Autro-German Alliance: The Anschluss
I can think of two times, at least, when this alliance has really killed me (or could have). Still though, I have no idea how to arrange this one and hold it together. What are your thoughts/ experiences about this particular alliance?
Okay, so how does one form. It seems to me that the beginning is innocuous. Austria and Germany almost ignore each other as they establish themselves along separate lines.

Here is one beautiful Anschluss.
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=169926#gamePanel
I should totally have been killed off in this one. I actually jumped in (as England) to save Germany. This was a result of press from Austria warning me of the dangers Russia posed to both of us. I played my part well, and was literally shocked when Germany got back on his feet and opted (it appeared to me) to favor Austria over my alliance. Germany became very concerned about my chances for a solo & (I thought) hooked me into committing troops in the north that I could have put to better use in the south

Austria for his part, made me believe at one point that he had reconsidered hitting Italy. This caused me to hold off for a turn that proved to be pivotal in his conquest of Italy.

All of this ended up with me feverishly trying to hold two forces off with the sinking feeling that I was just one or two units shy of what I needed to hold off The Anschluss.

I'm not sure that's a natural AG alliance and it's just a matter of fact based on board development
When I'm Austria, I find the alliance with Germany is the only one I can count on through to the endgame is the alliance with Germany. Turkey's and Russia's paths to victory are through Austria, and Italian relations usually devolve from the neighbouring home SCs.

Austria proposed an Anschluss to my Germany once, so I made sure I was generous to him and that he was in enough trouble to want my armies around..

And then I took all of Austria in two years.
That's what I call an Anschluss.

Is the assumption in an Anschluss that Germany gets Warsaw and Moscow? I would find that a bitter pill as Austria, especially in the mid game. I think it leaves Austria with the harder work to do, building fleets and subjugating the natural naval powers of the Mediterranean while Germany can easily field a large and successful army.

(Obviously the diplomatic specifics of the game dictate whether it works - Germany could get pounded by E-F-R - I just think Germany's task would be easier tactically.)

I wonder how likely a solo is with the Anschluss intact? I'm guessing almost nil, unless one of the partners has been seriously checked, Austria by Turkey or Germany by England for example... a little brother is always helpful in the end game. But the German-Austrian home centers are so close and in such strategic places along the stalemate lines that the alliance is sure to fall apart when it succeeds.

This is a good alliance in order to enable both powers to stay alive (because they watch each other's backs) but I've always found it difficult for these two powers to actively help each other. usually both are two busy dealing with enemies in opposite directions.
I actually find a German/Italian alliance to be a bit more practical and helpful.
@ishirkmywork

That is where I was hoping to head with this. I have seen lots of study on strategies for single countries and their strengths and weaknesses. I don't recall much about specific alliances, although I am sure we have done it.

I agree about it being a good defensive alliance, both countries have a much needed border abut which they don't have to worry. Still with most players that's as far as it goes. The central location of both of these countries makes them powerful in the endgame though. Between them, they are able to bring armies to bear easily on Russia and Italy. France is a little harder as is Turkey. The only nation truly safe from them (unless Germany has built a sizable fleet) is England.
So it seems like the first phase of the Anschluss is to play the normal "let's sit on a dmz and ignore each other while Germany sorts out the north & sees if Austria survives the south."

Most likely Austria plays out the beginnings of a Lepanto. Germany may play out a Western Triple or Anglo-Saxon? Weakening Russia would be a big part of the strategy in the early game to reduce the danger of a Juggernaut since that develops faster and a successful one kills Austria off quickly.

A western triple is a good ruse for Germany because England can be strung out in the north and Italy can be induced to over extend going after Italy.

Yes, if they are both able to strike out on their owns, they are a powerful endgame alliance -- but in the meantime, where are they going to help each other make gains? Warsaw is really the only option for help, and Austria will have to feel pretty good about its relationship with turkey to make that happen. If Germany is to provide any help against Italy for Austria, his northern borders will be ripe for plunder from France and England.
In my opinion, a practical early game alliance needs to enable 3+ builds for each side of the alliance, and I've just never seen that happen. As Germany, I did manage to stay allied with Austria the entire game once, but the end result was Germany 5 SCs, Austria 18. So other than warm feelings of loyalty, that didn't really work out though....
Now a german italian alliance.....that one is really cooking with gas I think. Love it.

Fleets are so important for Germany. I prefer to have more fleets than armies as germany on the board at all times. Without fleets, Germany gets swarmed eventually.
Actually, I think that is why that Anschluss is powerful. The two powers rely on alliances with other powers early on. Between them Austria and Germany have to exchange press with everybody on the board. Thus between them they can get a pretty good idea of the alliances and strategies at play. Exchanging that information is useful. It's a deceptive alliance because it stays in the background with both partners having pre-arranged short term alliances with other powers. An alliance with Italy usually gets Austria thorough the first few years & any number of alliances can get Germany into a good position in the mid-game. It isn't until later in the game that these countries find out the true allegiance of their early allies.

It is great if you can get to that place, for sure. Although, a strong Austria in the late game has a much better shot at 18 then Germany does, I think. He can just keep pumping out armies, and Germany has to do a bit more convoying and fleet support, plus that Munich/Alps choke point slows things down.
I suppose Austria has a similar problem rooting Turkey off it's peninsula.....
Anyway, fun to think about. Good advice and thoughts everyone.
I agree with Crazy Anglican's views. It's a great alliance to have a secure backside and a good communication partner, but beyond that, it's necessary to have other alliances to work with.
I don't think either partner really benefits for the alliance in particular, as their success is more dependent on doing well in their triangle.

...worked out well for you last time we played Falcon :-)
Very true, which has to do with success through other alliances.

I don't think the A/G intrinsically favors one party or the other, but instead depends on who does better in their respective spheres (east/west). In fact, unless both parties are jointly attacking Russia or (rarely) Italy, I hesitate to call it an "alliance." More a DMZ marked by long-range strategic distrust. Both countries well be massing armies and looking to cross the stalemate line around Munich at the right time for a solo bid.

The assumption that Germany and Austria must work together is quite short-sighted; but very common. All that you really get is one secure flank - now, that's all well and good, but unless you're in a CPA, it's not going to last. In the midgame, if Austria comes out strong, then they're likely to be invading Germany regardless.

That's why I'm such a fan of an early German invasion of Austria. You know that you're probably going to be fighting anyway - so why wait until Austria has the advantage? An S01 move to Tyrolia is a calculated risk that can be great with a friendly France, but without one, 1902 into Tyrolia to support an Italian invasion of Austria is great. If you combine that with a GR or an EG, then you have a very powerful triple alliance, where the two peripherals aren't of much use to each other, so you can divide and conquer more easily later on.

I personally think a strong Italy is far more a requirement for a strong Germany than a strong Austria is. If Italy falters then either:

A) France is going to be unopposed in the first half of the Med, and possibly at all. Bad
B) Austria is going to be unopposed when he invades you in 1903/4. Bad.
C) Turkey is going to spring out early and get going well before you're in any position to beat him to a solo. Bad again!

So get the G/I going early, and get your communication going with him. If you want to bring Austria in and CPA - fine. There's actually a goal there. But just as an A/G... it's just something that buys time. And the country that gains most from having time bought is Austria, not Germany.
