Philosophical Books
I am getting more and more interested into philosophy and things of that nature. Does anybody have any good recommendations for a good read about philosophy or anything related to it?

Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, maybe the Hagakure too. Two of my favorites. What kind of philosophy are you into? You're asking quite the broad question.

Well as I am just beginning to dive into it, I am not too sure bo. I like types that talk about serving a greater good or how to better oneself or definitely types that talk about the problems of society and why it will all collapse.

Thank you all for your input so far, by the way. It is much appreciated.

I mean, the books recommended here are Philosophical in nature or genre, but it seems it would be best for you to pick up an Intro to Philosophy textbook at your local college bookstore. But maybe it's my academia leaking.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
16 Aug 15 UTC
Nah, I'm with Valis. The academic piece of philosophy is just as valuable as engaging in philosophy, particularly when it comes to logic.
OB_Gyn_Kenobi (888 D)
16 Aug 15 UTC
I wouldn't call an Intro to Philosophy textbook a "good read". Rather, it sounds like a "dry read" for someone who is just getting into the subject. Have a little fun with your new-found interest before killing your enthusiasm with a clinical discussion of it from an academic's viewpoint.

I agree with Kenobi. Academic texts might be a harder starting point for something like philosophy. Nothing wrong with starting out on something lighter.

All Things Shining by Dreyfus and Kelley is another that comes to mind.

+1 for Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Great book with some a deeply personal tale that ALSO serves as a good primer for Western philosophy.

Another good survey book is The Wisdom of the West by Bertrand Russell.

Robert Nozick is fantastic about the spirit of questioning. I recommend starting with his book The Examined Life. His book on political philosophy, Anarchy, State, and Utopia is also infused with the ability to ask interesting questions.

If you have a background in science, programming or music, I would also look into the stuff by Douglas Hofstadler. I think I'd start with I am a Strange Loop, but his magnum opus is Godel, Escher, Bach.

Despite his reputation, I find Foucault easy to understand. Look into Discipline and Punish.

The Book by Alan Watts gives you a good portal into Eastern thinking.

Hard to leave out Nietzsche. I would start with Beyond Good and Evil, but you can also cut your teeth on The Birth of Tragedy.

Just start with reading Plato. The complete Western philosophy of the last ~2,500 years did the same.

If you want a nice overview of philosophers from Socrates up to the American John Dewey, then 'The Story of Philosophy: The Lives and Opinions of the World's Greatest Philosophers' by Will Durant would be a good read.

+1 for Alan Watts. There's lots of youtube stuff of his you can listen to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFnYw5i29Ko

-1 For any large heavy serious 'classic' works of philosophy. But if you want a good laugh try reading a couple of pages of Heidegger.

If you want a nice easy and fun intro to philosophy I highly recommend Alain De Bottons 'Consolations of Philosophy' paperback.

I can't stress enough that you should always enjoy your philosophy study. If you're not enjoying it and/or not learning anything that seems helpful than you are studying the wrong stuff. Philosophy means love of wisdom, and the purpose of wisdom is to help you live a good and happy life, so it goes against the point if you make yourself miserable.

Personal favorites are Montaigne, Schopenhauer, and Epicurus. They all make me happy and feel enlightened at the same time.

Why do people draw so early?
I'm curious to learn y'all's opinion about putting up a draw vote very early on in a game. I especially see this in WTA gunboats, but I've also seen it elsewhere a lot too, where 1902/1903 - 5 or 6 of the players are already voting draw, before the game has even had a chance to develop. (okay admittedly I did the same thing in the last gunboat I played, but that's just 'cuz I drew Italy and I hate Italy).

CD Take-over
When you take over a country in civil disorder, can you put in orders for the current phase? Or do you have to wait for the current phase to end before actually taking over?

i.e. country CDs right away, I take it over in Spring 1902. Can I enter orders for the spring?

Help the noob
I am in my first game and need a clarification. The setting was for 1 day/phase. The first phase is coming to a close. Is that just the diplomacy phase and then I will have another day to get my orders in - or - do orders have to be in at the end of the first phase.

Sorry for the noob question but I have searched the site and could not find the answer.

New player looking for advice
As someone who's never played Diplomacy before, I don't really want to join a game that's already in progress, being unable to gauge its position. At the same time, if I start a game that I want to say is 'for noobs' then a bunch of people will join it and destroy everyone else. There also aren't any starting-up games which will accept me as a brand-new player. Which approach is better for getting started: picking up games in progress, or starting my own games?

Hoping for a love child from webDiplomacy and Backstabbr
I just started playing online for the first time since the Diplomacy Judge days, and have a couple games here and a couple games at Backstabbr. I love the features here, but the UI for Backstabbr is far nicer (in the sense that it's easier to tell what's happening on the board). Any chance the developers here would work on a cleaner UI inspired by Backstabbr? Do others agree that the webDiplomacy UI could be improved?
