Does 0.9999..... = 1?
I had this debate with a friend. He insists it does. I do not believe it does. What does everyone here believe? (and yes, he already showed me the limits and such)

Diplomacy Lord of the Rings
Are there any plans for someone to release a webdiplomacy map
that is modeled after the LOTR or Game of Thrones map?
It would be sweeet.
Who do we message to create it??

I just joined. Looks good, but I have a few questions I haven't found answers to yet. One, I started a new game, cool. But how do I know which nation I am playing?

Stephenie Meyer rewrote Twilight with a twist!
She rewrote the books with every character being gender swapped.
Now you can re-enjoy the classic in a new perspective with old female vampires and werewolves and a young teenage guy. What a brilliant idea and good use of your time! Meyers truly does keep on giving gifts to humankind.

Dealing with emotions following a good stab
Whenever someone stabs me in the game, I have a lot of negative emotions about it, to the point that I would choke this person, if I had the chance.

How do you deal with such emotions? How do you deal with stabs?
principians (881 D)

To allow others stabbing you is your first error. I mean, usually you should not lower your guard in the first place. If you are to lower your guard, it's because you've rationally analyzed and convinced yourself that it's not in the interest of your ally to stab you. And if you fail in that analyisis your first reaction should be to blame yourself for that fail.

Destroy them. Hunt them in the forums, hunt them in the public games, and crush them into the earth and sew their bodies with salt so that they will never rise again.

@Principians, of course that I am the blame. The question is not whom to blame, but how do you deal with the emotions.

My emotions at being stabbed tend to vary from amusement to mild relief that an annoyingly complicated situation has just become a lot simpler. Very rarely am I annoyed. Being annoyed just gets in the way of enjoying the fight.

I usually don´t do anything in the moment I see the stab. I use to wait a bit to not get emotional and try to analise why the stab happened and what to do next. This is game and stabs are part of the game, don´t take it personally is the first thing to do and learning from this is the second and most important one I think.
To be honest, I don´t get angry with a good stab, like principians wrote, a good stab is your fault to give your opponent this chance I get more angry with stupid stabs that will hurt both you and the stabber in the long run, but in this case I also blame me for not communicating well enough to show this to the other player.
Gunboats are another thing, but then someone could tell that there is no real "stab" in gunboat games.

You could do what one of my opponents did: carry it through to next game. It took me several turns to get to the bottom of why he was accusing me of lying. which I hadn't in that game.

For me it's either "you got me - but I will take you down with me" (or die trying) or "seriously? not only are you a traitor but a bad one as well". Bad stabs tend to irritate me more as they tend to be purely destructive in nature.

Well, mostly I try to leave myself with enough defense to have a shot at planning a defense. It isn't uncommon that I come out on top after a stab

Also if you can be upset by betrayal, you obviously shouldn't get upset, but it seems to me that you've already made the mistake of caring too much about your allies in the first place. If you don't care about them, I can't imagine you get that upset.

I'm more with rdrivera on this one, though I tend to be a bit more hotheaded in my response :)

A good stab and I'll message the player saying "Well done, it was a pleasure. How can I be your minion and make your life easier?" I'm not bothered by it all that much and blame myself.

A bad stab, and I'll get *really* mad. That's when I tend to do the wrong thing and bombard the player with not-so-nice messages about how stupid and short-sighted they are, then go into detail about why their plan will fail. I'll emphasize that this is the *wrong* response to have, and that I don't handle it well.

In short, if I'm gonna be fucked, I want it to be a good fuck. I don't want to be part of some sick human centipede where the person fucking me is getting fucked themselves in the process.

Hehe, +1 rdrivera and goldfinger.

But yeah. Take a breath, walk away from the game for a minute, count backwards from five. Then look at the board and pretend it's gunboat, see what you could theoretically salvage from the situation. Then start talking and see if you can make it happen.

I'm with Jamiet on this one. Distract yourself with something else. Then come back to the game with a better, more positive attitude. If it's a good stab, there's nothing you can do be better.

There are many good responses here to the question. Myself, I remember the principle that the mind and body function well enough without being pushed or forced. in this case this means that without anger and without effort your natural instincts will help you deal with that player better in the future and the next thing you know your knife will be firmly be placed in his or her back.

First Tournament (Tempest in a Teapot)
So the Tempest in a Teapot tournament is happening this weekend. I believe that Valis and TheCaptain will be there, will anyone else be joining us? This will be my first Diplomacy Tournament (and first real F2F experience) so I am excited and horrified at the same time. Any tips for me are appreciated.

I look forward to meeting all who attend!

Bugs in live games - countdown don't show real time
Hey guys

Lately I've experienced a bug, and I wonder if I'm the only one. When in a live game, everytime it's another phase, the time have already gone almost a minute, and sometimes, the timer can say I have 15-20 seconds left to do a move, but the game have already moved on to the next phase. Am I the only one experiencing this?
