Modern Diplomacy Scoring
While the 13 and 12/n scoring method is reasonable and easy to calculate, I wanted to try using 66 and 60/n instead. This gives a slightly larger premium to a solo which is now worth 10% more than a draw instead of 8.33%. 60 also divides evenly into a 5 player draw so whole numbers are more likely to result.
With these slight changes, here are the tournament points I calculated:
PLAYERS RANKED BY TOURNAMENT POINTS (66 & 60/n)
159 Jeff Kuta
132 y2kjbk
113 Yaleunc
78 Lando Calrissian
55 eliwhitney
35 Wusti
32 Tasnica
20 peaceinourtime
12 kasimax
0 Captain Tomorrow
636 GRAND TOTAL (6*66 + 4*60)
GREAT POWERS RANKED BY TOURNAMENT POINTS (66 & 60/n)
179 Egypt
106 Turkey
93 Germany
78 Poland
67 Spain
66 France
20 Russia
15 Ukraine
12 Italy
0 Britain
636 GRAND TOTAL
Now, these numbers are all fine and well. But they don't tell the whole story about how well a person or country performed relative to the average. For example, a solo is a great accomplishment, but it seems a solo with Egypt is easier than a solo with France. I went back in and did some other calculations to see what results they yielded.
I awarded points per game to each player based on the percentage of the total points earned by each country over the tournament. For example in Game 1, y2kjbk got a solo with France earning 66
. These were the only points earned by France the entire tournament, so y2kjbk earned 100
for this game. In Game 2, y2kjbk got a solo with Germany earning 66
. Two others earned draws with Germany: Wusti (4-way draw in G3 for 15
) and Tasnica (5-way draw in G10 for 12
). y2kjbk got 70.96
for Game 2 (100*66/93). y2kjbk therefore got a new score of 170.96. I also did this for countries showing how much they contributed to each player's base point total. The rankings changed a bit.
PLAYERS RANKED BY SUM OF AVERAGE POINT CONTRIBUTIONS
266.7 Yaleunc
176.0 Jeff Kuta
171.0 y2kjbk
138.2 eliwhitney
52.3 Lando Calrissian
35.0 Wusti
24.1 Tasnica
18.9 peaceinourtime
17.9 kasimax
0.0 Captain Tomorrow
900.0 GRAND TOTAL
GREAT POWERS RANKED BY SUM OF AVERAGE POINT CONTRIBUTIONS
240.3 Egypt
198.7 Turkey
163.4 Spain
130.4 Germany
56.9 Poland
50.0 France
36.4 Russia
13.3 Ukraine
10.6 Italy
0.0 Britain
900.0 GRAND TOTAL
How to interpret these numbers. These numbers are indicative of how much a player or country out-performed the others relative to the average performance. Yaleunc earned all the points for Ukraine in the tournament with a draw in G3. He also earned all the points for Italy with a draw in G10. This is noteworthey since he did something no one else could accomplish. As a result, those two games ended up earning him 200
. The country results indicate how "easy" a country is to play. The more points in the ranking, the more they contributed to player point totals overall. kasimax scored all of his 12
with Spain in G10, so Spain got 100
for this game. Spain moved up in rankings because many people earned points with Spain.
Why only 900 grand total points instead of 1000? Because 9 of 10 players and countries earned points.
Practical usage. I think this tournament clearly showed that the winner of the Egypt/Turkey rivalry in the southeast has a very strong chance to go far on the Modern Diplomacy map. I still think Germany is overrated, but that to me is because the French player thinks of Germany as their classic rival, when Spain is really where their attention should go. Germany and Britain are more clearly forced into conflict over Belgium, Holland and the North Sea in Modern. The SC move from Brittany to Bordeaux is crucial with respect to naval power in the Atlantic. Poland and Italy seem to me to be the wild cards in Modern. Maybe they need to work together more often.
