are just as likely to have a drunk hookup (where the guy is more out of it than her). I think the statistics are one in six (reported) among men in college as opposed to one in four (reported) among women. Both those numbers are astoundingly high, but I would guess less males report than females as well.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
02 Mar 16 UTC
The cultural difference is that a drunk hookup where the guy is totally gone is considered a win and all his friends applaud him whereas for a girl it's a rush to CVS at 8 AM the next morning to pick up a pill she can't afford and then never talk about it again. The huge assumption when it comes to a guy is that he enjoyed it and could have stopped it if he wanted to (neither are necessarily true) and guys a) are never introduced to the idea that they *can* take action if they were raped, b) sometimes don't even know enough about what rape means to determine if they were raped, and c) are ridiculed endlessly by their peers and the authorities if they report it.
Lethologica (203 D)
02 Mar 16 UTC
Without commenting on the truth or falsehood of bo's comments, many women don't recognize (or, perhaps, agree) that they were raped either; in this USDOJ survey, slightly less than half of the women who described behaviors classified as rape actually described the incident as such when asked.
