Worst Non-Sitcom TV Show You've Ever Watched? (4 Episodes Minimum)
Friends were raving about this Netflix show, "Orange is the New Black." Watched. ..It's awful. Wall to wall. The main lead (not the actress herself, she seems to be trying, at least) is like the adult equivalent of Bella Swann meets Every Yuppie Character Ever. Every character's a stereotype. Every guy is a perv, sex-crazed ass, douche, OR just has no life whatsoever. The writing is as bad as I've seen...and yet, this won awards? xD So, worst shows?

Who is arming all of these people?
I put on the news and firstly
Suarez bites someone else
Then an apology from PM David Cameron for making a phone hacker his director of communications
Then England team abject fail at football and cricket
Then helicopter shot down in Ukraine (despite ceasefire)
Then insurgents in Iraq take control of oil refinery
Then Boko Haram kill a few more people and steal a few more children
Then another deadly shooting in Miami
People shooting at passenger planes in Pakistan
No time to even think about a major war in Syria, or Afghanistan, or Israel and Iran, or the fundamental weaknesses of Islam or a military coup in Thailand or missing aeroplanes or South Korean ferry crash trials or young kids in the UK going out to fight abroad.
I don't even know what North Korea is doing or how many countries are still persecuting gays
Is there too much news at the moment?

Myanmar is in the midst of a nasty genocide, second only to North Korea. I don't think democracy is within their plans.

Mapu I realize that a lot of people do just that, don't worry about what is going on elsewhere but I have a desire to know what is happening around the world, it interests and concerns me, I can't just bury my head in the sand.
That doesn't mean I don't contribute to my own community just because I am interested in foreign affairs.
I understand your sentiments though, a lot of people seem to think like that.

@Nigee, as always information is not neutral, but it is being ordered in a particular way that satisfies news consumers. I'm not saying that all of that stuff is not important (because it is), but news channels select which news to give you so don't take that as the only facts there are.

Also in the news:
- SpaceX Want To Put Humans on Mars Within 12 Years
- Germany Now Produces Half Of Its Energy Using Solar
- New Type Of Computer Capable Of Calculating 640TBs Of Data In One Billionth Of A Second, Could Revolutionize Computing

I've had a whole new take on how news is ordered since I started living in a country which is not my home country, and in which it takes me quite a bit of effort to read the local news.

I read some local news, and I still read the news from back home. But both of those I read with significantly more physical and emotional distance than I did before. Many of the headlines read like "Man Bites Dog" to me. And many of the global news seem hopelessly skewed from the western perspective, while those publishing don't seem one iota aware of their own biases.

Anyway, I have started to read a lot more science articles - those still matter deeply to me, as they are largely perspective-free.

Disasters and death are better reported since you can now hear about incidents from all over the world instead of just your neighborhood. Plus weapons have improved in the last 2000 years so more people can be killed in an incident by a single person.

If it bleeds it leads is still true in the news industry. For instance major World Cup Soccer news was whether a player bit another.

Poverty has halved since 50 years ago, there is no more plague, we are now more in touch with each other than ever before, multi-culturalism has triumphed, people now travel freely between opposed nations, nearly all countries in the world recognise the existence of human rights, we can now create new organs from scratch, the population is booming, and yes people are still dying (thank God! imagine what would happen if they didn't), in short you can't live forever and you can't live in a world without pain and suffering, they are a part of life just like a lion biting a bison's neck and dragging him to the floor while he wishes for mercy in his brain, but generally things are looking pretty good for us, compared to the rest of the apes what we have achieved is incredible.

Minister of War -
Sorry to be a pedant, but I am almost certain that the claim that Germany produces half its power by pv is wrong; I think the actual proportion is around 5%. Was the quoted figure originally given in the Onion?
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Jun 14 UTC
No.

I read the reference and I still don't understand how a midday claim for two hours on a public holiday equates to Germany producing half it's power from solar. Either this is a deliberate misrepresentation or a comprehension problem.
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Jun 14 UTC
Blame that on the German headlines, then.

The question was did the claim come from the onion. It did not. It came from a plethora of newspaper headlines.
fulhamish (4134 D)

Pleased to see you carrying on with the smoke and mirrors then; par for the course I guess. The fact remains that the claim was wrong and you either knew that or needed it pointed out to you.

In other exciting news, my car was 100% powered by the sun for 20 minutes on Friday evening whilst I was stationary in a field and just wanted a warm temperature.

In all fairness, when saying something as fundamentally unlikely as Germany having half of its energy produced by solar, a little digging before hand is probably in order.

The story reported that Germany's *peak* production from solar PV can now reach 50% of demand. That claim is accurate.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

I also like the fact that fulhamish is choosing to specifically attack Putin for a claim which was made by TMOW, not Putin. Putin merely provided a link to a report, *after* fulhamish had questioned the source.

Weasel words.

Germany can produce half of its power from solar on a very sunny day but it normally does not.

Why?

The same reason why wind power can produce a good proportion of the power of the Netherlands but does not.

Electric power can't be easily stored and traditional power plants can't ramp up power production in minutes or seconds if a cloud passes under the sun or the wind dies down between gusts. If half of the power was relying on that power, the electric grid goes down. And up. And down. And up.

So, rather than have continual brownouts, traditional power plants normally produce the base load. Solar and wind normally only supplies the spare capacity above that, to handle short-term peaks or to immediately supply power if a power plant goes down or a transmission line breaks.

So, on a sunny day without clouds, life is good for solar and a coal-powered plant is put on standby.

Although there are also a lot of good things going on, yes, the number of refugees has gone up a lot lately. Part of this is just because there are a lot more people in the world so the number of refugees has gone up more than proportionally, due to where population growth is happening. But the number of wars, revolutions, etc. has gone up too.

Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

He provided a link for you to read, because you asked if the story was from the Onion. Putin himself did not make the claim.

If you're actually interested, in 2012, the most recent year I could find full data for, 22.9% of Germany's energy demand was actually met by renewable forms of energy. (Including solar, wind, geothermal and hydro-electric)

I've heard in here that populism is the plague that affects democracy (the topic praising appeasement). I would like people to elaborate on the subject - how does populism undermine the democratic principles, and what can we learn about this in history?

Can atheists believe in free will?
If our consciousness is simply a product of the mushy 3-dimensional circuit board we call a brain, governed entirely by the fixed and unchanging laws of physics and chemistry, is there any kind of free will? Or are all our decisions in life predetermined, like a computer program running through its code, simply responding to various inputs?

Again--This is NOT a Christian Country...
http://news.yahoo.com/republicans-obama-must-defend-christian-values-192212780--election.html Christians live here--AND Jews, AND Muslims, AND Buddhists and Hindus and Atheists (fastest growing group!) AND dozens of others (including, hey, all those Native American tribes and religions...many of which were criminalized in part until the 1970s)...WHY? Why must Obama defend the values of a specific sect, when the Constitution clearly is anti-favoritism in terms of religion?

Two team members per country game?
Would anyone be interested in creating a game, that each of the 7 clasic countries were comprised of two team members consulting together. I understand that only one can actually be listed in the game itself, but maybe create a side pot for the second team members that would pay out equally at end of game
