Worst Non-Sitcom TV Show You've Ever Watched? (4 Episodes Minimum)
Friends were raving about this Netflix show, "Orange is the New Black." Watched. ..It's awful. Wall to wall. The main lead (not the actress herself, she seems to be trying, at least) is like the adult equivalent of Bella Swann meets Every Yuppie Character Ever. Every character's a stereotype. Every guy is a perv, sex-crazed ass, douche, OR just has no life whatsoever. The writing is as bad as I've seen...and yet, this won awards? xD So, worst shows?

Populism and Democracy
I've heard in here that populism is the plague that affects democracy (the topic praising appeasement). I would like people to elaborate on the subject - how does populism undermine the democratic principles, and what can we learn about this in history?

But if people are too stupid to vote then they're probably too stupid to do a lot of other things properly. If leadership fails in government it probably fails in business.

Make only proven business leaders eligible then. Hahaha.

"A political literacy test would be an interesting development. I personally don't think anyone should be allowed to vote without first at least knowing a few of the policies of the major parties."
I am glad this issue about political literacy has been raised because in itself it actually negates democracy.
Democracy is not about what you do and don't know in policy terms. It is the equal right to have your say on who governs you, this is very important.
The reason why real people don't engage/relate on a personal level with political types because they are a bunch of duplicitous hypocritical back-stabbers who spend most of the time covering their own arse and blaming someone else for their failings.
If you give a group of people the facts about the individual candidates a collective conscience will develop that says "this person is probably the best person to do the job as this moment in time". The individuals within the collective (the electorate) do not have to know much about this persons policies, they get a feeling about a person and they base their vote on that 'feeling'.
It worked for Obama and for Clinton and for Thatcher and for Blair, charismatic people that wooed the public into voting for them.
When you look back at their political careers they may have done some shit stuff but people still voted for them because of what they said and not what they did.

With regard to Business leaders that has to be the biggest joke going, they are so many shite people running big business it is unbelievable.
The good thing for them is when they fuck up they get a huge pay off. Where was the leadership during the banking crisis back in 2008.
Gordon Brown was Churchillian during this time when business and govt heads the world over were shitting themselves, frozen by fear, incapable of action. Business leaders, don't make me larf !!

Because populism is equated with social media usage and not the evil elite vs good masses dichotomy, right?

That is democracy for you .... gets them every time. The Tories voted in Cameron because he wasn't David Davies :-)
Octavious (2732 D)

I've always assumed they must have anticipated the election being a walkover, which allowed them the freedom to choose someone whose ideals appealed to them rather than someone more in tune with the public. In hindsight David would have been a far better choice for an election fight.

Ed's ideals don't appeal to me. He's made cheap jokes about his father's marxism, he's opposed to nationalisation, he supported the welfare cap and didn't oppose workfare. He's a toad.

"But if people are too stupid to vote then they're probably too stupid to do a lot of other things properly. If leadership fails in government it probably fails in business."

Oh it certainly does, don't get me wrong. It's hard to find truly good leaders in any avenue of life. The problem isn't unique to government, that's just the context in which it's being discussed itt.

Populism is merely the disparaging term elites give to democracy when it gets in the way of their pillaging the rest of society. Democracy's greatest strength is in its ability to put a brake on the ability of the powerful to shape things in ways that make things worse for everyone else by giving everyone else a veto. Time and time again you find businesses harming the economy through preferential rules or health and general welfare through fraud, unfair business practices, and pollution. It is pretty well established that leading businesses undermines the moral and ethical judgment that is fundamentally important to being a political leader, which is why business leaders are terrible choices for political leaders. They are too used to having things their way because they order it and far to used to thinking that their own money and their own benefit is the only thing that matters and far to used to coming up with specious moral justifications for why this is acceptable. Instead of making governess run more like businesses, businesses should be run more like governments and be require to show how their activities benefit society and contribute to the welfare of others. Management research has shown that frequently that public institutions are typically more efficient because the individuals in them are motivated by their mission and the public good that in bilking the public for profit. By keeping an eye on the proper mission of society, democracy provides an ability to counteract the failures of the market and provide a counter weight to the worst excesses of business. So no, populism isn't a weakness of democracy, it is what makes capitalism work. Without it, you simply end up with a crony capitalist cabal of oligarchs who would destroy the conditions necessary to a functioning economy and society by creating all kinds of unfair regimes to prevent competitors from succeeding and to steal as much as possible from the populace

Appeasement: unfairly maligned strategy?
I've been reading quite a bit about British & French foreign policy at the turn of the century, and it seems like appeasement (reduction of tensions through concessions) has gotten an unnecessarily bad reputation.

Can atheists believe in free will?
If our consciousness is simply a product of the mushy 3-dimensional circuit board we call a brain, governed entirely by the fixed and unchanging laws of physics and chemistry, is there any kind of free will? Or are all our decisions in life predetermined, like a computer program running through its code, simply responding to various inputs?

Again--This is NOT a Christian Country...
http://news.yahoo.com/republicans-obama-must-defend-christian-values-192212780--election.html Christians live here--AND Jews, AND Muslims, AND Buddhists and Hindus and Atheists (fastest growing group!) AND dozens of others (including, hey, all those Native American tribes and religions...many of which were criminalized in part until the 1970s)...WHY? Why must Obama defend the values of a specific sect, when the Constitution clearly is anti-favoritism in terms of religion?

Commenting on ongoing gunboat games
I realise of course that you are not allowed to circumvent the no talking rule, like press via email or pm or f2f talking etc. but why is discussing the board in general disallowed? I get that I should not say who I am in the game but if someone is to talk about the board unbiased and without revealing who they are would this be acceptable?

Two team members per country game?
Would anyone be interested in creating a game, that each of the 7 clasic countries were comprised of two team members consulting together. I understand that only one can actually be listed in the game itself, but maybe create a side pot for the second team members that would pay out equally at end of game

Right now David Cameron is going on about the "threat" from Jihadists leaving the UK to go fight in Iraq and Syria.
Am I missing something? Why are Jihadists fighting in Syria a threat here? To me, it seems no more different than Orwell fighting in Spain.

I have recent engaged at this online Diplomacy. Long time ago, I did played this game in board. There were choices in the Classic Map for less than seven players. For six players, for example, one have to quit Turkey and Bulgaria. Is there any variants at this webDiplomacy that allow games of this kind? Could it be created?

Planning ahead, I'll probably be happy doing anything more useful than what most people usually do during holidays, so I figured that doing some web design for someone is a good way to help, brush up and improve my skills and perhaps even earn a couple of bucks.
