Worst Non-Sitcom TV Show You've Ever Watched? (4 Episodes Minimum)
Friends were raving about this Netflix show, "Orange is the New Black." Watched. ..It's awful. Wall to wall. The main lead (not the actress herself, she seems to be trying, at least) is like the adult equivalent of Bella Swann meets Every Yuppie Character Ever. Every character's a stereotype. Every guy is a perv, sex-crazed ass, douche, OR just has no life whatsoever. The writing is as bad as I've seen...and yet, this won awards? xD So, worst shows?

Populism and Democracy
I've heard in here that populism is the plague that affects democracy (the topic praising appeasement). I would like people to elaborate on the subject - how does populism undermine the democratic principles, and what can we learn about this in history?

Appeasement: unfairly maligned strategy?
I've been reading quite a bit about British & French foreign policy at the turn of the century, and it seems like appeasement (reduction of tensions through concessions) has gotten an unnecessarily bad reputation.

Can atheists believe in free will?
If our consciousness is simply a product of the mushy 3-dimensional circuit board we call a brain, governed entirely by the fixed and unchanging laws of physics and chemistry, is there any kind of free will? Or are all our decisions in life predetermined, like a computer program running through its code, simply responding to various inputs?

Again--This is NOT a Christian Country...
http://news.yahoo.com/republicans-obama-must-defend-christian-values-192212780--election.html Christians live here--AND Jews, AND Muslims, AND Buddhists and Hindus and Atheists (fastest growing group!) AND dozens of others (including, hey, all those Native American tribes and religions...many of which were criminalized in part until the 1970s)...WHY? Why must Obama defend the values of a specific sect, when the Constitution clearly is anti-favoritism in terms of religion?

Commenting on ongoing gunboat games
I realise of course that you are not allowed to circumvent the no talking rule, like press via email or pm or f2f talking etc. but why is discussing the board in general disallowed? I get that I should not say who I am in the game but if someone is to talk about the board unbiased and without revealing who they are would this be acceptable?

Two team members per country game?
Would anyone be interested in creating a game, that each of the 7 clasic countries were comprised of two team members consulting together. I understand that only one can actually be listed in the game itself, but maybe create a side pot for the second team members that would pay out equally at end of game

Right now David Cameron is going on about the "threat" from Jihadists leaving the UK to go fight in Iraq and Syria.

For six players, for example, one have to quit Turkey and Bulgaria. Is there any variants at this webDiplomacy that allow games of this kind? Could it be created?

Planning ahead, I'll probably be happy doing anything more useful than what most people usually do during holidays, so I figured that doing some web design for someone is a good way to help, brush up and improve my skills and perhaps even earn a couple of bucks. (Austria) would anyone be interested in an alliance? as i/ we are in the central position, we could have a successful alliance with any0one (even you England). post here if interested.

France.

I wish all the gentlemen participating in this a good game and a good result, especially the one controlling the French units of course. The French look forward to having friendly relations with all.

As to Austria proposing to ally. Although it seems a slight bit inconsistent to offer alliance to every other country, I'm nonetheless certainly interested to hear what an Austrian-French alliance would look like. Especially since frankly, I don't think France will be looking for conflict with Italy.
mendax (321 D)
27 Feb 14 UTC
(Germany) - Austria, I'd be more than willing to work with you, as our nations always do.

@France - would you be interested in a DMZ of Burgundy?

@England/Russia - I'm sure we can come to some agreement regarding Scandinavia. What are your thoughts on the frozen north.
arborinius (173 D)
27 Feb 14 UTC
(England). France, if we could agree to keep the English Channel DMZ that would be beneficial for both of us. Is this agreeable to you?
Sylvania (3927 D)
27 Feb 14 UTC
(Turkey) Good luck everyone. Especially if they happen to have units in Ankara, Constantinople or Smyrna. I think the big question for spring '01 is the Black Sea. Is either player prepared to gamble and trust the other to not go for it? If both Turkey and Russia leave it alone, then maybe some sort of awesome juggernaut might be on. I think game theory might have something to say about this...
Sylvania (3927 D)
27 Feb 14 UTC
(Turkey) @Austria - It is highly possible that, if Turkey doesn't like the look of the juggernaut (and let's face it, it works better for Russia than Turkey), he may want to team up with you. You just need to make sure Italy doesn't grab Tyrolia in this opening turn and then I'd imagine we could talk turkey. So to speak.
oscarjd74 (100 D)
27 Feb 14 UTC
(France) I endorse the proposed DMZ in the English Channel and strongly suggest that the French driver abide by it. Burgundy, I'm not so sure about. I'm not too fond of the idea of Germany jumping to 6 centers in the first year. How about a friendly bounce in Burgundy instead?

I would also like to applaud Turkey for their bold proposal of a Juggernaut so early on. At least we all know where we stand with that now.

Sylvania (3927 D)
27 Feb 14 UTC
(Turkey) @France But that's the point of this backseat driver thing, isn't it? That this isn't just another public press game. The juggernaut is obviously an option for Russia and Turkey, and I'm just mentioning it. But ultimately it will be the drivers who decide whether to go for it or not. I think the early posts on this thread suggest the backseat drivers are in danger of thinking they're the drivers, when they're not.
oscarjd74 (100 D)
27 Feb 14 UTC
(France) @Turkey Yeah, I agree, the drivers decide. And I'm not even saying I'm opposed to the Juggernaut either. They often work out just fine for France after all. It was still noteworthy IMO that you mentioned it right off the bat.
arborinius (173 D)
27 Feb 14 UTC
(England) @France I'm happy to hear that you agree to a DMZ English Channel, and I also hope my driver will abide by it. As to your concerns with Germany getting 3 SCs, there is also the possibility to use a fleet in the North Sea to bounce in Belgium.

@Mujus - threadID=1105293

@oscar ... it's an innocent question, let it be.
mendax (321 D)
27 Feb 14 UTC
(Germany) @France, I don't see how Germany will be getting to 6 - there is likely going to be a bounce in Belgium in fall.
oscarjd74 (100 D)
27 Feb 14 UTC
(France) @Germany Well, how that would usually work is Kie-Hol, Mun-Ruh, Ber-Kie in the Spring and then Ruh-Bel, Hol S Ruh-Bel, Kie-Den in the Fall, i.e. with a supported move to Belgium.

Anyway, I take it you're not interested in a bounce in Burgundy then? That's fine really, but I'm gonna leave it to my driver whether or not he wants to go to Burgundy then. I would emphasize though that if he does go to Burgundy that is not at all an indication that they want conflict with Germany. I mean, it borders two of our home centers so it'd just be a defensive move really.

@bo_sox Yeah, I realize it's an innocent question. One that could easily have been asked via PM or in a separate thread.
(Italy) Hello everybody, I wish you all good luck. I will begin by emphasizing that I am speaking objectively for myself, not my driver, though obviously my messages will contain a certain bias.
On Austria- Well, Austria and Italy typically ally early in the game, this is for good reason. If one attacks the other he is doomed to be killed by a Juggernaut. As such a DMZ in the Ven Trieste area may be achievable. Though it is completely up to the drivers as to what to do.
On England- England and Italy do not typically work together due to the distance between, but I would like to extend a gracious hand to you if you (or anyone) ask for help, assuming the Channel DMZ is violated.
On France- It is very difficult for one of our countries to gear up for war without the other taking notice, as they any build and move towards the other can be stopped with a build. We also have bigger concerns in our spheres of influence for the early game. Early peace is usually the way to go.
On Germany- Much like England, but with the added possibility of an attack on Austria, though such would be risky.
On Russia- Well, if a Lepanto occurs, Russia is key. He can stalemate it or end Turkey. And the mid-game could go well for Russia and Italy, depending on how well early alliances go.
On Turkey- The Wicked Witch of the east. A good man to work with if you aggress Austria, or a good man to leave alone if he attacks Russia.

While I have made a few limited cases of why/how alliances with Italy can work, I will admit that there are more variations. I would also like to state that in any conflict, Italy can be a key player, be it the west or east, they can turn a stalemate into a victory if you treat them well, and vice versa if treated poorly. If you are interested in teaming with Italy please respond, you are our only hope.

(France) @Italy Nice post but a tad noncommittal. I agree that French-Italian hostilities tend to lead to nothing though. So, can we agree on a DMZ in Piedmont?
thibaud1 (176 D)
27 Feb 14 UTC
Grabbing me a star.
mendax (321 D)
28 Feb 14 UTC
(Germany) @France - I believe that Kie -> Den in Spring in '01, leaving only one unit on Belgium (and hence the bounce there).
ILN (100 D)

ILN (100 D)

@All: So anyways, Hello all!

@Turkey: Seems to me the world if quite scared of a juggernaut. How about we start with a simple DMZ of the black sea and then see if we can carry out a juggernaut :D
@England, I don't think our countries should be hostile to each other, perhaps it would be much much better if you could instead focus on somewhere closer...
oscarjd74 (100 D)
28 Feb 14 UTC
(France) Vodka? That's barbaric dude. I'll have the French ambassador in St. Petersburg send you some fine Bordeaux wine.

Perhaps England - if he chooses wisely - can support finland/gulf of bothnia to sweden.
mendax (321 D)
