Did Cameron do this on purpose?
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jun/28/cameron-eu-juncker-defeat-britain-exit

His foreign policy is a total shambles but maybe he did this on purpose to accelerate the Brexit. It takes great strategic planning to bungle something this badly.

Could someone explain to me how to get the derivative of:
(3x^2+6x)/(2x^3+2)^5
So [(3x^2+6x)/(2x^3+2)^5]'=.....
I've missed quite some math classes lately and I need to know how to solve this type of thing (and other things but anyway) for a test tomorrow. I could probably figure it out myself eventually, but I just don't have the time and I have quite a bit more to go through.
Would someone be willing to show me the steps I should take?

What is wrong with you people? Young Steepher asks a maths question, and within a few posts we have Putin being an ass and abgemacht responding with crude abuse. Have a fucking word with yourselves. Sense of perspective, at all, please?

"Wikipedia is an excellent source so long as you actually bother to use the references they give as well as the information they offer on their own page. "

.....smh

http://www.findingdulcinea.com/news/education/2010/march/The-Top-10-Reasons-Students-Cannot-Cite-or-Rely-on-Wikipedia.html

The 'references they give' are not necessarily reliable, and often are not.

Jamie, we were simply having a polite pedagogical discussion. No need to use the dad voice.
Tru Ninja (1016 D (S))

I don't have a problem with people citing Wikipedia, there are valid reasons for it, especially if they're looking to use something to back up their point on something. It's NOT a reasonable source when you want something that needs to be factual, authoritative or scholarly.

@Jamie: His question was answered, if it's of any value...
abgemacht (840 D (G))

@Jamiet

Yeah, fair enough.

@Putin/bo

I'm inclined to agree with Putin on this one. Wikipedia is great for learning about different topics for fun and can be a great starting point for research, but I'd be hesitant to use it for scholarly work without independently verifying the information in it.

@Tru/abge ... no, it's not good for that kind of thing, but I don't write "scholarly articles," I write 10 pages and get a letter stamped on it. I understand that there are teachers here but I hope you two (or more, I don't know) don't actually think your students take your assignments quite that seriously. Besides, if the information in one reference is wrong, typically using another reference will make that obvious and you'll go elsewhere to figure it out.
abgemacht (840 D (G))
29 Jun 14 UTC
Students that don't take my classes seriously tend to get a 2nd opportunity not to take them seriously. : )

"Besides, if the information in one reference is wrong, typically using another reference will make that obvious and you'll go elsewhere to figure it out."

Perhaps this is true for basic topics, but this is a bad mentality to have for more advanced subjects.
Putin33 (111 D)
29 Jun 14 UTC
No, they clearly don't. Half of them plagiarize the gibberish they read on wikipedia and occasionally don't even bother to edit out the links or changes in font. But it's exceedingly frustrating when the whole point of an assignment is to teach people how to do basic research skills and they just regurgitate wikipedia entries.

I don't understand why instead of rallying around a fellow webdip player, we are arguing about Wikipedia. I'm a student, I use Wikipedia to find key terms that I then google to find reliable sources such as articles, or websites ending in : edu or gov. Of course my best advice for steephie is to use YouTube and find a video of someone performing the type of function you are looking for. Math is not easily understood through language but visually will be far more beneficial.
CommanderByron (869 D (S))
29 Jun 14 UTC
Let's keep in mind that steephie isn't researching a topic but looking up a order of operations to a math problem.
abgemacht (840 D (G))
29 Jun 14 UTC
Steephie said he solved his problem. If he has more questions I (and others, I'm sure) would be happy to help.
CommanderByron (869 D (S))

So what's the argument? The usefulness of Wikipedia? Not useful for anything but a starting point if you are trying to pass a course.
bo_sox48 (4844 D Mod (G))
29 Jun 14 UTC
I figured you might take what I said to mean I don't think your students care and that that's somehow an insult on your teaching ability, but I'm simply trying to say that Wikipedia is an easy way to find what you need, and it's no less reliable than a simple google search and going for one of the first options, which is what my public schools taught me to do ironically.

Putin, in my mind, the best way to teach someone how to actually research is by using o library, whether it be a real library or an online library. Even if you use a search engine through an online library, there's real research. That's how I learned what a credible source actually looked like.

Probably best way is quotient rule followed by chain rule.
If you are not sure how to apply either, use your text book.

The best way to help this fellow webdipper would be to tell it to go to class.

You are all reinforcing laziness and truancy.
steephie22 (182 D (S))

Indeed, my problem is solved. It was evident that, rather than not understanding the concept, I ignored a much simpler concept: (ab)^2=a^2+2ab+b^2

Quite basic, I normally do it automatically. I think that's the reason I missed it 3 times: I don't consciously think about it, it's just the basics... And I forgot that part of the basics after not having used it for a really long while...

So thanks again for the help. I already had the test today so if I have any mathematical questions before next schoolyear it's only out of interest, unless I'm taking the test again, but that's unlikely, because I think it went quite well, better than other tests.

Of Kurds and Caliphates
http://news.yahoo.com/netanyahu-calls-jordan-support-kurdish-autonomy-214846630.html The ISIS today declared itself to be an Islamic State...and we'll see how long that lasts, or where that goes...meanwhile, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyau called for support for the Jordanians (gee, I can't imagine why) and independence for Iraq's Kurds. Which is a more likely state to be recognized/come into being/"stick," a Kurdistan (if you will) or this ISIS caliphate? Thoughts?

B.J. Upton powers Braves past Phillies 3-2
Gerald Laird had two hits with a double and RBI for the Braves, who won for the sixth time in seven games though ending their road trip 8-3. Atlanta avenged a three-game sweep by Philadelphia June 16-18 at Turner Field.

Question for the mods:
I note we have some newish stats, like reliability rating. Ilove the idea of this. Is there some way we can set up games with a minimum reliability rating threshhold for participants? That would be a really nice way to filter out the people who join live games and then immediately quit the moment the game does not work out for them.

Coastal Movement
Normally, when two units make a move to each other's territories, it causes a bounce (Rhur moves to Munich while Munich moves to Rhur). However, would coasts be treated as different territories for fleets? For example, could a fleet in Spain (nc) move to MAO while another fleet in MAO moved to Spain (sc)? Same with Bulgarian coasts and Constantinople. Thanks in advance!

OK, sorry for the delay...and the continued delay--we'll start Midnight tonight. ORWELL! DICKENS! POE! TOLKIEN! Who will advance?

And a bonus question, just for schnicks and giggles--what's the first book you read after high school (or, if it was a while ago, the earliest book you can remember reading after high school?) Just curious to see what we get.

Worst Non-Sitcom TV Show You've Ever Watched? (4 Episodes Minimum)
Friends were raving about this Netflix show, "Orange is the New Black." Watched. ..It's awful. Wall to wall. The main lead (not the actress herself, she seems to be trying, at least) is like the adult equivalent of Bella Swann meets Every Yuppie Character Ever. Every character's a stereotype. Every guy is a perv, sex-crazed ass, douche, OR just has no life whatsoever. The writing is as bad as I've seen...and yet, this won awards? xD So, worst shows?
