I didn't have a problem with the draw based scoring system per se, but it was problematic in combination with the time limit. Two of my games had the final two phases turn into public press trying to eliminate a four center power in two turns. It was kind of fun the first time, especially when I was a one center draw, but the second and third times got a bit old. As soon as the time limit was announced (two years left after the end of the current phase) endgames turned purely academic - simply a matter of luck if you were in a strong enough position not to be eliminated. For the last two years, there really wasn't any diplomacy to speak of, for the most part.

I had a great time and have no ill will toward the scoring system, especially if you're silly enough to end a game with a 14 center England in a 7 way draw, doubly so considering I was a beneficiary of the draw system in my first game. The end of my first game, though, felt more like I hit a halfcourt shot as time expired rather than a true ending to a game of Dip.

Not quite sure how you can balance time restrictions with rewarding center count. Maybe start off with shorter phases and a time restriction on builds and retreats?

2nd hits the nail in the head. The issue isn't the scoring system. The issue is that time limitations prevented us from playing games through. Perhaps this can be addressed
Valis2501 (3247 D (G))

There's two current solutions I know of:
1) Play one game per day so you have 14 hours to play rather than 7 (that includes logistics, meals, etc) [obvious drawbacks for obvious benefits]
2) Decrease time/phase a third time, for example, 18/16 through 04, 15/13 through 08, 12/10 through 14 or end. [much slighter drawbacks, but people might respond very negatively to the short time per phase, especially with drop dead timing and retreats/builds/adjudication making each phase effectively only 5 min at MOST]
2.5) Play a different scoring system
Valis2501 (3247 D (G))
24 Aug 15 UTC
whoops, forgot to list
2.75) Not DIAS
The scoring system introduced a "game-within-a-game". The whole game felt to me like a game of diplomacy is supposed to feel. Alliances made, alliances broken, all that. Then in the last year it's a tactical exercise of the larger powers eliminating the smaller powers, and the small guys trying to stay at 1. I actually enjoyed the ending to my second game with Tom & Jack trying to kick me from 5 to 0 in one year. But I can see how it gets old quickly.
bo_sox48 (4926 D Mod (G))
24 Aug 15 UTC
That's the thing, in a draw-based system, alliances should never have broken unless in pursuit of a solo. I don't know why anyone stabbed an ally at all in the early years other than to simply do something.
Valis2501 (3247 D (G))
24 Aug 15 UTC
Well I mean the difficulty is finding out who is actually your ally.
bo_sox48 (4926 D Mod (G))
24 Aug 15 UTC
That's the thing, theoretically, in a draw based system, everyone should be willing to ally with everyone and only in order to cut people out of said draw should people stab. So, in other words, everyone who feels safe that they are in position to remain in the draw should be allied with anyone who they feel should stay in the draw.

Obviously, we didn't play that way. That would be awfully boring.
Valis2501 (3247 D (G))
24 Aug 15 UTC
There were also a set of people who had to kill me coming into the last round which throws another wrench into the board dynamics.
@bo_sox (about the last game): I find that hard to believe. Your motives seemed less calculated than that. The phrases "I don't care about the tournament, I just wanna have fun" and "I just like to see the look on your face" spring to mind.

When I proposed a 7-way draw two years before the game ended, you immediately veto-ed. The draw proposal in the last year was anonymous, so we'll never know what you voted, and it also doesn't really matter. What I don't get is this:

If you didn't want a 7-way draw in 1909, why didn't you either try to cut out France to reduce the draw, or stab Germany that turn to attempt a solo? In fact, both of those goals represent the same set of moves: take Paris, Marseilles and Denmark. You'd be at 14 with one year to go. You might have gotten the solo if people were ready to throw to you (I'm sure Jay and Alex would be, I don't know about Carl). Or if it became clear that you weren't going to make it, we'd have easily been able to take out Jay, Jack, Emily and Alex in 1911 and get a three-way after all. The way you played it Alex remained at 5 centers and I figured Jay, Jack and Emily all deserved to draw way more than him (or Carl for that matter).

Personally, I found it hilarious when bo waived 3 builds.
Valis2501 (3247 D (G))
25 Aug 15 UTC
bas, make sure to explain to uclabb why bo was ensured to solo once we start the redux game.
He had four builds. If you're gonna waive one of them, might as well waive them all? :p

I'm not saying bo was ensured a solo. But there was a non-negligible chance, and reducing Alex (France) to 2 would put him in elimination range, increasing the chance for a three-way. I cannot conceive of any argument to not stab Alex and Carl in 1909. Except "I don't care about the tournament, I just wanna have fun" and "I just like to see the look on your face".

Tournament Report:

In the first game I was England and I got up to 9 fleets, 0 armies. I took a center to build a fleet, then gave it back willingly to disband the armies. Sometimes it's fun going for silly strategies. Although as England it's not so silly. Couldn't make it past France but still did well.

I don't remember too much. It was classic playing-for-a-draw England where I closed as many Northern ports that I could from STP to DEN/KIE/BER to (unsuccessfully/eventually) BRE and made unbreakable fleet lines.

I got a 3-build turn that was nice, Russia eventually forgave me so much that I forgot I stabbed them at all until they quickly reminded me in the end of game recap when I posited otherwise.

I13/E9/F6/R6 4WD.
------------------------

In the second game I was France myself and got into a nice Western Triple with a very new German player who we eventually cut out. He did three really weird things.
1) Insisted on F KIE-HOL in S01. Wouldn't consider anything else. Now, it was obvious he wanted to try a GR alliance and R convinced him of it.
2) Asked for a bounce in Burgundy. Any good Germany player doesn't want a bounce in Burgundy (IMO). However he asked for one! I was all too happy to oblige.
3) Didn't ask for Beligum, in fact didn't put any fight up to England taking it. This is just inexperience IMO. A WT G needs that buffer and extra power for both his 12 and his 6.

Between (1) and (2) and (3) it was quite clear to England and I that we eventually would cut him out. It was only a matter of time. The first couple years are relatively quite.

Things however got very interesting! Imagine these German moves:
F03 MUN-BUR
S04 BUR-PAR

Now, the whole time I had absolutely nothing on my mainland, as I was going 100% ham on Italy (bo_sox). I had something like
A TUN
F GOL
F WES
F TYRR
A PIE

Italy was quite confident he had me on the ropes now. Germany was in Paris, I had not a single unit on my mainland and nothing I could do about it.

German orders F04:
PAR-BUR

There was much crying and gnashing of teeth that I could convince Germany to walk right back out of Paris, but, then again, that's why they call it "Diplomacy"!

Even then, I fought hard for England not to stab Germany until absolutely necessary, as my progress in the south was slow and I didn't want England getting too big. Eventually the EF teamed up with Austria to take out G and T and I 3-way drew with people who got a 5-way draw or worse first round, where I got a 4-way draw last round, putting me in the tournament lead after the second of three rounds.

E13/F11/A10 3WD
------------------------
As somewhat mentioned above, going into the final round in the lead was nerve-wracking. . On one hand you wanna come up from behind and not have a target on your back, but it's not like I could or would do purposely worse just to hope to do very well on the last round. Unlike SOME people here I can't just skip games and still win tournaments wink emoticon

I got Russia for my third game. One of my favorites, but as someone who recently destroyed and got destroyed as Russia at DipCon 2 weeks ago, I was pretty apprehensive.

Italy was a new player, Turkey was a good player, Austria was a good player who was in contention for the tournament win, Germany was a good player who was in contention for the tournament win, France was a good player who probably had no idea what his score was, and England missed a round the day before and I knew he almost never changed his mind from 01.

The moment I knew I had a shot at winning was S01
S01:
me to G/F: You should Sea Lion. I'll open North
me to E: "They're gonna Sea Lion. Listen to Chris Martin my man". (http://diplom.org/Zine/S2003M/Martin/London.html) (These were my actual words)

F01:
Of course everyone does exactly what I knew/told about their moves.
E to me: My units are yours, fuck F/G. Take NWY.
me to E: Let's kill G first

The moment I knew I won (assuming I drew at at least N-1 way of the other board) was in S04 when:
me to F: You don't want E suiciding into you, let's suicide him into Germany, he'll forgive you more if you ask for it. Germany is getting large and is super aggressive about him getting all the growth.
F to me: OK

That's when I won. At least partially, I like to think, of my own design. I all but literally wrote France and England's orders the rest of the game that were relevant to the North and/or taking out Germany (poor Randy L-H), until the final year.

I was keeping slight tabs on the other boards. As long as I got a 5WD they would need a 3WD, if I got a 4WD, they would need a 3WD and more centers than me.

Fun fact: the other board eventually had a 7-way draw.

Being fairly complacent, I made a stalemate line at STP with FIN/STP against the Austrian armies. I kept trying to ally with Austria but he had to eliminate me to place above me so it never happened, but I gave up the entirity of my southern power and kept STP/NWY/DEN/SWE.

I mentioned earlier about a Sea Lion against England. And how it wasn't really till 1904 that France stabbed Germany. So England was very much on the ropes. I controlled EDI. France controlled LON. England only owned an army in YOR and a supply center in LVP.

I convinced France that we should use England constructively. We convoyed him against Germany. Eventually he got a build, and I convinced him to build another army, which we convoyed against Germany again. Eventually he got a *third* build, being in something like Holland and Berlin. The whole time I own the EDI supply center and convince him not to take it. He takes it back maybe 5 years later, as an agreement, which I'm fine with per below of using him as a buffer against France.

At this point, I'm loving it. England will never ever attack me due to my loyalty and friendship to him this game. and now that Germany is dead or about to be dead, the only person who can get to me with any strength is France, so I want England to be strong enough to hold him off as an obstruction if France decides to get competitive all of the sudden.

It turns out that even with a last ditch effort to kill England, they can't even do that , much in part to the fact I refuse to go after him until the final year, and I just sit in NWY/DEN/STP/FIN holding my line.

A somewhat fun moment from the tournament:

I had 8 fleets as England. I had my army disbanded a while ago. Armies are for losers.
Last turn of the game before it's forced drawn due to time. I've been holding a stalemate line against the strong France. Unbreakable.
Because it's the last year I change my orders to try some last ditch attempts at dots for tie-breaker purposes. I did this twice in the tournament, and I felt terrible afterwards. Anyways, I submit my orders and ask if anyone minds readying up.

France takes his orders out of the box, rewrites them, and asks if that matters.
I say "no, of course not, I have a stalemate line"
But I spend the next two minutes looking at the board trying to figure out what the fuck he can do to me. I'm absolutely at a lost. After holding up the game a couple minutes, I decide I'm making no forward progress on figuring out France's moves.

Eventually I just say "fuck it" and ready up.

I'm reading. I read my orders. I set up my one-dot of Russia, attempt a play at Belgium, etc.

I get to France's orders.
He had crossed off his stalemate orders and re-wrote them. Exactly the same as the top of the page.

Everyone had a good laugh at me, both my exasperation and confusion beforehand at what he could possibly be ordering against my stalemate line, and my exasperation when I learned what happened

I'm designing a board game and wondering about the production side..
I can't produce everything myself of course, but I do want to have as much control as possible and make it 'my' enterprise rather than giving the design to someone who takes care of everything while I'm getting a part of the profit.
I do need some professional stuff to really get it off the ground, though. No clue how to go about this. Approach the nearest board game store and get information there?

Why do people draw so early?
I'm curious to learn y'all's opinion about putting up a draw vote very early on in a game. I especially see this in WTA gunboats, but I've also seen it elsewhere a lot too, where 1902/1903 - 5 or 6 of the players are already voting draw, before the game has even had a chance to develop. (okay admittedly I did the same thing in the last gunboat I played, but that's just 'cuz I drew Italy and I hate Italy).
