lol, Poe.
No offense to Tolkien who is a great creator, but Poe's work is too huge not to vote for him here.

It isn't official yet, but probably gonna be Tolkien unless Poe pulls a Raven out of his hat.

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Yes, Tolkien 17 Poe 14.

I'm sure AT&T would have won had it been nominated, for its brilliant epic - the yellowpages.

^Not long enough. It would have needed to be a real full-length saga. Also, the names simply aren't Elvish enough.

And there is a lack of Dwarvish songs.
Fishstudios (245 D)

The yellow pages isn't an epic - perhaps an epic catalogue, though.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_catalogue

Also, if they ever put out a version of the yellow pages written in heroic couplets, I may actually start using a phone book again.

I understand being upset that your preferred author lost, but why is it that all of the people voting for Tolkien are acknowledging that Poe is also good and all the people voting for Poe are just bitching about Tolkien? Why did nobody complain as much when Tolkien beat better authors in previous rounds?
Stating the obvious, I think this whole vote is more a reflection of our demographic than it is about the writers...

Octavious (2802 D)
30 Jun 14 UTC
I disagree. This was a favorite author tournament and The Lord of the Rings has consistently been at the top of UK favorite book surveys throughout my lifetime. The demographic of this site has little to do with it.

These are the same lists that claim Ulysses was the greatest book of the 20th century.
semck83 (229 D(B))
30 Jun 14 UTC
No, putin, those are usually surveys of scholars, whereas I believe Octavious is referring to popular surveys. It will be a long time yet till Ulysses tops a popular survey.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
30 Jun 14 UTC
1. I DO think Ulysses was one of if not the greatest book of the 20th century...

I'd say I think 1984 was the most important/far-reaching work, given how Orwellian, Big Brother, Room 101 and all the concepts of that book are so pertinent today and have entered into the common public consciousness--even if people don't know who wrote "To be or not to be," or who says it, they know the line and know it's dramatically staging a critical choice, same with Big Brother, even if they don't know the book, they KNOW what that a Big brother State means by now--but...

You hate Orwell. ...Don't know if you hate Joyce, Putin, but you don't seem to like Ulysses...

So, oh well. How WILL I get along knowing you hate those two geniuses?

Well, this was a fun tournament, anyway...sometime I'll have to try and rank them 1-64 based on point totals and how far they advanced.

So, are we doing movies or music next?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

2. Lists are overrated.

3. So's irony. :p

You can do music if you want obi, but I'm totally uninterested in that.

I'll start planning out the movies one, but I don't think I'll start it for awhile.

Did Cameron do this on purpose?
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jun/28/cameron-eu-juncker-defeat-britain-exit

His foreign policy is a total shambles but maybe he did this on purpose to accelerate the Brexit. It takes great strategic planning to bungle something this badly.

Could someone explain to me how to get the derivative of:
(3x^2+6x)/(2x^3+2)^5
So [(3x^2+6x)/(2x^3+2)^5]'=.....
I've missed quite some math classes lately and I need to know how to solve this type of thing (and other things but anyway) for a test tomorrow. I could probably figure it out myself eventually, but I just don't have the time and I have quite a bit more to go through.
Would someone be willing to show me the steps I should take?

Of Kurds and Caliphates
http://news.yahoo.com/netanyahu-calls-jordan-support-kurdish-autonomy-214846630.html The ISIS today declared itself to be an Islamic State...and we'll see how long that lasts, or where that goes...meanwhile, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyau called for support for the Jordanians (gee, I can't imagine why) and independence for Iraq's Kurds. Which is a more likely state to be recognized/come into being/"stick," a Kurdistan (if you will) or this ISIS caliphate? Thoughts?

B.J. Upton powers Braves past Phillies 3-2
Gerald Laird had two hits with a double and RBI for the Braves, who won for the sixth time in seven games though ending their road trip 8-3. Atlanta avenged a three-game sweep by Philadelphia June 16-18 at Turner Field.

Question for the mods:
I note we have some newish stats, like reliability rating. Ilove the idea of this. Is there some way we can set up games with a minimum reliability rating threshhold for participants? That would be a really nice way to filter out the people who join live games and then immediately quit the moment the game does not work out for them.

Coastal Movement
Normally, when two units make a move to each other's territories, it causes a bounce (Rhur moves to Munich while Munich moves to Rhur). However, would coasts be treated as different territories for fleets? For example, could a fleet in Spain (nc) move to MAO while another fleet in MAO moved to Spain (sc)? Same with Bulgarian coasts and Constantinople. Thanks in advance!

OK, sorry for the delay...and the continued delay--we'll start Midnight tonight. ORWELL! DICKENS! POE! TOLKIEN! Who will advance?

And a bonus question, just for schnicks and giggles--what's the first book you read after high school (or, if it was a while ago, the earliest book you can remember reading after high school?) Just curious to see what we get.
