It's Maple's Alter Ego! (But Seriously--Should Serling Be Forced to Sell the Team?)
http://nba.si.com/2014/04/29/donald-sterling-adam-silver-nba-owners-reaction/ To be clear--this is HYPOTHETICAL. There's nothing in the NBA Constitution that gives the commissioner the right to do this, so this is more just a thought experiment--say that power existed, and Adam Silver COULD force Serling to sell the team based on his repeated racist comments over the years, with this last doozy being the kicker. If the power existed, SHOULD the man lose his team over this?

Gunboat game for the reliable but poor
I'm tired of the NMRs and CDs that are far too common i the low-bet games I can afford to play. I'd love to play in the big-pot games with the best players, but I don't have the $ (and, hey, I'm not that good anyway). If there are other middle of the road players who feel the same way, perhaps we can organize a password-protected game (or two if there's enough interest) of reliable gunboaters. More below.

Phase length for FTF games?
I've been thinking about putting together a face to face game for some new players (friends who don't play diplomacy.... yet). But, I've never played FTF myself - so:

What kind of phase lengths do people use? I assume that there's also a time or turn cap too (eg game ends in 1910)?

Underage Drinking
Two IU players busted for underage drinking, one I know well. I guess the shocking part of their arrests is that the police in B-town are such assholes that they go around hunting for underage drinkers on Little 500 Day.

Please tell me no one on webDip suffered until 21 before their first drink.

Tucson, Arizona cops back in the 1980s used to pull over anyone college age or younger that drove past the most popular bar. Back then they could get away with profiling.

Before the drinking age got raised to 21 and the University of Arizona cracked down on drinking, parties advertised the keg numbers. The beer distributor for some parties would sometimes leave the truck nearby to sell more to the dorm or frat in case they ran out.

Maybe it's because our beer is famously inferior, but I've never gotten the appeal...

Heineken I like...Newcastle when it's cheap at a sports bar...

Sam Adams is an absolute last I-must-drink-so-I-guess-it's-this choice...

But still, red wine, rum, cognac and cocktails are way more fun and worthwhile in my opinion.

I didn't drink before 16 which used to be the drinking age.
I had my first sip of beer at a party about 12 hours ago, although I thought it was disgusting (Grolsch) and never finished it, but since you're now not allowed to have alcohol with you below 18 in public places, I suppose I technically broke the law for about 5 minutes. I didn't buy it myself so the only issue would be holding a beer in public for 5 minutes.

On the other hand though, pretty much everyone was drunk. You had to be 18 to buy drinks and that was checked, but no one seemed to give a shit about the actual drinking, even though security was probably tight enough to effectively kick all 16/17 years old drinkers out.

While I'm still not a drinker myself (although I'm sort of open for it, but I won't drink shitty beer, and I don't plan to start with strong stuff either. I probably wouldn't drink a lot either), I like the way it is, partly because drunk girls apparently love bubbling with me. Hell, they can't even wait for their turn... :)

Then again, most people seem to get drunk at home with the strong shit and go to the party afterwards, so it shouldn't matter too much in terms of being drunk.

I should also note that there was no way to get in below 16, so they of course knew that everyone drinking was at least 16.

I'm more of a Mackesons man myself, although Guinness is rather acceptable when you add a shot of port.

My first pub pint with mates wasn't until I was 16, in a pub that turned out to be the regular spot for our school's headmaster and a few of the teaching staff. That was an interesting night...

Cider's a great summer drink, but in the cold winter months you want something a bit beefier when sat by the fireside. Variety, as ever, iis the spice of life. I have even been known, on occasion, to have a pint of Kronenbourg.

Yeah, no, I agree with Draug for a change--

1. I'm NOT interested in a girl that just wants to get blasted on cheap shit, and

2. If I choose to buy a drink with a girl, I'm getting the best wine or cognac I can...

Quality over kegs.

Besides, if she's drunk, chances are she'll be shit to talk to...and if she's shit to talk to, I don't give a shit myself...and then I'd feel badly for her getting drunk and wouldn't want to say or do much lest it result in a problem...granted I can't ever see myself doing much anyway, but still, I'd rather the shame of failure than the guilt of trying when she's at a disadvantage and inhibited, to put it one way.

And again, I'd rather talk. *shrug*

So maybe between the wine preference and that, I am a woman, maple.

But that's OK--just means if I ever meet any of you schmucks for a drink YOU'RE footing the tab (and I ain't cheap.) :p
I was 16 for my first pub pint.at a pub I still love - the green room in toronto. Got drunk for the first time at 14. Smoked first weed at 13. This is more along the lines of how normal people grow up, I think.

I know the subject isn't really this anymore, but I just wanted to react on what ssorenn said:

"Draug, your actually a retard, when your young, absolutely you want drunk sluts-----yummy"

Is it weird that I just don't want that? Of course you can have a good time with drunk girls, but I'd rather have a sober girl any day. As a rule, I don't even try to kiss drunk girls, although I won't neccesarily stop them if they want to kiss me. It's just meaningless for me if they're drunk.

As I explained above, bubbling is just having a good time for me, and kissing could even be that too (if she really wants it, and isn't just too drunk to say no. I've seen that happen a couple of times and it really bugs me), but it's all just a fun time. I think I would prefer a good talk with a sober girl (I admit I would be going for the long run, and expect to be kissing soon enough anyway, with maybe more later, but even if that doesn't happen...) rather than making out or something with a drunk girl.

I suppose I prefer romance rather than sexuality.

I'll take both any day though, but still.

I should probably note that the sober girl would have to be a sober girl that I really like (or even love... Cute, huh?). If the girl is an annoying bitch, I'd rather take her drunk if at all, because there would have to be absolutely no meaning, and if you take her to dinner or something for your good talk, you send a much stronger signal of love I'd say.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
26 Apr 14 UTC
^What he said...except for the part about the annoying bitch...

I think it was the pithy Ms. Dorothy Parker who said--

"AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT!"

:p

(Seriously, why waste your time with a bitchy girl...I mean, if it's looks...is there really not a non-bitchy girl that can meat that shallow pleasure WITHOUT making you want to drill a hole in your head while drilling elsewhere? There has to be an awesome girl out there who's just as good looking and far nicer and smarter, ergo, a better person all around.)
Pushing the topic even further off:

@steephie: same here. I loved this article that I read about this recently. A quote:

"The stereotype is largely incorrect. If you really listen to most of the guys in your life, you’ll find that the majority aren’t screwing around or looking for a new partner every weekend. The vast majority only have one partner at a time, and they’re not particularly interested in one-night stands. We all need to understand that these guys are the rule, not the exception."

Aside from pub thing, this is the same as me.

Regarding this whole drunk sluts thing, no, don't do that. Don't be a dick. Besides, girls do it better sober because they aren't all about themselves.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

@obiwanobiwan: I said if it's an annoying bitch I'd rather take her drunk if I take her at all. So that doesn't mean I want to take her, but if I had to choose how to take her...

And since I'm not interested in being a saint, I have no shame admitting that even I might just get horny :)

By the way, I experienced myself that some annoying bitches are not annoying when they're drunk/horny, so you would not be annoyed while taking her. The annoyance could come afterward though, like a hangover...

If both people know there's no real love in the game and it would just be a little adventure, and both would like that adventure, then why not...

That's if you're in the mood though, and if there's no girl that you really like around :)

Real life example: some of the bubbling yesterday was with a girl that normally doesn't really want to talk to me, which is a mutual feeling, but I wasn't complaining about her joining the fun since it was just that: having fun. No one expected anything else. Also, the girl I like the most was pretty drunk and approving (and joining. It was just a case of the more the merrier I suppose :P) so, I mean, if everybody wants me to have that fun I'll do it, because it's fun. Nothing lost. I didn't push anyone in any sense, so no one can whine at me if they have regrets either.

So, one of my courses this semester is about "contemporary issues" and one of the issues I'm supposed to debate during our final is whether Woody Allen deserved the lifetime achievement award given to him by the Golden Globes. I've been assigned to argue on the side that he should not have gotten the award. And I want to hear what the people of WebDip think. Source links in the thread.

Fixing part of the NMR and CD in beginning of games
To be clear, I am NOT a programmer, but it seems to me a simple fix at the start of new games would be an an initial ready button. This would allow the game not to start if everyone is not present. For longer duration games people would have a whole phase to figure things are starting and for live games, the duration could be 5-10 minutes that way if one or more people don't show up, they get kicked out so some else could take their place.

Thought??
