I'm working on some statistics reporting for webdip, and I'm interested in what the forum thinks: Are "Gunboat" games just games with no messaging, or are they games with no messaging that are also anonymous?

While Gunboat games are often Anonymous, it is clearly not a requirement.

They are abominations.

ssorenn: That's a good suggestion, but unfortunately the database has no entry for "abominations", so I can't use that to filter games.

Gunboat = no messaging, publicly or privately
Anonymous = game in which players are not publicly identified until its conclusion

Two separate, entirely independent entries.

Yup. Gunboat = "no press".

I can't believe you people. Gunboats are, by history and definition, anon. That's why the idea of a "Reputation gunboat" where people were non-anon is a novel/fun thing.

Anon isn't "technically required" the same way that "no in-game messagining" isn't technically required. Gunboat is where press isn't allowed, not where press is disabled. (Gunboats used to be played on honor system before No In-game Messaging was programmed for those wondering where I get this precedent. ) I mean, I think it's pretty clear that Gunboat means anon AND no-press. Non-anon with no press is a clear exception that proves the rule when it's done for novelty.

It's a good thing this site doesn't have -1s....*puts on suit of armor*

The fact that you can select No In-Game Messaging *and* select non-anon I maintain is due to the totally modular game creation particular to this website. Other websites wouldn't allow such a combination.
Brankl (231 D)

Gunboat games aren't necessarily anon, but if you're looking for meaning statistics it might be useful to disregard games in which cheating is infinitely times easier and, in all likelihood, much more prevalent.
There is a point to be made that selecting "No Press" should automatically also select "Anonymous". But in the context of our site, they are as of yet separate things.
JamesYanik (548 D)

I thought it meant anon, but on vdip, gunboat just coincides with no press. I'm newish to diplomacy, so i think vdip is good
I don't think any players on this site can claim honor... As such a non-anon, no press game likely leads to PM press. So yes I agree they should go hand in hand and pretty much agree with Valis that gun boat requires both.

"No-press games
A no-press game is a game in which the players do not communicate at all, except through their orders. By constrast, in a press game, the players communicate normally. For the purposes of this article, I define "full press" to be any press settings in which the players can communicate directly to one another without any ambiguity as to who is talking (i.e., at least White, Partial, with no regard to Fake) and "incomplete press" to be any press settings that are neither no-press nor full-press. The term "no-press" is often conflated with the term "gunboat", which technically means that the players do not know each others' real-life identities. (Games without full press must be gunboat, of course, or the players would be able to communicate as if they were in a press game; but full press games may also be gunboat.)"

If you're simply looking for some clear, neutral definitions, then I would recommend to call 'full press' games 'full press', 'public press only' 'incomplete press' or 'limited press', and 'no in-game messaging' simply 'no press'.
chluke (12292 D(G))

Agree. Gunboat simply means no press to me.

I read that (and I quote) "gunboat means never having to say you're sorry"
thorfi (1023 D)
29 Jun 15 UTC
Since we're talking about stats on this site, and there isn't clear agreement about whether gunboat means "non-anon" or "anon", best to just avoid the term in the stats.

They're definitely a different game - even if players stick with the "no PMs" rule (which in the one no-press non-anonymous game I've played here nobody PMed me and I didn't PM anyone, so that's um, one anecdata point), it's different being able to look up your opponents' prior games.
thorfi (1023 D)
29 Jun 15 UTC
TruNinja: Hehehe. I've definitely said sorry (and even occasionally had it accepted) during gunboat games. You just have to do it with units, rather than press. :-)
yebellz (729 D(G))

Gunboat has always just meant "no press" to me, with anonymity being a separate, but often concurrent, option.

However, it seems that in the postal and email days, the term gunboat may have been used to mean different things in different communities.

Rainbow facebook friends
so, i have looked through my friendlis and out of around 98 people, i only have 2 people who have rainbow picks. I am in the center of utah in a community of around 70% mormons, so mine is probably way lower than average. I want to compare it to how off from the usual it is, so how many rainbow friends do you have?
