Feminism, Authoritarianism and Gender
I hesitate to post this, but i wonder where discussion will lead...
Is Gender socially constructed? Is there a difference between gender identity and gender expression? What other issues does this raise?

Why'd You Choose Your Username?
It's a decision we all make, and one we have to life with for the rest of our time on this site; choosing a username. Some choose their own name, their initials, a historical figure or even a reference to a movie or TV show. So I ask all of you, just why did you choose that username you have?

FIFA
US brings down the hammer
There was not a fan alive that would have defended corrupt FIFA yesterday, but I have a feeling that is going to change due to the judicial system that will be prosecuting the case. How are the arrests viewed in the areas that site members are from
From the US - soccer fans want more arrests until Blatter himself is arrested.

Can someone clarify what gives the US the right to prosecute in this case? I haven't read too much about it yet but I don't understand how an international organization can be tried by only one country like this, unless the crimes occurred on US soil which I do not believe they did.

Whatever crimes were committed involved something American, not necessarily occurring on US soil, such as a money transfer involving a US bank account.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

The crimes involved money transferring through US banks, which under international law allows the US to prosecute.

It also did actually happen to occur on US soil, so that's always helpful.
The banks is how the justice department has jurisdiction. Main charges are of money laundering, wire fraud, etc. Its how the US gets jurisdiction over most things like this.

platinumcashew (100 D)
28 May 15 UTC
FIFA is so corrupt, I wouldn't be surprised if they bribed the justice system to get away with this...just kidding. FIFA has long been corrupt (I'm really pissed that Sepp Blatter was not arrested along with the rest of the buffoons) and it's about time that someone realised this and took action.
Wusti (889 D)

I loved how their internal inquiry said that Australia (who received only 1 vote for 2022) was the evil-doer nation - when clearly what that ACTUALLY meant was we paid the least amount of bribes.

So. If the US came second....
haha, I'm sure the fact that the US being the winner of the bid should Qatar be cut out is a strong factor in all of this.
ckroberts (3548 D)

If hypothetically Qatar dropped the bid right now, who has the infrastructure to host in 2022? It can't be England, even though they already have the capacity to do it immediately, because Russia is hosting in 2018 and it can't be in the same continent. (If Russia loses its bid, I guess you put it in England?)

Just as a matter of practicality, it has to be the US, right? It can't be Europe or South America, so that means North America. I'm not particularly familiar with the infrastructure in China or Australia, but I get the impression they'd both require a lot of preparation. On the other hand, the US could hold multiple World Cups at the same time on short notice.

Yet another example of the US leading and Europe following.
jbalcorn (429 D)
28 May 15 UTC
The US has always been considered to be the "emergency" World Cup host, since we have the infrastructure to handle it with as little as a year's notice.

And the reason that the US pursued it is that they picked up Chuck Blazer a while ago and flipped him. He was living in an $18,000 per month apartment in New York with no visible means of support - and paying for the $6,000 apartment next door to hold his cats. And he refused to submit a tax return.

He's been carrying a recording device for some time now as a C.I. I'm guessing the plan is to hit them with some big penalties and get them to flip on Blatter. Blatter probably figured that Blazer was turned and refused to have any conversations with him.

Ges (292 D)

However the case goes down, the US absolutely should not host the Qatar games. It would smell terribly.
Ges, the US came second in voting though. You would say it should go to third place then? I think that was South Korea
ckroberts (3548 D)
28 May 15 UTC
South Korea just co-hosted with Japan. FIFA would want to avoid that, I think - same reason I don't consider especially Germany and to a lesser extent France as possibilities in 2022, plus of course Russia (a European nation) hosting. If you're changing the rules and traditions, which would become more likely if the WC is cancelled closer to its opening, you could theoretically do it anywhere with the stadiums and the infrastructure to handle millions of visitors in a short period of time - the US, England, Germany, France, probably Spain and Italy (?).

I don't think the fact that the US government is doing the prosecution would count much, generally speaking. Terrifyingly, America's court system has a relatively good reputation for professionalism and fairness - it's not that the US is so great, but everyone else is even worse. Plus, I think the fact of the broad influence of American financial institutions makes the US a natural candidate to pursue the case.

The United States has such world class infrastructure already, there's no money to be made in building more.
Ges (292 D)
28 May 15 UTC
@goldfinger: I do think that the USSF should declare preemptively that it will not host the Cup. At this point, let the legacy of the US for world football be to help clean up its governing structures or bidding procedures. If Qatar loses the Cup, and the US picks it up, it will look very quid pro quo-ey and any sentences handed down by US courts will be tainted in the eyes of much of the rest of the world.

Here in Brasil everybody is really happy with the arrests and hoping that other names like Blatter, Havelange, Teixeira and Del Nero also spend some time in jail.
And almost anywhere in the world seems a better place then Qatar to host the World Cup.
jbalcorn (429 D)
28 May 15 UTC
@Ges - The U.S has always been identified as the "emergency" World Cup host. When the South Africa construction looked like it wasn't going to finish, and the Brazilian, tentative plans were drawn up for a US world cup in both instances. It's simply about the fact that we have so much friggin' space - U.S. cities wouldn't be swamped by soccer fans, simply because they'd be spread out so much. And no construction has to be done.

Although our Public Transportation is terrible :-(

It's about practicality.
Ges (292 D)
28 May 15 UTC
@jbalcorn -- Thanks for the info! I did not know that we have already been a potential fallback site. I still think my original point stands, though -- better to let some other country host while this trial stretches on. I doubt that Qatar will lose the Cup in any case, though. Too disruptive and embarrassing for those who supported the bid. Our best bet is to have a better process going forward, and avoid a useless pile of blue-ribbon commissions and solemn avowals that "past mistakes have been recognized."
jbalcorn (429 D)
28 May 15 UTC
Hopefully, the people who supported the bid will be in jail. Tomorrow makes all the difference, if Prince Ali beats Blatter, everything changes.

What about all the people that are dying so that Qatar can hold a World Cup? So far 1200 people have died constructing the stadiums in Qatar. If they continue at their current rate, the construction of their stadiums will have the highest death count (4000+) associated with a building project since the Panama Canal.

Is saving a few thousand lives worth embarrassing a country the that bribed it's way to being selected? I sure think so.
They wouldn't even let them go back to Nepal to bury their loved ones
Australia would actually be able to hold a World Cup at short notice; there is a 30,000 plus capacity stadium in the five major cities, and Sydney and Melbourne have about 7 between them.,.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))

Didn't Mexico step in as an emergency host back in the 80s? Could happen again, especially since the crackdown on cartels appears to be working. If Brazil and South Africa could do it, I don't see why Mexico couldn't.
jbalcorn (429 D)
29 May 15 UTC
i Think AUstralia 2022 would be awesome, especially since it would be winter and the heat wouldn't be the factor it can be - the South African WC was good for that reason. But FIFA demands a lot more than 5 venues - remember that "Jungle stadium" in Brazil?

Of course, beer wouldn't be a problem in Oz. :-)

My son votes for 2022 Australia. He'll be 29 and wants to visit Australia
Wusti (889 D)
29 May 15 UTC
The logical Choice is Australia since we failed so visibly to garner votes in that round and we have at least 15 stadia available and the 2000 Olympics still live in memory.

Timezone is the biggest negative I think
Lets see, for EST the games would be starting at 11pm, 2am and 5am. Prime time right there haha
