Populism and Democracy
I've heard in here that populism is the plague that affects democracy (the topic praising appeasement). I would like people to elaborate on the subject - how does populism undermine the democratic principles, and what can we learn about this in history?

Today's number is 38. I suggest everyone check out some of the open games. Post here with any games you take over for the next 48 hours and you'll get reimbursed for them. PM me for anonymous games. Games with more then 1 banned cheater will probably be cancelled so don't join them.

Appeasement: unfairly maligned strategy?
I've been reading quite a bit about British & French foreign policy at the turn of the century, and it seems like appeasement (reduction of tensions through concessions) has gotten an unnecessarily bad reputation.

Can atheists believe in free will?
If our consciousness is simply a product of the mushy 3-dimensional circuit board we call a brain, governed entirely by the fixed and unchanging laws of physics and chemistry, is there any kind of free will? Or are all our decisions in life predetermined, like a computer program running through its code, simply responding to various inputs?

Again--This is NOT a Christian Country...
http://news.yahoo.com/republicans-obama-must-defend-christian-values-192212780--election.html Christians live here--AND Jews, AND Muslims, AND Buddhists and Hindus and Atheists (fastest growing group!) AND dozens of others (including, hey, all those Native American tribes and religions...many of which were criminalized in part until the 1970s)...WHY? Why must Obama defend the values of a specific sect, when the Constitution clearly is anti-favoritism in terms of religion?

Commenting on ongoing gunboat games
I realise of course that you are not allowed to circumvent the no talking rule, like press via email or pm or f2f talking etc. but why is discussing the board in general disallowed? I get that I should not say who I am in the game but if someone is to talk about the board unbiased and without revealing who they are would this be acceptable?

Two team members per country game?
Would anyone be interested in creating a game, that each of the 7 clasic countries were comprised of two team members consulting together. I understand that only one can actually be listed in the game itself, but maybe create a side pot for the second team members that would pay out equally at end of game

Jihadists in Syria
Right now David Cameron is going on about the "threat" from Jihadists leaving the UK to go fight in Iraq and Syria.
Am I missing something? Why are Jihadists fighting in Syria a threat here? To me, it seems no more different than Orwell fighting in Spain.

Classic variant: less than seven players.
I have recent engaged at this online Diplomacy. Long time ago, I did played this game in board. There were choices in the Classic Map for less than seven players. For six players, for example, one have to quit Turkey and Bulgaria. Is there any variants at this webDiplomacy that allow games of this kind? Could it be created?

Need some web design in the holidays?
Planning ahead, I'll probably be happy doing anything more useful than what most people usually do during holidays, so I figured that doing some web design for someone is a good way to help, brush up and improve my skills and perhaps even earn a couple of bucks. Perhaps someone has such a project for me?
See inside.

I already designed something else for someone else, but that has not gone online (yet). I say that for 2 reasons: so you know that I have some experience and so you know that I could show you what I designed before to see how skilled I actually am/was.
I use HTML (+HTML5), CSS and maybe a tiny bit of Javascript, but that would really just be for some tricks. Javascript is by no means something I'm trained at.

For the ones who don't know what that means, it means that I can give you as many pages and as much text as you want, links, navigation through many pages, pictures, external video's (posted on youtube for example), music (never tried that actually but I think so) etc. as well as design it in any way you want with colours, fonts, letter sizes, boxes, background pictures, also making it compatible for smaller(/bigger) devices, making things compatible for different browsers etc.
So far, that's (arguably almost) only static stuff. Pop-ups, special effects and such are on the edge of what I know and don't know right now.
Way beyond that edge is stuff that involves gathering data and such. I could decide to learn that, but I don't have those skills right now. I have the open mind to work around many issues using static features though.
I am willing to learn some other things depending on other factors such as the cause and/or money. Which brings me to another relevant bit...

I like money, but there are things I would probably do for free. I don't commit for free though, so while I would probably work on it and perhaps finish it, I reserve the right to stop at any moment if I find a better way to spend my holiday. I might find myself more eager to continue writing my book, just to name something. Deadlines and such are still good to know, but I won't promise making any of them if I get nothing in return. I might end up considering it a serious commitment nonetheless, but I will try hard not to say so if I do. I just don't want to risk ending up waving unexpected cool events or such goodbye because I'm too busy doing something voluntarily I.committed to.

Nominal fee and I'll treat it like a serious project. Normal fee and you'll have a hard time stopping me from sinking too many hours into it and going for perfection. You don't have to pay for overtime though, unless you want to :)

Like I said though, I'll do some things for free, so even if you don't want to pay me, suggestions/proposals are good.

steephie22 (182 D (S))
18 Jun 14 UTC
@Mapu: as English is not my first language I might misunderstand, but page mockups are fine, I just don't get why I would use photoshop (if that's what you're saying) rather than writing the code...? Do you mean making the page with photoshop and then just using the picture as page or something?

@SYnapse: never did it before, but I suppose I could do that. I must say it has little appeal for me though.

@bo_sox48: since all my paintings tend to end up in the bin somehow, I don't think I'll do that :)

@abgemacht: like I said in OP, I designed something before and could show it if you're interested, but I'm not uploading it to a site yet, quite simply because I'm very busy until next wednesday. I'm just looking/advertising in advance when I can't do anything for school or something, so when I can use a pc I'm doing school stuff, and uploading from mobile would be troublesome...
You want to see it though?
abgemacht (840 D (G))

PM me your email and I'll send you a zip when I feel like it. The pictures used were urls from google though (which was fine for the purpose), so it's possible that the background and/or 'products' are not there anymore. Will check that too. I could easily pick different pictures though.

Yeah OK, let me explain.

A portfolio is something you have already prepared to show people who are actually capable. When I asked for a portfolio, I meant send me a link to a site that you own that hosts snippets of your projects. You aren't going to get serious work with this half assed BS.

Above meant as constructive criticism, of course.

19 Jun 14 UTC
@jmo: PM your email and I'll do it when I feel like it :)

@abgemacht: I know that. Right now this is all I got though and I see no reason not to ask wether someone has such a project.

Maybe I'll design my own website to show as portfolio, but unless I find a good use I don't feel like paying for hosting...

Steephie I need some web design, when can you start?
steephie22 (182 D (S))
21 Jun 14 UTC
Last day of my incoming testweek is the 2nd of July (that's a wednesday) and I could really start after that. A few days more until I'm practically free (don't know how much in all honesty), so then I can pour in much more time.
I might even decide to start doing something before or during the testweek though, depending on many factors, but I can't promise that.

What did you have in mind?
Feel free to send a PM. I'll also send you a PM with my email adress in it so you can mail as well if that's what you prefer.

I'm having trouble seeing how that isn't pretty much the very core of designing websites, hence my confusion before, so I think I'm good at that.
NigeeBaby (100 D (G))
22 Jun 14 UTC
Steephie I think it depends on the audience, I would expect a very different user experience if I was going on a technical or scientific website compared to say a website for selling cars or a childs play website, different strokes for different folks.
steephie22 (182 D (S))
22 Jun 14 UTC
Yeah, I didn't read your email yet when I posted that, but yes, I still think it's a core part of web design, and I still think I'm decent at it, if I spend enough time on it.

Anyway, I already said what else I wanted to say via email.
