Does 0.9999..... = 1?
I had this debate with a friend. He insists it does. I do not believe it does. What does everyone here believe? (and yes, he already showed me the limits and such)

Diplomacy Lord of the Rings
Are there any plans for someone to release a webdiplomacy map
that is modeled after the LOTR or Game of Thrones map?
It would be sweeet.
Who do we message to create it??

just joined up! I have questions!
I just joined. Looks good, but I have a few questions I haven't found answers to yet. One, I started a new game, cool. But how do I know which nation I am playing?

I don't think you do until the start of the game in which case you will be randomly given one.

@fourofswords I'm trying to start a game with new players to the site, your more then welcome to join if you like. I won't create it until I have all the players.

You can create the game now with a password, that will enable you to vet potential players before sending them the password (via private message).

Enjoy your game.

Haha why is that?
diplomat61 (223 D)

Please ignore Jeff, he is greedy.

IMHO PPSC is a good scoring system, especially for new players, because it gives those who play well enough to at least survive a share of the points. I think this reduces the chances of newish players going NMR because they have no hope of winning.

All it does is teach bad habit and bad philosophy. You get plenty of points for drawing. Purposely losing shouldn't be awarded points which is what PPSC does.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
07 Oct 15 UTC
WTA is the way the original game was intended to be played.

Newbies get points refreshed, so go all in!
Steel yourself for battle, and Play To Win!

Winner Takes All with Draws Include All Survivors Equally is literally from the Rulebook.
happyplayer (130 D)
07 Oct 15 UTC
I can see we have a diversity in opinions. Personally either is acceptable to me. I'll probably stick with PPSC for the first few games and then move on to some WTA games.

*sigh* Valis is greedy too.

The original game was intended to be played face to face but Jeff & Valis are both happy to play online. As yet, neither has countered my point about WTA encouraging players going CD (that is consecutive NMR's)*.

*Can we get an analysis of players going CD in PPSC vs WTA? That would help settle this ongoing argument.
IshmaelGuantanamoIV (100 D)

That is a sound choice, but play every game as if it is a WTA. Play as if an opponent's solo is the worst possible option.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
07 Oct 15 UTC

Realize that most games end in draws anyway. Winning outright is very hard in WTA.

It's easier to "win" in PPSC because of cheap "strong second" alliances where two people roll the table but only one actually gets the victory. Bad philosophy which spawns bad habits. PPSC is an abomination and will adversely affect your WTA gameplay.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
07 Oct 15 UTC
WTA discourages players who are sufficiently willful to stick around and fight for a draw.

PPSC encourages players to leave--once they see the Top Two alliance, they realize it is hopeless to win. Fighting over scraps is for dogs.
WTA does not cause players to CD anymore than PPSC does, because draws are the same for each. Any player with even 1SC at the end participates in the draw with an equal share of the pot.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

WTA *encourages....
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
07 Oct 15 UTC
One thing we all probably agree on, only play the Classic or Ancient Mediterranean maps until you are familiar with the game online. It takes time to monitor your games and sometimes new players have to adjust to being as diligent as necessary.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
07 Oct 15 UTC
And those two maps are smallest so games end more quickly in general.
diplomat61 (223 D)

+1 Ishmael, it is how I play PPSC also.

+1ish Jeff, I get offered 3 way draws when there is still a lot to play for. In my view a draw is only an acceptable result when two sides are facing off across a stalemate line (or unless I am doing badly and someone who is doing better is stupid enough to make the offer).
diplomat61 (223 D)
07 Oct 15 UTC
+1ish (again) Jeff on maps. I would go a step a further and recommend Classic only. To me AM is a bit artificial with five players in a circle; that creates certain tensions which boil down to "do I ally with the guy only left or my right?".
diplomat61 (223 D)
07 Oct 15 UTC
I think you can make reasonable arguments for & against whether WTA or PPSC leads to more CD's, which is why I would love to see hard stats.
happyplayer (130 D)
07 Oct 15 UTC
I would imagine AM would make a fun 5min phase game.
diplomat61 (223 D)
07 Oct 15 UTC
Because AM geographically is quite balanced between all five players it tends to emphasise good diplomatic skills (Diplomacy is full of contrasts like these).

You can have fun with both maps as a 5min gunboat game (i.e. no messaging between players). It is a good way for learning the positions on the board without worrying much about diplomacy.

I'm an old fart. Playing for over 40 years.

PPSC really sucks. It is not the way the game was designed. In the rules, the object is to win, or draw with an equal split. I'm new here and don't know how PPSC was introduced. Would be interested in a history lesson.

I find players here are too quick to draw. Most of the time draws are suggested when the game is just getting interesting.

I always play to win. I draw when faced with a stalemate line, or I deem my position inferior.

+1 BOG on the readiness to draw (but therein lies an opportunity: the young whippersnappers don't see the stab coming ... happy days)

Stephenie Meyer rewrote Twilight with a twist!
She rewrote the books with every character being gender swapped.
Now you can re-enjoy the classic in a new perspective with old female vampires and werewolves and a young teenage guy. What a brilliant idea and good use of your time! Meyers truly does keep on giving gifts to humankind.

Dealing with emotions following a good stab
Whenever someone stabs me in the game, I have a lot of negative emotions about it, to the point that I would choke this person, if I had the chance.

How do you deal with such emotions? How do you deal with stabs?

First Tournament (Tempest in a Teapot)
So the Tempest in a Teapot tournament is happening this weekend. I believe that Valis and TheCaptain will be there, will anyone else be joining us? This will be my first Diplomacy Tournament (and first real F2F experience) so I am excited and horrified at the same time. Any tips for me are appreciated.

I look forward to meeting all who attend!

Bugs in live games - countdown don't show real time
Hey guys

Lately I've experienced a bug, and I wonder if I'm the only one. When in a live game, everytime it's another phase, the time have already gone almost a minute, and sometimes, the timer can say I have 15-20 seconds left to do a move, but the game have already moved on to the next phase. Am I the only one experiencing this?
